i love your confidence, but as I told my buddy we were supposedly the landing spot for bunting too and that didn't end the way we hoped it would, let's hope this one is a different story.

what does everyone think?

personally I think the 3 guys on the OL that we are supposed to be in really good shape for (Bars, Nelson, and Smith) are all takes no matter what the numbers game is position wise. Gotta keep building on the OL just like Bama has done the past 5 or 6 years.

Bunting is a completely different animal. None of us knows WTH happened that day with all the TEs, who was on the top of what board, etc.

I do agree with your caution though and I think KC is the best parallel.

So now that Nelson is on board would we take Bars now or holdout to see what Smith does first?

We would take Bars ... And still try to get Smith. We need two true tackles. Byrne, Mustipher and Smith all project as interior guys.

But if we got Bars, we'd stop recruiting OL other than Smith or guys of his caliber (if there are any such guys this cycle; I am aware of none who might consider us).

OK thanks guys. Man, really incredible to put together the o-line class we had last year and then follow it up like this!

does the staff project Nelson as inside or the recruiting services?? personally i think he's versatile/talented enough to be put on the edge.

He could do both, but was being recruited at tackle.

About 2 weeks ago, TJ on II said Nelson is a "Zach Martin" type OL player. He can play inside or outside. IM8 is correct though. He's being recruited as an OT.

Update to this ... Steve thinks we would also take Damien Mama as a potential 5th OL (or maybe even 6th, with Braden Smith) this cycle.

It's so interesting to me that the staff seems to be focused on interior OL rather than tackles this cycle. That the staff would take two tackles and three or even four interior OL in the 2014 class suggests to me that reports that McGovern and Bivin are earmarked for interior OL spots are exaggerated ... my guess is that, while the staff feels that McGovern and Bivin CAN play inside if necessary, they'd prefer to put those guys at tackle. Just my own personal inference though; could be mistaken.

I also think that the staff likes the flexibility that some guys bring to the Oline. The philosophy seems to be get the 5 best lineman on the field and if they need a little teaching at a certain position Hiestand will get that done. I am starting to think that Hiestand was not just a good hire but a phenomenal one.

Nobody will argue with this post. Unless they are from Tennessee. Or ND Nation.

I'm just some dude on the internet but I could definitely see Mama being very productive on defense.

Are you thinking of McGlinchey? He's the giant. I've heard McGovern is about 6'5.

Oh maybe. I thought McGovern was listed from 6'6 to 6'8.

Edit: just looked at both IE profiles. McGlinchey is listed at 6'9. You were correct.
