Olympics Drop Wrestling

I have always pushed for the rest of the world to embrace folkstyle, but at this point GR and FS is better than nothing, and ribbon dancing is worse than nothing.......

Agreed. I have always enjoyed folk more than freestyle.

This is disappointing as the Olympics are ultimate pinnacle for a wrestler. It is not like there is an NFL for these kids that are NCAA champions.

I guess they got the WWE

This seems like a horrible decision for several reasons. What's their rationale for dropping wrestling?

I think it boils down to TV ratings.

Well yeah, that makes perfect sense then. How can you keep wrestling and not replace it with a huge TV draw like badminton or ribbon dancing? You're probably right, but this is a bad decision. Wrestling is one of the "basic" sports that you just don't drop, period.

I used to "do" history for intellectual fun, and understanding of who we humans are. Wrestling, Javelin, Discus, Long Jump [using hand-held weights which when you discarded them were supposed to throw you out there farther], various runs, and poetry [no joke] were the original ancient staples of the Greek Olympic games. One of the first individually-named athletes in history, General Milon of Croton, was legend due to being, I believe, a three-time wrestling champion.

The idea that dropping wrestling could have even been uttered around an olympic planners table seems a circumstance coming from beyond Uranus. [semi-crudity intended].

Damnit OMM. I was going to come in here and drop that info and be all proud of myself for using my Greek knowledge but you beat me to it.

But seriously, as a Greek person this saddens me. It also saddens me as a friend to a handful of people who bleed (figuratively and literally) for wrestling and have gotten me into it.

Or beach volleyball. Nothing against Misty May or Keri Walsh but beach volleyball was created purely for spectator ratings.

I would like to clarify that I got all my information from gkIrish, but didn't have the high-quality character to resist publishing it here ahead of him. Conscience getting the better of me, I am forced to now give him all the credit. He's Greek, afterall, and I'm only Irish. All we knew how to do in the "good old days" was cut off someone's head so we could play kickball [see the legend of Cuchullain].

Fortunately THAT sport, while exciting, never made the Olympics.

Dont forget not too long ago Rulon Gardner provided one of the most publicized and inspirational Olympic story lines of all-time. MILLIONS tuned in to see him take on Karelin.

I laughed. Seriously though--- respect for knowing all that.

Honest question. Why not just add wrestling to the Winter Games?

I've never wrestled or been a big fan, but I find it absolutely ridiculous to consider dropping it. As i posted in another thread, I love getting players with strong wrestling backgrounds.

Edit:Sorry, let me be clearer. I've never been a big fan of watching wrestling. I'm a huge fan of its benefits to those who participate.

I can see how that affects NCAA participation but not how it affects FILA. No it is more like simple greed and stupidity. And like someone said earlier, we now have proof of an organization as corrupt as the SEC.

Wrestling is a winter sport so in ways it would make sense. All Winter Olympic sports must have snow ice. Rookie Olympic mistake.

Honestly you make a good point. I don't know.

I love the sport of wrestling done it since the age of 5 now coach it at the high school level. With that being said wrestling needs to become more appealing to watch for the casual fan. Freestyle in particular incourages scoreing and that's what fans want to see! I hope this is a ploy to raise awareness for the sport and to drum up more funds but we will have to wate and see. On a side note there are 3 petions currently available on the whitehouse web site to save the sport, go sign it any little bit helps:)

Does anyone think this could open the door for MMA into the olympics?

The only thing is how would you run MMA in the Olympics? Would it be a 14 day tournament? I have a feeling this will be reversed but what do you tell guys like Ed Ruth David Taylor and Kyle Dake about their futures? I hope this someway promotes the sport and more networks like BTN start carrying more events ! I know this is a football board but it is amazing that Kyle Dake may win four national titles at four different weight classes. That's like being an all-American on all three levels of the defense.

Luckily for those 3 they're have 2016.

What Dake is going to attempt is ridiculous. He's already the first guy to win 3 titles at 3 different weights, and going for 4 in 4. Plus he never redshirted.

If you have done so, please just "Like" the Facebook page to show your support for Olympic wrestlings.

I can't wait for him and Ramos at the big tens! I love Ramos been watching him since he was in high school, but he definitely has his work cut out for himself!

I was in Steiber's district in high school. The "Monroeville Four," from a little town no one had ever heard of DOMINATED, Ohio and the country in their time there.

I think the most amazing one was actually Chris Phillips. Unfortunately he doesn't take school very seriously so I doubt we'll ever see him suit up for Ohio State, but I'll go to my grave thinking he was better than Steiber.

When he was a freshman at 171lbs, he went to the Ironman (arguably tougher than any state tournament) and beat Huddleston (Georgia state champ, pinned him in 15 seconds), Deciantis (North Alleghany, now wrestles at Pittsburgh), Peltier (Blair Academy, now wrestles at Maryland), Thomusseit (St. Paris Graham, now wrestles at Pittsburgh), and Roddy (St. Edward, now wrestled at Northwestern). He basically beat the top three wrestlers in the country at that weight back-to-back-to-back, as a 14-year old 171-pounder. That's the stuff of legend.
