2014 QB Camping With High Hopes
Morgan Mahalak has visited Notre Dame a couple of times in the past.

The 2014 quarterback prospect from Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield, Calif., will be getting back to South Bend this summer, but this time will be a bit different.

This will be my third time out there,” he said. “I saw the Nevada game a couple years ago and then a Purdue game a while back when Brady (Quinn) was there. It’s great.

“My dad’s side of the family all went there; my dad, his dad and his dad’s uncle. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve always been wearing Notre Dame gear and watching the games every Saturday.”

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder will be returning to Notre Dame for camp next month with the hopes of cementing himself on Notre Dame’s recruiting radar.

“Obviously as a little kid, I’ve been dreaming of playing football there,” he said. “It’s just a great opportunity for me. I’m in a position to get myself there, so that’s exciting. It’s what I want to do more than anything.”

Mahalak hasn’t heard much from the Irish to this point.

“I’ve expressed interest, but we haven’t had a direct call yet,” he said. “We’re waiting on that.”

Mahalak likes what Notre Dame stands for.

“Just the tradition,” he said. “If you’re walking out with a degree from Notre Dame, you can get a job pretty much anywhere and I think people know that.

“They’re taking athletes who are smart. They’re not just taking kids who only care about football. They’re taking kids who really care about the University and who want to do something with their lives besides football.”

The rising junior is still searching for his first offer, but has already received serious interest from Colorado and has also heard from schools like Oklahoma, Oregon, Wisconsin, Boston College, UCLA and Oregon State among others. It’s still early, but Mahalak is already enjoying the process.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “I’m getting settled in now. At first, I was like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?’ But day by day, it just gets more and more normal. It’s pretty exciting, it’s been fun, but at the same time, my coach has done a good job of keeping me grounded. My job is to go to school, study hard, lift weights and play football and all of the other recruiting stuff will come along.”

The 2014 quarterback will be hitting the camp circuit this summer.

“I’m going to be at Oregon, Colorado, Notre Dame and then I think I’m going head out to Miami the day after I get out of school,” he said.

Mahalak, who has been timed at 4.68 in the 40-yard dash, believes his versatility is one of his biggest strengths as a quarterback.

“I’m pretty diverse,” he said. “I can run the ball and pass it. We run a spread. We used to run a wing-t, but we’ve totally diversified our offense. It’s a lot of spread, but we also do the read option and I run that really well.

“Our offense is similar to what Notre Dame runs and I feel like I’m a good leader too. That’s why I love quarterback so much because I get to lead the team.”

Mahalak is hopeful he could get his first offer soon, but is looking for one in particular.

“I think I’m close to some schools offering, but I’ve said from day one, if Notre Dame were ever to offer, my recruiting process would end there,” he said.

“It’s the one school that I want to go to.”

Wonder how good this guy will be... this guy seems like a lock, but after what Calicoach stated, he may not be worth it. Well see how the recruiting websites rate him.

Got invited to camp at ND. Let's see how this plays out.

2014 QB Morgan Mahalak eyes Irish

“[if offered] I’d commit right away,” he said. “There are some schools that would mean something to me, and there already are, but if Notre Dame were to offer me, my process would end right there.”

Mahalek has a 4 star QB in front of him in Jared Goff who is committed to Cal for 2013. I think his tape is JV. He may want to considering transferring to gain exposure.

That article from BGI has Goff as a 3 star. IT says he's more of the pocket passer and Mahalak is more mobile. From what it says, I like the kids attitude about sharing reps and using Goff's recruitment to be able to get himelf exposure. If the kids performs well at the Elite 11 and at camp this summer, I wouldn't hate to offer him.

Transferring wouldn't be too bad either, but from what the coach who posted previously in this thread said, the area he plays seems to be a bunch of small towns, so I don't know how easy that would be for him as opposed to say Neal, with a new school just across town. Just my 2 pennies.

Oregon offered today. He actually picked up several offers over the last couple of weeks without even starting on varsity yet. He had two dream schools at the start with ND and Oregon, so I think this one is all but over.

