This probably deserves its own thread but it really irks me that this cycle has lost so much momentum. Recruits should be lining up at our doorstep after a 12-1 season. We proved we can be an elite football school while being the best at just about everything except weather. Idk if anyone is to blame but something doesn't sit right with me.

And by losing momentum I mean it seems that kids are real high on ND and then after their visit they aren't blown away or seem to have a new leader. I know things will turn out okay but it's weird.

"With Miami and Notre Dame, you're talking about two world class institutions. They're razor thin in regards to the differences if you break it down from an education standpoint, from a coaching standpoint. Notre Dame is obviously coming off a great year, going 12-0 and playing for the national title. That's impressive. The biggest difference, and what we told Notre Dame, is location." - Randy McDermott

Ugh. I hate losing top recruits due to misinformed parents. There's not a single academic ranking (objective or otherwise) in which Miami is even close to ND.

USN&WR - ND (#17) v. UM (#44)
Football ROI - ND offers ~2.5x UM's degree value.
Forbes - ND (12) v. UM (132)

Etc.

If Mr. McDermott was better informed on the subject, this would probably have turned out differently for us. But maybe we should have seen this coming, since he has an older son already enrolled at UM. Football parents get hit with more program propaganda than anyone, and they have every incentive to accept it uncritically.

Really wish I knew what sort of academic presentation ND puts on. Can't help but feel like they're not doing enough to adequately communicate ND's academic superiority.

Right. Miami's a fine school, and I don't want to take anything away from it, but if Mr. McDermott means that everything but location basically cancels out ... then I'm with Whiskey that we may need to be making a more effective pitch to our recruits' parents.

If kids pick UM because they figure that the location and personal attraction to the school outweighs ND's academic advantage, I can't be mad ... personal choice. But when they deny the academic advantage, that's frustrating.

Does anybody know if this is an actual quote from the source? In context? I don't know. It sounds like a little too much red meat for Canes fans to me!

(I don't think that KC's parents look at it that way because they are both from Ohioish, and their oldest selected CSU. I am just saying.)

Once again, we will see on Tuesday. Some people [homers mostly] go to great lengths to prove what bitches they are, and this sounds like something someone around that family [in the area] would say, not the McDermott's themselves.

That's my issue. In most cases, we just don't have enough information to know precisely why Recruit X picked another school over ND. But in this case, Mr. McDermott flat out stated that he thinks we don't have an academic advantage over UM.

That's on the coaching staff, or whoever pitched ND's academics to the McDermotts. There are mountains of objective evidence disproving that.

Good point. Where'd you find that quote, Criag?

Academics aside, football doesn't cancel out, fans don't cancel out, tv time doesn't cancel out, schedule doesn't cancel out, etc ,etc.

However, weather, girls, and proximity to home? We lose those battles big time.

Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this son of York;
And all the clouds that low'r'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

This is exactly what Richard meant and his context. Exactly. Our fortunes are upturned. Odds never looked better. We have exactly the same number of recruits as we had with last years "SUPERclass". Why does everyone expect that things turn to shiit?

I went back and looked. In the context of the article it sounds different. That quote coming from mom might have been the whole deal. You are talking about a man for whom the attention being over couldn't come too soon. Man I couldn't imagine what a douchey deal that all would be!

(Please note Whiskey, that quote didn't show what ND's response was!)

Blah.

Sigh. Oh well. Miami offered me a full ride for academics without me even applying/showing any interest in the school because I got national merit and some other things; whereas I was a middle of the pack applicant to ND. So no... they aren't "razor thin"... if they were then everyone in their right mind would go to Miami for school because Coral Gables > South Bend... and that's clearly not the case when you look at the applicant pools for both schools. If we weren't able to sell the academic advantages of ND then there was never a chance of us winning this race.

Want to bet money that the whole family is not on that same page? [With the quote above.]

I had a friend of mine read the quote, and her first words, I bet that is out of context because it sounds just like what you (guys) always say to get in trouble. Cracked me up.

Oldest son is going to grad school, no?

Wants to get in the coaching profession. They have higher asperations in life. I would only let that last quote stand if everyone could guarantee that this was a case where someone hated their upbringing, or something along that line.

Guys,

I don't thing any of those facts are in evidence.

Maybe the quote is from before last weeks visit. Ever think of that? Maybe when they got up to South Bend they realized it was about more than location. I'm just sayin'!

Struttin' with some barbecue!

Struttin' with some barbecue!

The atmosphere at last Thursday's Miami spring practice was circus. Loud, brazen music filled the air. High school recruits and their coaches were loitering on and around the field. Before the barbecue lunch break, smiling linemen were comically trying to catch punts from a jug machine. Hurricane insiders have KC McDermott committing to the U. Is this another, twitter sourced, if no news, send rumors! Remember Alex Collins? The Miami staff, his brother, and his mother had Alex going to Miami. Remember Mario Cristobal? Miami legacy, grateful and enthusiastic to be coaching at the U. This is the third time around for the McDermott family in the recruiting process. Are greasy fingers all you want out of a football scholarship?

Randy and Johnnie McDermott think the recruiting process is unhealthy and too much for teenagers, so this choice, again, will stick.

EDIT: GITF beat me too it. How do you embed a tweet to make it look pretty though?

Players and their families say this all the time, but it's never final till signing day. You never know ...

But assuming he picks Miami ... will Reilly Gibbons get his offer?

More of what we always could've guessed from the 'razor thin' BS. Quite sad. Good luck to him at Miami.

I'm starting to really wonder how much the Manti Te'o thing hurt our impression among parents. Strikingly large amount of recruits so far that seem to have parents who are leaning against ND versus previous years.

not that i disagree with it, i would jus find a different one to use that logic with

You could be right that we don't want to read too much into K.C.'s dad being pro-Miami. K.C.'s dad already has one son at Miami, and he may not want to publicly admit that Miami is a notch below ND academically. That might feel tantamount to calling his older son a dumbass. I've noticed generally that parents sometimes become infatuated with a school once they have one kid in school there ... it's like they subconsciously don't want to acknowledge any of its disadvantages or the relative advantages of other schools because they don't want to open themselves up to the accusation that they should have advised the older child differently.

Even if he and his parents "shut it down," ND will still be involved with him somewhat due to his brother.

I guess that's the best scenario we could hope for under the circumstances.

We'll see what happens with the Miami violations. Plus they're about due for a nasty brawl or other travesty to happen. Things can change but might as well take his word for it for now.
