So this guy and his cousins pulled an elaborate scam on Manti. Sucks for Manti. He looks very gullible and naive right now. I still dont understand why he didnt come forward before any one else had a chance to break this story.

I imagine it had something to do with not wanting to look like a total #ss in front of the whole country. Must be tough to be in his shoes right now if he was tricked so badly.

I thought the same thing at first, but the more info that comes out in his favor before he speaks makes his story that much easier to follow. If the story starts to strangle the character that did this and he sings, then Manti's silence looks to be brilliant. His innocence is proved by others.

May Manti be filled with loving kindness;

May Manti be healthy and strong;

May Manti be free of all dangers, internal or external.

May Manti be filled with the ease of well being.

May Manti be happy!

i really want to have the girl on the other end of all the phone calls ID'd.

she is a sick and as much as a SCUMBAG in all this as RT.

there may a civil war brewing out in the islands...Tuisapsopos vs the Teos (Hatfiedls vs McCoys)...my money is on the Teo's. in that society/culture to do this to "one of your own" makes this so bad for their community-they will mete this out in their own way. could get ugly!

Did Manti and the perpetrator know each other? I thought the Deadspin article said they were friends.

Look.

Te'o was not immediately convinced that the voice on the sixth was his girlfriend. The waters of denial run deep. That plays in all of this.

Also, the more I hear, the more I think this thing is being looked at for substantial criminal charges. Think about it. One of the few things everybody agrees upon is that Manti's performance in the NC game was affected.

I don't think that anybody would construct anything this elaborate to gain a Heisman, or a point spread advantage; but someone would do it to obtain long term financial gain.

And if someone untoward found out about it in December, THEY might have used it for a point spread advantage. If that is the case you have big time Feds all over it, and you won't even know about it. (Quite before the storm.)

was wandering about that...ya know, if you take the aspect financial motivation...and in light of Manti's uncles interview (he seemed to think the guy was after money)...in that scenario, catfishing may have been the game...but can't help but wander if the prize was $$$ this time.

wait, I left this thread...damn it bogs...

It's beginning to look now like Lennay may have "introduced" Manti to Tuiasosopo. Not sure all the details are out about their relationship yet though. I haven't seen anything to indicate that they had more than a casual Twitter relationship before Lennay.

On a side note concerning the several reports about teammates questioning wheher Lennay was real or not and the extra attention Manti was getting. If this is true, BK did a hell of a job keeping this team focused and on track. Not all of the players are going to like each other and some might be jealous where they could stir something up, but you never saw that all year.

You mean 2012?

Well, that therein lies the problem with the the media reporting on things. Do we not have the same situation as we do when the whole girlfriend died media shitstorm?

The article didnt seem to fact check enough, as we are finding out even more about the situation as days go by. Plus they broke the story on the premise that Manti was actually involved with everything. They shouldve kept a neutral approach when they broke the story. That is break the story but dont attach any accusations as to whether Manti was involved or not.

True. But from getting text messages from non-ND fans, hearing about it in person from people, reading what people are saying across neutral message boards, etc... there are a LOT of people, who despite todays developments, are still slamming Te'o. Its like they are willing to call everything that went against Te'o fact, but anything thats in favor of him being duped isnt fact.

If he was the one to "break" the story with I suppose just the same statement he has already released, and then allowed the information to flow out as it has, I think there is less mockery, ridicule and character assassination as I have seen in these last few days.

Ah, the Adam Schefter approach. Break the news first, fact check later.

Good on Deadspin for looking into it. Something that should've been done a long time ago. But they're just as much at fault here as every other news outlet for reporting inaccuracies and accusations in the first place.

Right, but at this point silence is golden.

As to those that are texting, calling, facebooking, etc negative about Manti; they would do that no matter what. I am sure they were doing it to you after the NCG. They are ND haters and they will hate no matter what comes out. If Manti spoke, they would not believe him anyway.

Also, it would have been a huge distraction for the team...

its almost like the espn's and websites milking this for all its worth are bummed out now that this is breaking mantis way with all the facts coming out. (there go the ratings and hits).

whats worse is that this is breaking very quickly and old media/as well as the new media are NOT keeping up with all of it. they are behind on the facts on their scrolls, on air discussions etc.

its a clown show. no journalistic integrity or desire to actaully get to the TRUTH.
facts arenot fitting their agenda anymore.

so disappointed in our "free press".

where have you gone Bob Woodward

i got that impression too. they are now holding on so dearly to anything he said after 12/6 about lennay as proof of his guilt, but manti can counter that with "i was not convinced the person who called was the voice" or something along those lines. jack just said manti got a call that day. i need to reread the transcript, but i dont remember him saying that manti KNEW it was a hoax the day he got the call.

edit: grammar/spelling

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says the school has encouraged linebacker Manti Te'o to speak publicly - and soon - about being the victim of a hoax involving a dead girlfriend who never existed.

Swarbrick said during the taping of his weekly radio show, which airs regionally on Saturday but was posted online as a podcast on Friday, that Te'o has to explain exactly how he was duped into an online relationship with a woman whose "death" was then faked by the perpetrators of the hoax.

"I don't have any specific knowledge as to how and when, but I can't fathom a circumstance where it doesn't (happen). I sort of share everybody's view that it has to happen. We are certainly encouraging it to happen. We think it's important and we'd like to see it happen sooner rather than later," Swarbrick said.
Swarbrick added that before Deadspin.com broke the news with a lengthy report on Wednesday, Te'o and his family had planned to go public with the story Monday.

"Sometimes the best laid plans don't quite work, and this was an example of that. Because the family lost the opportunity in some ways to control the story," he said.

He said the university doesn't have anything more to add.

"It is in the Te'o family's court," he said. "We are very much encouraging them. I hope by the time people are listening to this they have made themselves available to explain and to take questions, because we think that's in everybody's interest. It's certainly our expectation at Notre Dame that they would do that."

Swarbrick said again he is confident Te'o is the victim and did not back away from the strong support he gave the All-American during a news conference Wednesday night, when the AD said an investigation done by a firm hired by the school turned up evidence that supports Te'o's claim he was not involved.

Swarbrick said he will continue to believe that until given "compelling evidence to the contrary."

He said he understands why some people are skeptical about Te'o's story.

"They have every right to say that," Swarbrick said "Now I have some more information than they have. But they have every right to say that. I don't feel any sort of ill will toward that position. If I was on the outside of this presented with the only facts I have at this point - and importantly at the time we're recording this Manti has yet to speak publicly - I think that skepticism is easy to understand. I just ask those people to apply the same skepticism to everything about this.

"I have no doubt the perpetrators have a story they will yet spin about what went on here. I hope skepticism also greets that when they're articulating what that is."

It said on ESPN Manti was meeting with family and advisors I think on how to deal with this. Probably pretty obvious but I think we will see him talk about it sometime soon hopefully.