Mahalak is trying to get the other Oregon commits to call themselves #AutzenArmy14. He also tweeted at Trey Quinn right after Elijah Hood did. How original....

Will suck when this kid turns out to be a baller somehow. I can't remember reading quotes that strong from a recruit. Why are there scholarship limits...

I talked to his dad quite frequently through the whole process. Denbrock told him early on that we weren't going to take a QB in this class. Then when Gunner transferred the staff just didn't get back in touch. They knew Oregon was going to offer about a month in advance and that Morgan was going to commit unless he heard from ND. They reached out to Denbrock one last time but got no response back.

I think if we weren't in such good shape with Beneventi and Campbell for 2015 that we could have taken two QBs in this class and Morgan would have been a perfect fit for that second spot. Regardless I hope he kills it at Oregon.

Who cares. Oregon is gonna suck now that Kelly left and due to the fact that they have no defense to speak of whatsoever. Anyhow, beer is awesome!

#Deadducks14 I Like I like

This kid bleeds ND. He begged for an ND offer. Personally I'll leave the hate or any bagging on his class really out of his thread cause he's a good kid that just didn't get the offer he desperately wanted.

I disagree (not about the beer). Oregon will be just fine next year and for several years. They are more talented now than they've ever been (star ratings wise). They are THE 'it' school right now, and with Nike's huge financial backing (apparently they're adding some innovative stuff to their already sick locker rooms), that won't stop any time soon. Add to that a QB that is totally legit and speed everywhere, and you have a winning program. And their defense always does just enough to win games and take them to double digit wins. So they'll be fine IMO...

Man, I wish we could have found a spot for him. I hate to turn away kids who love ND that much. Best of luck to him at Oregon.

It school? Meh. They haven't had a top 10 class in the last 5 years (that's as far as I went back), and probably averaged around 15-16th during that period. They've gotten some good athletes, but so have a lot of the other schools ahead of them. Quality depth, especially on the defensive side of the ball will be a huge issue for them, IMO.

I'm in the bus that they will drop off without Kelly as well.

And let's not forget that the program is to appears in front of an NCAA infractions committee later this year. Granted it could take decades for the NCAA to rule on that, but it does have the potential to be somewhat crippling, especially in the PAC-whateverthehellitisthesedays where teams are scratching and clawing to stay afloat.

I think Oregon has about 2 decent years left, then the effects of Chip Kelly leaving will hit them. That and the fact the NCAA should drop a hammer on them.

That's fine.

For me, they'll still be fine. They've been winning for several yrs with recruiting classes in the 50's, and like I said, they have more talent now than ever, with a returning quarterback that is in the Heisman discussion already. They don't need top classes because they recruit to their system, and they do it perhaps as good as anyone in the country in that sense.

People have been saying the same things about Stanford for years, and I've been saying the same argument for them as well. They thought it was Gerhart, then Harbaugh, then Luck, and finally people just realize they are good.

Oregon was trending up before Chip Kelly; look at their win totals. 9, 10, 10, 12, 12, 12. They're not just to fall off one year later cause their coach left. Not with the firepower still on the roster.

Now, if sanctions hit, all bets are off. And I'm not saying they won't take a step back in a couple of yrs, nor am I picking them to win a NC this year. I'm just saying, they'll be much better than some people here are giving them credit for. Dirty or not, they have a system in place and they know what they're doing.

Yeah...maybe they'll "just do it!" ? Anyhow, after rewatching a couple Stanford games where their d ran roughshod over everyone Im going with them as PAC 12 champs. I was also thinking that if Diaco ever left, ND should throw a boat load of money Stanford's defensive coordinator.

Stanford was the product of a great coach in Harbaugh, and I think the jury is still out on how successful they will be post-Harbaugh. Their class was below average last year - small or not, it lacked top end talent.

Oregon will fall in the same position once the Kelly recruits have moved on, but I'm sure they'll carry a couple years of momentum post-Kelly, similar to Stanford.
