Tommys record is pretty good as a starter if i remember right?? and some of those were prior to the beast of a defense we have now (not to mention that awful secondary especially against Michigan 2011). He doesnt have Eifert or Floyd, but he does have an Oline that is better. Plus more experience under his belt. I trust the staff to play our best option, and if it's Tommy i wont be upset. I dont expect a miracle from him but i expect a pretty good season, i trust Tommy playing quarterback and am looking forward to this season

ND should immediately petition the NCAA to allow student on suspension to play.........

(Times like these all I can do is be a total goofball or cry... I choose the first option apparently)

Everett Golson banned from Notre Dame Fighting Irish for 'poor academic judgment' - ESPN

Everett Golson has been suspended from Notre Dame due to "poor academic judgment," the former starting quarterback said in a statement given to ESPN's Tom Rinaldi.

"I have been informed by the University of Notre Dame that due to my poor academic judgment that I have been suspended from the University for the 2013 Fall Term," Golson said. "I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community."

Golson started 11 games for the Fighting Irish last season as a redshirt freshman, leading the team to the Discover BCS National Championship, where it lost to Alabama to finish a 12-1 season.

He completed 187-of-318 passes for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. Golson also rushed for 298 yards and six scores.

"My parents and the community I grew up in have instilled values in me that have and will continue to allow me to be successful in the future," he said. "There have been many lessons learned as I worked to become the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and each was a result of Coach Kelly's belief in me as an athlete and a person.

"At this point, I understand how my integrity could be in question but I want to reassure my supporters that through this experience I will return a better student athlete as well as a better individual.

"Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014."

Golson's departure leaves a major question mark at a position where coach Brian Kelly was expecting to see big improvement in an offense that struggled for much of last season, with the Irish finishing 54th in the nation in total offense, including 71st in passing offense.

Former Oklahoma State quarterback Wes Lunt has drawn interest from Notre Dame within the past month and now may again be an option, a source told ESPN's Joe Schad. Lunt will visit Louisville on Tuesday, a source said.

Lunt would not be eligible this season. He is also considering Illinois.

Former Fighting Irish quarterback Gunner Kiel transferred to Cincinnati last month. He said Sunday he is committed to coach Tommy Tuberville and the Bearcats in response to speculation he could try to return to Notre Dame.

Senior Tommy Rees is the most experienced quarterback enrolled, with 18 career starts. Fourth-year junior Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire, a spring enrollee, are also on the depth chart.

Zaire was the sixth-ranked QB prospect in the Class of 2013, according to the ESPN 300.

There could be precedent for a chance to reapply to Notre Dame, as former players Darrin Walls and Gary Gray missed a semester because of reported academic issues and returned.

Shame he couldn't hack it. Really disappointed. But it saying he plans to return and support the team sounds like the Golson I know.

Maybe he was pointing to a better training system in place....

That's true. The program has come along way, but there are also huge experience limitations to this team. We don't have a dominant receiver like Floyd or Tate or Rudolph or Eifert, we don't have running backs who have played any significant time. The only hope for this offense for me is the offensive line. Players like Martin and Watt can make inexperienced players get acclimated quicker.

So looks like he will be back in 14. Damn he really let this team down. Tommy and Hendrix along with all the seniors need to pull this thing together, unite and win the whole funking thing.

Agreed. It is a lot easier to run the ball with inexperienced running backs if there is a huge gaping hole in front of them. It is also easier for a QB to go through their progressions when they don't have to worry about being pressured. Also if we have DD and TJ returning at WR I feel pretty good about that combo.

Glad that he issued a statement taking responsibility. And glad he plans to accept the punishment and return in 2014. I'll be pulling for him.

I'm going to look at this as if Golson were hurt for the season in fall ball and now Hendrix/Rees/Zaire have to fill in. Upside is we now have all of fall ball for the other quarterbacks to prepare themselves. Unfortunately the goal for this team, at best, is to reach a BCS bowl. 10-2 would definitely be overachieving.

Only being suspended for a semester is better than kicked out of the school. I can't see the harm in playing Zaire this year and then redshirting him next year when Golson is eligible to play.

Damn this sucks though. Golson may be here in 2014 but Nix and Tuitt likely won't be.

Eh only play Zaire if necessary. Fairly good chance he would be the #2 guy next year so would be difficult to redshirt him then. If Golson returns and plays most of the snaps the next two years, Zaire gets one year as the guy.

If we made a January bowl would he be eligible? Not that I think he should play at that point but it would be interesting.

This has always been the plan though.

No the plan was for Golson, Nix, Tuitt, Daniels, Martin, and our stable of running backs to all play together for a run at a national championship.

Nowadays most elite programs get 1-2 real shots at making a NC run every 6 years or so. This upcoming year had a group of untested, but talented WR's and replacing Grace with Te'o as its only serious question marks. This was a NC or bust type year, that window is gone now.

I wish we could run a "low-light" of Golson to put people at ease.

Seriously...He won the game against Pitt with his scrambling but that's about it...

Good oi see EG respond to this. Have to support the kid. He made a mistake, will suffer the consequences, and move on. He will be a better man because of it.

And no way MZ plays this year. Tommy and Andrew will hold down the job for a year. MZ, no matter how dynamic, should not blow a RS year.

Lastly, our offense will probably be pretty boring now. Run, run, and run some more.

Ziare could play this year and have redshirt next year. Just because he plays doesn't mean his redshirt year is "burnt"

AND, we got two classes of the best hogs anyone's ever seen. I almost fret losing Vanderdoes as much as Golson....Almost.
