Totally agree, but the fact remains that Manti did embellish the story, and he allowed it to snowball. I am certainly not arguing that that makes him a bad guy. I love the guy. I just don't believe we're doing him any favors by making excuses for him or not admitting what level of responsibility he actually does have here. I really do feel terrible for him, but he also bears at least some responsibility for allowing the story to become as big as it is.

I understand there is likely some point where Manti lied. I think no one can assume he lied about any aspect of the said relationship until he knew it was a hoax. By that I mean we will never know what he/she/it told him, and if he was simply parroting that info.

When he knew...I still think that point in time is hard to determine. Lets assume anything after Jack verified w/ investigators the thing was a hoax. Any time before that...mmmm...I don't think you can say with certainty. So we are talking about roughly a two week period where it was clear this thing was a hoax...yes?

Even when he knew it was a hoax (in that two week period) I thought there was concern this thing would end with extortion, and they considered playing it out...how long did that decision take...what was it? I would say the extortion angle would certainly necessitate carying on the "story"...and if he "lied" he did so to further a criminal case...can't really judge a guy for that.

If they all decided to dump the extortion idea, were there other investigations happening which still necesitated carrying on the "story"...for instance, when SHTF from deadspin...accounts dropped, were recreated, copied...whats that do to viability as evidence...these guys Jack hired were likely computer forensic guys...did they keep going...did the Feds, or another private company retained by the Teos pick up the investigation...if so they'd all say keep it going...more evidence is better, and its easier to complete a computer subpeona, and all the forensic support to make it evidence if the account is still live...yes?

In the absence of Manti saying he just lied because he was freaked out, embarassed, looking out for the team...hard to say what motivated him to say what he said in that two week period...but I'm expecting we'll know from the man here real soon.

EDIT: well, and as far as saying he met her...I think he lied there...we all know why, or likely why. But hey if I can forgive a president for lying about a nobber, I can forgive a college student for claiming he met someone.

So ESPN can't even get the details correct of the interview they are conducting? Sounds about right.

Thats why I wondered earlier if it were normal to post the pic and list who was present, or if it was them stirring the pot. Seems they were stirring.

I was speaking to the fact that there has been plenty of time just since the NCG where Te'o could have spoken on the situation, even prior the the story breaking, that could have avoided some of the current state of the situation

That's certainly true, but Te'o has been represented by Tom Condon since the NCG; that's the guy who's calling the shots. Terrible shame that he decided to delay Te'o's initial planned press conference last Monday. Would have headed off 95% of this.

What I think is so fun about this whole scenario is that because of shoddy journalism and pure laziness by the media, the media has been handed the best story in years and will have enough to write about forever. Laziness and being terrible at your job pays off.

Unfortunately its a close game and this may take 30+

Pretty damn entertaining game though. Durant is incredible. From just last year to this year it's remarkable how much he got better. He was amazing last year he's even better now.

Yep. If they'd gotten ahead of Deadspin on this story (or if Deadspin had given Te'o a reasonable chance to comment before they hit "publish") the narrative would have been completely different from the start. For whatever reason, they waited.
And, even now, waiting two and a half days and doing a single-reporter, off-camera interview - in contrast with Swarbrick's full-on live presser the night it broke - just feeds those who think Te'o's trying to hide something. Whoever is devising Teo's media strategy here is doing him no favors.

I hate the last 2 minutes of basketball games. They seem to take a half hour.

Re Te'o interview: We had no parameters on questions. While no tv cameras were permitted and use of audio was limited, we can use anything from the interview across our outlets.

After all this settles, in my heart I hope Tuiasosopo doesn't harm himself or take his own life or do anything stupid. He messed up BIG BIG BIG BIG time. Own up to your mistakes, own up to everything and pray that god forgives you, and try to carry on with your life.

.......and maybe just get an *ss beating too.

I don't think we're going to hear anything shocking, just his denial. I hope he is transparent about the white lies and sincerely explains why he told them (embarrassed, etc.) then he can begin the slow walk away from this mess. Hopefully things only get better for him from tonight forward.

Crap, looks like overtime...

“@McMurphyESPN: Manti Te'o told @JeremySchaap he was not involved w/hoax, but said it affected his play in BCS title game”

Even if it did effect his play I really wish he didn't even mention that
