could have all been avoided, but oh well

It still can be with the contract extension. He comes out and says he has no interest at all in hopping to the NFL and will be at ND as long as they will allow him to be the head coach. Just echo what we heard in January that he is a college coach and while it was intriguing he just does not feel the desire to make that change. He gets paid enough, the prestige is enough, and nothing could take him away from the best program in sports. I think that would be adequate.

I disagree. It was an itch that BK wanted to itch and I don't blame him.

Before he made his decision, I said that if he's coming back, it's because he wants to A) Put the NFL itch to rest, at least for now, and B) he'd only come back if he knew he could get to a level to beat the Alabama team we lost to. I think it's great that he decided to check out the NFL and decided he wanted to stay at ND and that he decided he can get us over the hump.

The timing and miscommunication sucked during that time sucked because it could have led to us losing Alex Anzalone, but he might have been gone anyways. I think when Braden gets more time to talk to BK he will be more comfortable with the fact that BK is staying for a while. I could be wrong, but the Eagles were a great opportunity in a region BK is familiar with. If he closed the door on that, I expect him to be here for a while.

Anzalone was always gone. In his mind BK's decision to take a sniff at the NFL was just a convenient excuse for AA to save face rather than look like a fool. I think BK will be able to eliminate any concerns of his commitment to the Irish.

you don't think that smith's worries of whether BK will go to the pro's or not could have been avoided if he did not express interest in the league? not blaming him for doing it, but you didn't understand the statement i was making here.

Yeah, but it was a necessary evil for BK to entertain his NFL aspirations. Now, since he's seriously considered it, he can be more honest with kids (Braden) about his future if Braden brings up this concern to BK, which I'm sure he will.

Also, frankly, these kids need to learn right quick that four years is an eternity in big-time college coaching, and while you don't want your staff to jump, say, the day after Signing Day, you can't really expect them to stay there your whole career. Many many don't.

FWIW, I'd say the odds are higher that Kelly is still coaching Notre Dame in Braden Smith's senior year than they are that Kevin Sumlin is still coaching A&M, recent extension or no.

But they should get Kelly's extension squared away. Weird that it's gone this long.

per Scout, ND and TCU lead.
kid is beast.

Nice. Haven't been following to closely recently, but when did TCU get into this? Or have I been asleep and that is expected. Either way feel good we can recruit well versus TCU.

You probably are going to have to private message him and hope he has email alerts. It looks like the last time he had any activity on IE was back in early March.

Come on in, the water's warm. Call coach Hiestand and make this an EPIC class of future Sunday ballers, and we can shut this position group down.

Johnson County: Kansas high school boys state track recap

When Olathe South High School junior Braden Smith strolled through the infield toward the medal stand at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium last Friday after winning the Kansas Class 6A boys shot put and again on Saturday after winning the discus, jaws involuntarily dropped.

Smith is 6 feet, 6 inches and 290 pounds — powerfully built and supremely athletic, especially for his size. He is one of the most sought-after offensive tackle recruits in the nation.

During the Kansas state track and field championships, though, Smith was just a little brother gunning for family bragging rights.

Smith’s older sister, Megan, a sophomore at Texas Christian University, won the girls shot put titles her last two years in high school and also won the discus throw as a senior.

Braden wanted to do even better.

He started with a strong showing on the first day last Friday, winning the shot put with a mark of 57 feet, 3 1/2 inches — more than four feet longer than the put of runner-up Max Bullard, a Shawnee Mission West senior.

A day later, Braden finished off the double-gold performance by crushing the field in the discus. He launched all three throws in finals of more than 180 feet, including the winning mark of 188-0 that beat runner-up Kevin Tenny, a Blue Valley North senior, by 13 feet, 2 inches.

“It feels pretty good to win both events,” Smith said. “Now, if I do it again at state next year, I could have more golds than my sister. That’s the goal now — to top my sister.”

Wow, 188' in the disc as a junior is beast. He's going to throw over 200' next year.
