The only reason to transfer is because you know you are not going to be the starter. If the kid who can not beat out our starter wants to transfer to play at the QB position, that's fine with me.

Those type of kids won't be an asset on the bench if they are that impatient and seemingly so unconfident in their abilities that they can not foresee beating out a QB for the next 3 years, especially one that is certainly prone to injury.

Hate to knock the kid, but in terms of this being labeled a disaster: Give me a Tommy Rees supporting Everett and the team over a Gunner looking out for #1 anyday.

We have an electric Sophomore QB who has one loss as a starter coming back along with two veteran, capable backups, and a young dynamic understudy redshirting. We are more than fine.

I agree with you lax but you know with the way EG plays he is going to miss games. I live his heart but he takes a lot of hits. Potential for bad injury and opens the door for possibly Kiel.

Haha seriously???

If the Trailer Park Boys weren't from Canada you'd have earned a neg rep for that one.

Kelly has his guy starting. I wouldn't mind seeing Hendrix step up his game and earn the backup spot.

Notre Dame quarterback Gunner Kiel plans to transfer schools

Freshman quarterback Gunner Kiel informed head coach Brian Kelly that he plans to transfer from Notre Dame in the near future, a source close to the situation confirmed to Blue & Gold Illustrated Thursday night.

Kiel did not see any action in his first season with the Irish while redshirting behind rookie starter Everett Golson. The Columbus, Ind. native was rated as the No. 1 pro style quarterback in the 2012 recruiting class. Kiel committed to both Indiana and LSU before making an eleventh hour decision to enroll at Notre Dame at the start of the 2012 spring semester.

He took part in a four-man quarterback competition in the spring. During his first season he was mostly responsible for scout team duties. In January, while the Irish were in Miami for the national championship game, Kiel said he planned on staying in South Bend to battle for playing time in the future.

“It’s really hard for any freshman to come in and start, especially at the quarterback position,” he said. “For me it was just a learning experience, coming in and learning the offense.”

Notre Dame has yet to confirm Kiel's planned departure. Kiel had an upward battle to find playing time. Golson, who led the Irish to the BCS Championship game, has three seasons of eligibility remaining. Seniors Andrew Hendrix and experienced starter Tommy Rees are also both scheduled to return next fall.

I hope Gunner knows what he is doing and I hope BK can get him to stay. Gunner came to ND for a reason and BK recruited him for a reason. I personally think his reason is this year and he may not have started as our QB this year, but it was his job to win. I am not completely sold on Golson, I like how he uses his feet to keep the play alive, he has a lot to improve on, and his size scares me. Plus ANYONE could've won with our defense last year. We had 6 turnovers against Michigan this past year and only scored 13 points, we should've scored at least over 20 points!! Gunner needs to stay I think he is our future at ND.

He wasn't unseating Everett. Gunner was an insurance policy in the event Everett didn't live up to expectations. EG has proven he is the future of our program. Once we saw Everett's potential, Gunner's fate was sealed. Should have never come.

To me, this means Hendrix will be back at ND for a 5th year, and may even be the back up this year, with Rees as your emergency guy. Zaire gets the chance to learn without burning any eligibility this year, which most expected anyways.

This is a positive change for the program.

Good luck GK.

Piece from an article 14 months ago.
Irish QBs By The Numbers

21 Transfers among the 49. This includes, most recently, Dayne Crist (Kansas), even though he did earn his Notre Dame degree in December. In other words, about two of every five QB recruits, or 40 percent, end up leaving the school.

This tradition continues..

Shows the importance for bringing in a QB every year. I hope he reconsiders but I see his dilemma sitting behind EG. So glad there is a gap between EG and Zaire.

OK.... I'll get the obvious joke out of the way. Did he really have the chest for ND?

Like most of you this is disappointing to me. I was expecting to see plenty of Gunner on the field this season. Everett is likely to go down sometime in the next couple seasons and that could be the opportunity for Gunner. Oh well, it is good for Hendrix. (hope he doesn't follow)

Amazing homer'ism. When we recruit a 9th TE this board says depth is great, competition is key, they will make each other better. When the #1 qb in the class of 2012 leaves then "who cares he wasn't going to start". When I see this nonsense it makes me wonder what kind of devoid of logic careers you guys have, there is ZERO internal consistency to the homer positions on this board.

This cannot possibly be good news. The staff ****ed this up huge. So much for not enough room on the plane to the Oklahoma game. This was stupid on an epic level and just white washing it will never erase the fact that we just lost a 5* recruit who was number 1 at his position 12 months ago.

Who cares about Kiel? He clearly can't make a decision and wasn't that good in high school tbh. We have a starting QB for the next 3 years, and we got a great backup in this class. I'm not worried about losing Kiel.

It's also important to get guys who can stick with a decision.

You mean like EG, who decommited from UNC or TJ who decommited from Stanford, or Doug Randolph, Eddie V, Max Redfield, and countless others. You don't know Gunner. No need to be a dick.

Yes, it would be great to keep him for depth. Yes, he could be a potential star.

No, you cannot expect to keep a #1 QB recruit on the bench unless he is guaranteed to be a multi-year starter down the road. Anyone who expected he would stick around is crazy... the only question would be whether or not he would be given a chance to truly compete for the starting job this spring. If not, he was 100% gone.

Im not good with this...I dont like seeing him go at all; with all respect to the 2nd 2 QB's, but there is a huge dropoff between Golson and Hendrix/Rees. I got lots of love for Tommy-Boy, but there is no denying the dropoff between Golson and the other 2. Golson is work in progress and needs to get better. If he doesnt get better, then ND will still struggle to score in the red zone. If ND scored better in the red zone last year, they would have been BLOWING teams away.

If Golson improves, and stays healthy then ND is looking good. but if those 2 things dont happen, ND will be kind of a rudder-less ship hoping the defense can keep the game close, needing to squeak out wins 13-10 or 22-13, rather than 41-13. Sooner or later, you dont win all of the '22-13' games and ND will not be able to beat the big boys.

Yes the defense is great and is going to keep games close, but that cant be a crutch to rely upon. There will be times the defense will need the help of the offense, you cant keep putting all that pressure on the defense, even if they are as good as advertised.

With Kiel leaving, this puts more pressure on Golson to get better now. All roads seem to point that Golson is improving, but nothing is guaranteed and Kiel was a nice insurance policy to have (he was ND's reduncancy, or fault tolerence) now the margin for error is smaller.

Since the semester has started I assume he'll stay through the semester and be at spring practice. I guess he could transfer to a school on the quarter system.

I love Golson and stood in his favor last year but I have to admit Kiel may be the better QB. Golson's athletism is superior but I think that Kiel's size is important too.

Kiel may have the superior skills in reading and reacting to defenses. I would not have been at all surprised if Kiel won the job in the fall, sadly.

Starting a 4th new QB in four years would suck.
