I don't know if you guys have watched the Dave Grohl Sound City movie, but its fantastic. 2 of my favorite records of all time were cut there, Nevermind & Rage Against the Machine.

So many bands went through that studio, incredible.

Started with some Neil Diamond

Sweet Caroline (For Boston)
Coming to America
Forever in Blue Jeans
September Morn
Hallelujah

Than I saw Bon Jovi's version of Hallelujah so that is what I am listening to now.

The new volbeat "outlaw gentlemen and shady ladies" is really good. The last release from KISS "Monster" is good as well, very loud!

I love VU. That song was done in one take. If I could've been in one band ever it would undoubtedly be the Velvet Underground. Here's a band that reminds me a of a modern day version of them.

This Them?

[Sorry. I also love VU (and Van Morrison) and applaud your taste. Word play is my weakness ...]

Ive been listening to this alot lately:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ugx0zC3Otwk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Also this is bloody brilliant. I heard this 9 months ago, and didn't hear it until earlier this week. I knew what it was in about 5 notes. So distinctive. So awesome.

This live session gets better and better as it goes on. These guys create such an Indie sound. His voice is horrible, yet oddly works really well within the music.

Do Beethoven or Mozart (or Grieg or Tchaikovsky, etc.) count for anything in this thread???

I'm a Bach man myself:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZS-HWIFyLsE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

or his Cello Suite... thats ridiculous too.

Also I really like Chopin Nocture No. 2 in E Flat Major

As far as opera goes:

Maria Callas is awesome

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lspRhX5Vhhg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As far as modern music I am rolling with Wilco (Heavy Metal Drummer and Pot Kettle Black) and Iron and Wine right now. (Just got into Jezebel- Iron and Wine, not sure I missed that before). I've also got into Peter Bjorn and John (Amsterdam, Young Folks, Second Chance, Nothing to Worry About) and Gregory Alan Isakov who I really like, not sure if other people really like him though. I really like Evelyn (below), but also Big Black Car and The Stable Song:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/TZynIzXTvk4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

EDIT: AHHH, I just figured out I went through a whole Sigur Ros/ Jonsi phase without posting (I think) check out Sigur Ros (at least Hoppipolla), and if it isn't up beat enough (not including Hoppipolla) check out Jonsi, their lead guy). Its basically the soundtrack for We Built a Zoo, never heard of the movie, but the soundtrack is awesome. Note: Sigur Ros has alot of songs in Icelandic so you won't really understand what they are saying but yeah its awesome.

I enjoy it but my ears aren't trained enough to make me think I know what I am talking about, so I refrain from mentioning them. I listen to classical and baroque when I am trying to be productive.

no audio tricks or enhancements, just a voice and a guitar...pure talent.

Amy Winehouse was a great singer for many reasons, but one reason was because each song she sang, she 'felt' and 'relived' that moment in time and the emotion of the pain comes out in her voice/performance. Its also the reason why you can listen to different live versions of the same song and each is very different, and each very powerful.

Imagine reliving (deeply feeling) those bad moments every time you performed those songs (Which was 100's of times a year). You can almost understand why she was messed up on alcohol/drugs, it was defintely a coping method.

The first time i heard Amy Winehouse (did not see, just heard) I thought there was a mature black woman singing, I was truly blown away when I found out she was a 20 year old white girl from England.

another good tune; listen to her 'rambling' at the beginning of the song, she comes out and says that singing all the songs back to back is depressing (because she 'relives' and 'feels' each song, each time she sings them)

I love Amy Winehouse- she has a unique sound to her. Kind of like Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan- everyone knows who it is after the first verse. I'm a big fan or Me and Mr. Jones and Valerie.

The Smashing Pumpkins latest album 'Oceania'.

Great album from beginning to end. Corgan is so talented he can change band members and still manage to put out really good music.

I have been listening to a lot of Tupac for the past month. Which is funny considering my favorite rapper will always be Biggie.

I see this thread come up and normally pass over it but boy am I glad i didn't, runtheball's playlist mentioned on the front page, salute to you sir.

AT THE MOMENT...
Justin Vernon (Bon iver) does no wrong
City and colour
donovan woods (the widowmaker album)
Ben gibbard
Manchester orchestra
Joe purdy

I would embed some songs by these guys but I'm on my phone, should be easy to find on YouTube for most of em,

Also, I myself personally am a complete SUCKER for a good cover, but didn't wanna derail the thread of its original artists theme..
