I don't know if you guys have watched the Dave Grohl Sound City movie, but its fantastic. 2 of my favorite records of all time were cut there, Nevermind & Rage Against the Machine.

So many bands went through that studio, incredible.

As far as modern music I am rolling with Wilco (Heavy Metal Drummer and Pot Kettle Black) and Iron and Wine right now. (Just got into Jezebel- Iron and Wine, not sure I missed that before). I've also got into Peter Bjorn and John (Amsterdam, Young Folks, Second Chance, Nothing to Worry About) and Gregory Alan Isakov who I really like, not sure if other people really like him though. I really like Evelyn (below), but also Big Black Car and The Stable Song:

EDIT: AHHH, I just figured out I went through a whole Sigur Ros/ Jonsi phase without posting (I think) check out Sigur Ros (at least Hoppipolla), and if it isn't up beat enough (not including Hoppipolla) check out Jonsi, their lead guy). Its basically the soundtrack for We Built a Zoo, never heard of the movie, but the soundtrack is awesome. Note: Sigur Ros has alot of songs in Icelandic so you won't really understand what they are saying but yeah its awesome.

I enjoy it but my ears aren't trained enough to make me think I know what I am talking about, so I refrain from mentioning them. I listen to classical and baroque when I am trying to be productive.

Amy Winehouse was a great singer for many reasons, but one reason was because each song she sang, she 'felt' and 'relived' that moment in time and the emotion of the pain comes out in her voice/performance. Its also the reason why you can listen to different live versions of the same song and each is very different, and each very powerful.

Imagine reliving (deeply feeling) those bad moments every time you performed those songs (Which was 100's of times a year). You can almost understand why she was messed up on alcohol/drugs, it was defintely a coping method.

The first time i heard Amy Winehouse (did not see, just heard) I thought there was a mature black woman singing, I was truly blown away when I found out she was a 20 year old white girl from England.

another good tune; listen to her 'rambling' at the beginning of the song, she comes out and says that singing all the songs back to back is depressing (because she 'relives' and 'feels' each song, each time she sings them)

I love Amy Winehouse- she has a unique sound to her. Kind of like Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan- everyone knows who it is after the first verse. I'm a big fan or Me and Mr. Jones and Valerie.
