Senior Night

Senior Night

Probably didn't want to put more distraction for the big game. Only speculating here, otherwise, it doesn't make much sense like you said.

No speculation needed. Per UND.com:

Notre Dame held its senior night Tuesday even though it still has a home game Monday against third-ranked UConn, hoping to avoid the emotional trappings that come with the event in a game that likely will decide whether the Irish win their second straight Big East or share it with the Huskies. After seeing the Irish hit just 2-of-16 shots to start the game against Syracuse, McGraw was happy with that decision saying the entire team was affected

The 21-game winning streak is the second-longest in ND history, two shy of the record 23 straight wins set by the '01 NC Team.

It was the 18th straight BIG EAST win tying a school record.

ND is 8-1 versus ranked teams.

That was a almost 3 hours women basketball game. I am tired now lol. What a way to step out of ND' court for Skylar and company. Keep it up.

Was crazy. I followed the first two ots on my phone and it seemed like they were down 6 immediately in both. I watched the final 5 and their depth took over. Pretty incredible team.

Awesome game. I was on my way out the door then I heard the crowd go crazy after McBride hit that 3 in OT, then I went back to my seat lol. It's quite amazing to see Skylar go this far. I went to high school with her so I got to see her kill it in high school and to see her go this far is awesome.

Definitely a crazy game. I'm amazed how sloppy Uconn played. ND deserves to win the title this year. They should have won it two years ago, if not for the refs letting that giant girl bull ND over...I don't see anyone knocking she-man out of it this year but hopefully the Irish can come together and get it done!

From that ESPN forum:
"75% of their students cheat to get through their classes. Their Basketball team can't win without the refs. No way Notre Dame won that game. They suck and I hope they get what they deserve.

This pattern of dirty refs is amazing the NCAA ought to do some thing about it. I wouldn't be surprised if they were paid off."

75% of students at ND cheat? I'd love to see the summary of that study....

I know most of us only pay attention to football recruiting and maybe a little bit of men's basketball recruiting.

I'm sitting here bored in the library so i decided to look at how good we do in recruiting for women's basketball. We do pretty darn good and have a better class than UCONN.

We are bringing in 4 girls, 3 of them are 6'2" or taller. Our best recruit is 5 star Forward, Taya Reimer from Indianapolis. All 4 of the recruits have a 92 rating or higher. 3 of them are in the top 50 overall. That's pretty impressive and it seems like they will be good for years to come.

It used to be true, even in the Ruth Riley glory days, that if Coach McGraw wanted someone, all it would take was one visit from Pat Summit or Geno Auriemma and that girl would be headed for Tennessee or Connecticut. Muffet seems, thankfully, to have broken that spell ---- now it's Kelly and the other SEC and other coaches' job to break-up Alabama's stranglehold.

This may be hard to believe but I think the Notre Dame women are only going to get better and better in years to come.

If things went "this way or that way", the women could be making a run at a 3rd consecutive National Title. Considering they lossed the previous two it doesn't look as good.

Now with the premier talent looking at ND and signing with ND. The women's game is no longer owned by UConn and ND is rising up to take hold of it.

USF knocked off RU 42-39 in a defensive battle Saturday. The Bulls only shot 23% from the floor but took 57 shots while limiting RU to only 39 shots. USF made 3 more treys but put up 20 more attempts (28-8). The Bulls won at the foul line as well as they "held" RU to under 37%. Nobody from RU made more than 50% of their FTs. One player was 0-4.

The Last Time Notre Dame And South Florida Met

Hardly resembling the Notre Dame team that handed No. 1 Connecticut its first loss of the season three days earlier, Skylar Diggins and Co. had to work overtime to hold off South Florida 75-71 on Jan. 8 at the Sun Dome in Tampa.

Diggins scored four of her 19 points in overtime, Natalie Achonwa had 20 points and Jewell Loyd finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Fighting Irish, who trailed by six midway through the second half. Kayla McBride missed the majority of the first half with foul trouble and was limited to 12 points on 4-for-14 shooting, but keyed a surge that helped Notre Dame take its first lead since early in the game.

