Think Malik might see some playing time this year rather than us redshiring him because of this now? I'm not saying start him but maybe give him some snaps especially since Hendrix hasn't gotten much playing time and Tommy I love the kid but...yeah he may need some help.

1. Neal did not leave bc he got caught smoking weed.

2. Notre Dame is going to be there through the good and bad. One kid doesnt make Notre Dame.

3. Notre Dame represents opportunity to excel at the highest level of academics and sports. Time for someone to rise to the occasion.

4. In talking to a few of the fellas...they arent worried about it. They are a TEAM, and they prepare as a team. They arent goin to give less of an effort and I expect to see one of the nastiest attitude teams come fall.

5. People blaming Kelly....get a life. Kelly can only do so much. Its a personal decision to do drugs, cheat, be on time, be a man of your word. Kelly can instill his values on them, but they got to live it.

6. We all love Notre Dame, and come Aug 31, we all are going to be watching. So stop worrying. Kelly has the best staff in the country and they arent about to give up, its only going to bring out the best in everyone.

All good to hear. And all true (well I can't personally vouch for 1 and 4, but I believe you). Still, I'd much rather Everett Golson not have done whatever he did. Hoping he learns from it and comes back smarter.

It's difficult to have a sunny feeling about things in the moments when crap like this happens, so I won't be "sunny". But I also won't be tragically defeatist. About two months ago I posted a little "exercise" in the possible on another thread. It was about our coming defense and what it might reduce our opponents to --- based on very reasonable past year's data. With apologies for the repeat, here that is:

" Gentlemen, this is not a prediction but some reflection on who we were last year and what that might possibly mean for 2013.

It's first about defense. Last year in the regular season our defense continually held everybody out of the endzone [other than the screwed up Pitt game] at a jaw-dropping rate of about 35% of those teams normal scoring. This number was remarkably consistent across the board. And we were even better than that. We were the best against the best: serving up the lowest scoring totals for Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, Stanford, and Michigan State that those teams had all season.

Well.... let's imagine that we're just as good for 2013. In fact, I believe that we are better. This "better" might not show dramatically, because last year's numbers were so low, but the "better" might make everything seem even more in control, and allow the offense better field position.

But let's dream up some numbers. I'm going to insert our last year's numbers against our opponents, then cheat on the Pitt number [to make myself feel good and list something that I believe anyway], and then put our 35% strangler number on the three new teams. How much would we be scored on?

1). Temple 9pts.
2). Michigan 6pts.
3). Purdue 17pts. {this was probably also a little anomalous}
4). MSU 3pts.
5). Oklahoma 13pts.
6). Arizona State 14pts.
7). USC 13pts.
8). Air Force 10pts.
9). Navy 10pts.
10). Pitt {35% of their average score} 10pts.
11). BYU 14pts.
12). Stanford 13pts.

So, how's the ol' offense going to be?? Think we can score more than two touchdowns per game?? That just might be all we need."

Rees tended to fixate on Eifert/Floyd. He would stare at them and only throw to them. Maybe w/out a safety blanket he will be more difficult to read and less apt to throw picks

Or he may still throw into triple coverage, minus the receiver that can catch the ball anyway. Seriously 2011 was the Mike Floyd show.

8-4 at best is grossly pessimistic. Simple as that. This team can still easily make a BCS bowl game.

It's reasonable. I think Stanford and Oklahoma beat us one team we think is an easy win might be a better football team than we give them credit for and I think we might let a rivalry game slip away from us. My first comment about I just hope we make a bowl was a spit of the moment posses off comment but I think 8-4 is pretty reasonable right now given all we have lost and our new question marks we have. Hopefully I'm surprised who knows maybe Hendrix has it in him. Maybe tommy can leave a huge mark his senior year. Maybe Malik is a freshman prodigy like manzel but I'm not gonna get my hopes that high on them and when some team has an answer for them get even more pissed off.

Here is hoping the defense is as good in the scoring department as last year,... It is difficult to do anything at that level two years running.... My guess is we'd better be ready for at least OU and Michigan to score more points this time around.

Let's not forget, the offense didn't get ND to the championship game last year. The defense in my opinion will be just as strong, if not stronger. Lets just get a QB in there to manage things and hope the running game is solid. I wouldn't mind seeing Zaire in there to get experience and have Rees the "reliever" if needed again. I just personally don't see Hendrix being the answer.

I hope, given personnel, ND leads the nation in rushing yards

I've been thinking 10-2. Just too hard to replicate what happened last year, but that at least gets us to a BCS bowl. This has me thinking more like 8-4. Rees is smart and tough but we almost lost to BYU when they knew he'd be our QB. Zaire might be the answer but not by the Michigan game.

