ND says they found out on December 26th that it was a hoax... and did nothing to correct the facts.

Notre Dame Statement: Manti Te’o

On Dec. 26, Notre Dame coaches were informed by Manti Te’o and his parents that Manti had been the victim of what appears to be a hoax in which someone using the fictitious name Lennay Kekua apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia. The University immediately initiated an investigation to assist Manti and his family in discovering the motive for and nature of this hoax. While the proper authorities will continue to investigate this troubling matter, this appears to be, at a minimum, a sad and very cruel deception to entertain its perpetrators.

So he basically did the entire awards circuit without revealing that it was a hoax after they knew. WOW.

Temped to delete this for absurdity. Why don't we wait until we have something approaching the full story before we declare that Te'o will be a pariah in the NFL?

Your right. My attempt was to wrap my head around this situation and the possible ramifications if it were true. I am not rushing to judgement and if it appeared that way-that was not my intent. Again, I am 100% pulling for Manti and all of ND on this!!!

Helps me to understand why he did not seem to be himself on the field at all. Something seemed very wrong, and as it turns out, it was...

So the way this leaves Manti clean is by stating this was an internet GF that he never met and that was who he referred to as "Love of his life" in interviews...

don't see that ending well either... goodness.

I wouldn't do anything publicly either. That's so embarrassing for Manti, I'd try to keep it on the dl as well.

Notre Dame. What have you done

What did Notre Dame do? This says nothing about the University. They did nothing wrong. This is a trusting kid who got duped. He obviously is very religious and felt this was a spiritual relationship and didnt need to meet face to face, or something like that.

They knew the day after Christmas. Wow.

What would have been accomplished by announcing the hoax immediately? Is it scandalous if they kept it under wraps in the hope of saving Te'o some embarrassment?

The big question here is whether Te'o was involved or not. Notre Dame is staking a loud claim that he got duped and had no involvement.

Definitely needs to be played up as the innocent victim. Even if he isn't. And I really hope he is.

This is a really cruel hoax if that is what it is.

you serious, clark?

They knew about this on December 26th and we are just hearing about it now, in this way. Terrible, terrible PR at best.

Exactly. I don't think it's ND's place to embarrass Manti and drag him through painful memories just to correct the public record.

This may explain why he played so poorly in the NCG. He was clearly not himself.