Andrea Smith tied a career high with 33 points (on 13-of-37 shooting) and 11 rebounds for USF, including her team's last nine points of regulation and first four of overtime. Smith's twin, Andrell, had 15 points before fouling out less than a minute into the extra period, and Inga Orekhova added 13.

USF led 35-32 at the break despite shooting 37.8 percent and pushed Notre Dame to overtime for the third time in the last nine meetings between the teams despite shooting 33.3 percent (25 of 75) for the game. The Fighting Irish were only slightly better, shooting 36.8 percent and making the same number of field goals while taking seven fewer shots.

McBride made a long three-pointer and added a three-point play during a 13-2 run Notre Dame put together to turn a 46-42 deficit into their biggest lead of the night, 55-48. But just when it appeared that the Fighting Irish were taking over the game, Andrea Smith found a way to keep USF close.

While Notre Dame was going scoreless from the field over the last six minutes of regulation, the 5-foot-8 senior made a pair of free throws, a 3-pointer and a contested 15-foot jumper to make it 61-61 with 2:02 remaining. After Loyd made two free throws to put the Fighting Irish in front again, Smith answered with another jumper to send it into overtime at 63-all.

Diggins, who missed the final shot of regulation, put Notre Dame ahead for good with a basket a little more than a minute into overtime. She sank free throws for a 74-69 lead with 23.4 seconds left in the extra period, and Michaela Mabrey ensured the Fighting Irish would hold on for their eighth straight victory by making one of two free throws.

Notre Dame is in the midst of a school record-tying 23-game winning streak, matching the season-opening run set by the 2000-01 national championship team.

In those 23 games since its only loss of the season (Dec. 5 vs. third-ranked Baylor), Notre Dame has averaged 83.3 points per game (winning by 25.6 ppg.), shot .467 from the field (.353 from three-point range), posted a rebound margin of +12.8 per game, and forced opponents into an average of 20.7 turnovers per night.

According to the March 4 NCAA statistical report, the Fighting Irish are ranked seventh or better in seven categories --
scoring offense (2nd - now 81.7 ppg.),
free throw percentage (2nd - .795),
scoring margin (3rd - +24.3 ppg.),
rebounding margin (3rd - +11.6 rpg.),
assists (3rd - 19.6 apg.), field goal percentage (5th - .461)
assist/turnover ratio (7th - 1.23).

Diggins Milestones

Diggins Milestones

Diggins (2,229 points) needs 93 points to catch current ND associate coach Beth (Morgan) Cunningham as the program's all-time leading scorer. Diggins is 2nd.

On Feb. 17 Diggins (531 rebounds) became the first women's basketball player in school history with 2,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists in her career. Only one ND men's basketball player has ever compiled that impressive combination of statistics (Chris Thomas from 2001-05).

Diggins (353 steals) already has set the new ND record for career steals, passing assistant coach Niele Ivey's previous school record for career thefts (348 from 1996-2001).

Diggins (691 assists) has an outside shot at the Fighting Irish all-time record for assists held by Mary Gavin (1984-88), needing 87 helpers to reach the mark (Ivey is second, currently 36 ahead of Diggins). Diggins is 3rd.

Combining her points, rebounds, assists and steals, Diggins is one of just six NCAA Division I players since 1999-2000 to amass 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, 500 assists and 300 steals in her career.

Not playing well. Undisciplined defense and USF is getting uncontested 3s all game. Skylar trying to do too much and McBride has done nothing. They're in trouble.

I like how the announcer just noticed Achonwa's bandaid covering her nose ring. She has had one on all year!

USF is good. They gave us trouble in the 1st game

They still didn't play well. Looks like they will escape, but just bad decision making and perimeter defense. Why is Skylar taking the ball to the hole 1on 2, up 6 with a minute left?