That said, in the post-Holtz era, Notre Dame football has generally been at its best when expectations were low. So now we've got that going for us.

Wow, he seemed to be a great student/athlete. Accomplished musician, well spoken, and smart. A typical ND student athlete. Everything I have been reading seems to say "if he re-enrolls". I am gonna wait and see if he certainly is gone. Also wait until more light is shed on the situation. I have seen reasons ranging from drug use on campus to major or minor cheating infractions. In either words, nobody knows **** yet

Almost lost to Purdue, Pitt, struggled at BC, with Golson.

Yep, I think the hope was Golson would show great growth this year... I know for me, I wonder how much better Rees can get... Hopefully he'll grow enough so that he at least protects the ball better... Ill take that.

I shouldn't even have bothered bolding! Thanks TP. Everybody else, get a life. Or at least a drink. This is a kids game. Sandlot; Peewee; JR high; high school; college; or NFL, it is still a kids game. It isn't the life and death that is being lived out on our cities streets.

And about those that want ND to cave on their values. That is the same sociopathological approach we see that has infected business world and politics today. You drop your standards and you have nothing.

At least we know we should have a solid O-line from here on out. Especially with these recruiting classes, it shouldnt take a superstar to run behind them haha. Trying to stay positive

I'm going to assume Tommy is the starter. Yea, there is some history to look at but like every other player, he has the right to get better.

Strengths: experience, knows the offense, mature, adequate arm.

Weaknesses: not very athletic, adequate arm, turnovers

So how do you use him best? Precision. Let him get the ball out of his hand quickly, to a spot. These young gun receivers had better learn how to run precision routes. Anybody think Tommy isn't going to pound those guys this summer? The offense has to be more precise. The o-line has to give him the time the play calls for. The running game, I want to see the o-line down field, being passed by the backs.

In the Spring Game (yea, I know) I thought Tommy showed a higher level of skill than before. He's stronger, and I thought he was putting the ball where it was suppose to be.

The offense will be different. Maybe it will lack the Big Play potential as with Golson, but it can still be very potent. Other players have to step up. I believe the bigger challenge is for the rest of the offense to step up to the level Tommy can perform.

Its nice to see people trying to look at the bright side but personally i don't see it.

The offense was going to be problematic with golson, needing him to make that soph jump we all anticipated. But with Tommy, teams will put eight in the box , they will STOP the run and we do not have theo or cierre anymore, we have inexpereinced RBs that will be running into eight man fronts all day long.

Tommy will be forced to throw to win in nearly every game, and without floyd or eifert tommy is simply NOT the point guard golson was, he won't be hitting the open man or hitting eight recievers a game.

We will play tough defense no doubt--but we will lose alot of games---expect turnovers and three and outs to come in bunches and never at a good time.

We played terrific defense against FSU in 2011 but we had no offense under tommy and that was WITH EIFERT FLOYD CIERRE & THEO___

Yes not many teams will be as good as FSU on defense but we will have inexperience all over the offense and tommy is tommy---

8-5 is the only reasonable thinking --long season ahead.

Interesting tidbit from this bit of random speculation on 247
Everett Golson is out at Notre Dame, what is the next move?

"Sources close to Golson, who is out of the country on vacation right now..."

Wonder if he took Kelly's advice to go "out of the country on vacation" when you're all over SportsCenter.

Seriously, though, that does make me wonder how long ago this happened.
Exams have been over, what, a couple of weeks? Players seemed genuinely surprised on Twitter last night, but I'd think it's the kind of news that spreads quick on a football team, no? I'd guess there could have been some time to adjudicate it, but is Golson not present for hearings?
Just odd.

We are lucky to have Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix. Tommy has physical limitations to be sure, but he really knows the offense and has plenty of big game experience. Hendrix also has 3 years in the system and physical qualities Tommy lacks. Malik is the wild card in my opinion. He fits the system and has the advantage of enrolling early. Who knows?

I will support whomever puts the jersey on and gets the call on Saturdays. If it helps anybody, think about Joe Montana and how unlikely it was that he would rise to the top and lead the Irish to an NC.

Hendrix vs. Stanford in 2011. Kelly went out of his way the 2nd half of that season to get Hendrix into games. Will be interesting to see if Hendrix proves himself this summer now that he's getting #2 reps again.

You dont think that overall ND is a better team as a whole now compared to the FSU game? These kids work their asses off day in and out. Its not fair to them to compare them to a team that lost to FSU.

I bet the 2011 team worked their asses off. So did the 2007 team. I don't get this point. It's a fair comparison in terms of experience & talent.
