We have room for at least 2-3.

Right. But I am just assuming that we get Vanderdoes, Isaac, and maybe one more def. player. This would leave Smythe left out right. Like say, I am just assuming we fill all three spots. Do we then assume that the coaching staff would take one less fifth year to get a guy like Smythe? Then we must open the question of who does ND take recruiting wise compared to keeping a fifth year guy?

Smythe is coming the same weekend as Eddie and most other targets and was officially re-offered, so if he wanted to commit this weekend (he is by far the most likely to do so IMO) he would definitely not be left out.

Eddie has a spot no matter what. Prevot's and Isaac's visits are up in the air. Hollins is not a lock. We look to be running third going into Fitts' visit.

I think we end up with at least 2-3 more commits, but I am more pessimistic on the numbers and timeline than you I think. Only thing I care about is getting Eddie and keeping our current commits. The rest is gravy to me.

Agree as long as we can keep this class together and make a strong push for Eddie not really worried about the other spot or two. With that said I think we have a much better chance at landing hollins this weekend than most may think.

Lifted from Who Is Likely Next (2013):

17 Fr + 22 So + 18 Jr = 57.

85 - 57 = 28 spots for 2013 commits + 5Ys.

28 - 22 = 6 spots for new 2013 commits + 5Ys.

Assuming 1 medical (Nichols) and 1 transfer (?), that jumps up to 8 spots.

So we've got at least 6 spots for 2013 commits and 5Ys. Z. Martin, Watt and Fox are all crucial to our prospects for 2013; I'm certain the staff wouldn't take him over any of those three, so in the scenario you've envisioned, he would probably get left out. I'm not sure they would take him over Calabrese either.

But the order in which those recruits might commit is anyone's guess. Smythe is considered a big ND lean, so realistically speaking, he's unlikely to get frozen out if the staff is willing to take his verbal over Prevot, Hollins, etc.

Unanticipated decommitments, medicals and transfers could free up even more space, so the chances that your scenario actually happens seem pretty low.

I guess my question then would be: Would ND be better off with Smythe over a Prevot or Hollins? I guess that is my main question behind all of this. IF numbers were limited.

No. No way IMO.

I'll take an elite speed rusher off the edge to add depth to our front seven over anything. Especially another tight end with Heurman already on campus.

I agree, but do you see prevot and hollies as elite? If so how many pass rushers are elite? 5,10...I just don't see either of them as elite. I think with a lot of work they both could contribute to our elite defense (top 5) jmho

Thank you, this is what I was getting at. IF the number crunch did happen.

Elite may have been a little strong but these guys have really high ceilings. Hollins first step is elite, I'll say that.

Depends on the order. If Smythe wants in first I think they take his pledge. If Hollins or Prevot have already commited then I don't know. If Hollins/Prevot and Vanderdoes have pledged then I doubt it. It is all about how is first probably, besides Vanderdoes who you take no matter what.

The staff reportedly wants an edge rusher and Vanderdoes. There's been little effort to replace Mattingly with a similarly versatile big skill player (like Smythe), so I assume he's a contingency plan. If we've got room, they'll take him, but not over Prevot, Hollins, Vanderdoes or Fitts.

Smythe's recruitment reminds me of hercules' from a few years ago..a prototypical "big" plucked very late from a traditional local power.

I think this is a great point. He might be slightly smaller, but if he has close to the same athleticism, great comparison. I don't think any of us would mind another Hercules haha.

This is solid. I think you can assume that we will take 3 guys to close out this class if they want to come especially with no 6th year for Slaughter. I try to touch on this in the upshot thread. I also think the way things seem to be trending that our staff would definitely take Smythe if he wants in without really worrying about "needs" like an edge rusher.

In fact, I think there is a solid chance we get Smythe to pop this weekend if the staff pushes hard for him.

Can't argue against a top 250 player joining the fold. Between ND and Stanford, I think they know how to mold a TE or two. Great size. Looks more Kyle Rudolph then Tyler Eifert.

I was a pretty big critic of this kid when they first offered him, it was a big head scratcher to me. Then I kept thinking about and how our offense is run. If I had to guess, 2 tight ends are on the field 65% of the time. We could really use this kid, maybe not next year but Smythe and Hueurman would be quite the combo

I have to agree. At first, w/ the limited number of spots, I was a little skeptical of adding another TE thus eliminating the potential to sign someone else. However, like you pointed out, ND uses a ton of two TE sets and the coaches have told Smythe, they're not overloaded at the position and can use another this cycle. I think he'll pop this weekend and cancel is UM trip.....just a gut feeling after reading the article posted above.

So we could have in two years -and I'm just spit balling here - a Rudolph (Smythe), Eifert (Heuerman), a Michael Floyd (Daniels), a Golden Tate (Neal et al), a Theo (Folston/Carlise), and a monster offensive line?

... Absolutely beautiful. I wouldn't even know where to begin in trying to cover that.

Rudolph amd Floyd were five star talents.

I understand that, and Tyler Eifert was a 3star. It was more about the comparison to their presence and the match-up problems they give a defense. A linebacker is still going to have to cover two physical, tall, athletic, TEs. Most teams aren't built for that. Add in the other factors like a speed guy and a possession wr then the safeties have to hang back which leaves the middle of the field wide open along with several single coverage choices. It makes a a qbs job pitch and catch
