Everything about this story was stupid, but there was plenty of blame to go around. Clearly the people behind the hoax are to blame. Manti made a big mistake by lying and saying he met the girlfriend when he didn't. He also deserves blame for continuing to do interviews during the season about it and calling her the ''love of his life''. The media should have fact checked some of the things Manti said instead of running with a story just because it sounded good.

I'm not sure I'd agree that it's "big." If she had actually died, it's a useless fact. I would venture to believe that these sort of cons feed off the fact that people don't want to say they haven't met.

He also deserves blame for continuing to do interviews during the season about it and calling her the ''love of his life''.

Why? He didn't know she was <100% dead until December 6th--in the midst of the award show circuit. He didn't know what was going on, that much is pretty obvious and totally understandable.

The media should have fact checked some of the things Manti said instead of running with a story just because it sounded good.

Totally agree there. One single person look for an obituary? lololol

I was going to post this too, so I'll just bump it instead. More evidence showing Manti wasn't in on it, and how extensive the hoax was. Of course, clowns like Stephen A. Screamer, Tiki Barber and even one of our very own posters (look above this post) will still blame Manti and still think he was in on it, but those guys are neanderthals who are idiots (esp Tiki "I'm the King of Ruining a Career" Barber)...

I am at the point where I wonder if there is much to be gained with Manti's interview with Couric. It might make us (ND fans) feel better but I think most people have made up their mind one way or the other and have moved on.

Obviously the rumor mongers in the media aren't going to change their mind. There won't be a day where everyone goes "oh, Manti was telling the truth" and the world is right again. Unless Deadspin retracts their (dshans) conclusion (80%), the fodder is there (dshans) for the haters.

I'll still be watching Thursday, dammit.

I agree. It is unlikely that this will do him any good and will just provide those who have already made up their mind with more ammo to blast him with. He should just focus on the draft and let this die.

I just can't get over the fact that people are still questioning NDs involvement in this at all. "Part of Te'os Heisman Campaign" and the "ND PR Machine was in full service!"

The hatred is mind numbing. Is it that people are just waiting for the shoe to drop? There can't be a clean cut wholesome kid anymore?

A snippet from that story above is so damn true:

For contrast, think about this - from 2005-2010, at least 31 off-the-field arrests involving 25 of University of Flordia players occurred. Some were simply alcohol possession and disorderly conduct but many involved charges of violence and felonies.

31 arrests, 25 players.

Tom Socca (Deadspin) in reference to the 80% quote:

It hinged on exactly that. That's exactly why Deadspin couldn't even defend it's own argument as to why they believed Te'o to be in on it.

Winner, winner chicken dinner! Deadspin spun a narrative of Te'o's involvement (one that sadly many people still believe) based on:

1. This "80%" quote... no other source has pointed to Manti being involved.
2. Manti and Tuiasosopo being long time family friends and therefor able to plan this... which they aren't, they never met before November 2012 and this thing started in 2008.

#1 hasn't been corroborated by a single other person and #2 has been straight up disproved. Yet they REFUSE to admit they might have rushed to judgement even a little bit or ran the article with inappropriate slant. That's what you get when you don't get out in front of a story and let a blog with a history of saying they hate you break the news.

Pretty much perfectly said, all in one concise nutshell. Reps.

Face of Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend: Story is 'twisted and confusing' - TODAY News

"“The past five years, (Tuiasosopo) has literally been stalking my Facebook and stealing my photos,’’ O’Meara said. “Ronny has called and not only confessed, but he has also apologized. I don’t think there’s anything he could say to me that would fix this.’’
O’Meara claims that in December she received an odd message on Facebook from Tuisasopo, who she had not spoken to in years. He said he had a cousin involved in a car accident who had seen O’Meara’s Facebook photos and thought she was pretty, so Tuiasosopo asked if she could take a picture for his cousin. She complied, and the photo was used as part of the hoax. O’Meara was stunned when she received a phone call from the Deadspin.com reporters, who kept her identity a secret before she was eventually outed by several other media outlets.
Tuiasosopo has not responded to multiple calls for comment from NBC News. His father wrote on Facebook that “It’s my hope and prayer that we allow the truth to take its course, wherever that may lead.’’
O’Meara, a marketing executive in Los Angeles, will speak more about her story in a live interview Wednesday on TODAY."

For the life of me I can't figure out why the people that are suppose to be giving advice to Teo are ever letting him do this interview. Why would Katie Couric ever want to do this or ABC letting her. People have already made up their minds. The NFL is going to do their own investigation regardless of what is said Thursday. Sure Katie Couric will probably have her highest ratings yet with the show and will increase the awareness of her show. Unless she can somehow make him slip up or accuse him of knowing or bring up something new she is going to feel the hate of public opinion too. I see a lose lose situation for everyone.

I'm sure it will be a very friendly interview that won't challenge Teo's story and will focus on Teo's emotions throughout. This won't be Katie Couric/Sarah Palin.

Woman in Te'o fake girlfriend photo speaks out - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Schedule and BCS Rankings

NEW YORK (AP) - The woman whose photo was used as the "face" of the Twitter account of Manti Te'o's supposed girlfriend says the man allegedly behind the hoax confessed and apologized to her.

Diane O'Meara told NBC's "Today" show Tuesday that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo used pictures of her without her knowledge in creating a fake woman called Lennay Kekua. Te'o asserts he was tricked into an online romance with Kekua and, until last week, believed she died of leukemia in September.

O'Meara went to high school in California with Tuiasosopo, but she says they're not close. He called to apologize Jan. 16, the day Deadspin.com broke the hoax story, she said.

"I don't think there's anything he could say to me that would fix this," said O'Meara, a 23-year-old marketing executive in Los Angeles.

O'Meara said she had never had any contact with Te'o, and that for five years, Tuiasosopo "has literally been stalking my Facebook and stealing my photos."

Tuiasosopo has not spoken publicly since the news broke. His family has said they may speak out this week.

Is that confirmed? Because that would be awesome.

At this point I don't care if he was involved, I just want to go on thinking he wasn't.

Yes it's confirmed. Probably earlier on this thread, but whenever it was reported she would interview Manti, it was reported they shared a pr rep.

I've done a pretty good job staying out of this thread, and simply turning the TV channel. I went from a state of WTF to where I now am, disappointed with the world... No longer can simple innocense or naivety exist. People are just too cruel. I don't find any fault with Manti. A matter a fact I applaud his innocence, his trust, and his willingness to live with his heart on his sleeve. Unfortunately that type of love and human spirit often get rewarded with cruelty and ridicule. Instead of asking what is wrong with Manti, or what did Manti do wrong, ask yourself what is wrong the world. We put Manti on a pedestal, and we did it for good reason. Those reasons are true now more than ever. It's just a shame that this will likely change Manti's willingness to trust, love, and speak from the heart going forward. I hope not.

JP - not far fetched at all.

Last couple posts in this chain inside the thread here "get it". JP's and now this.

Its funny how the "worldlier" among us judge so harshley...use names like deadspin and Wilbon as the source of the "truth" and justification for their judgement...as if the perspective from where they come could ever conceive of "truth" for its own sake...

LOL .... Well they certainly have something in common now. Can you imagine what would happen the first time he would accidently call her Lennay?

What if Te'o pulled this whole thing off to meet O'Meara? All kidding aside, I wouldn't be surprised if Te'o reached out to apologize to her for what she had to go through.
