Campbell Sees ND As Potential Fit

Jayru Campbell hasn’t even started his sophomore year of high school, but the recruiting process is in full swing for the 2015 Detroit quarterback.

Campbell, who helped lead Cass Tech to a state title as a freshman, already owns offers from Notre Dame and Alabama and made trips to both campuses this summer. Campbell, who also has an offer from Eastern Michigan, made a stop at Notre Dame for the Irish’s Future Stars Camp on Friday.

“It went pretty good,” said Campbell, who also made a trip to Michigan this month. “Everything was smooth.”

The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder had the chance to throw the ball in front of Irish head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Chuck Martin.

“I learned a little something about Notre Dame from visiting the campus,” said Campbell. “It was a nice visit.”

Martin was impressed with what he saw.

“Coach Martin told me I threw the ball pretty good,” Campbell recounted. “He just wants me to work on my footwork a little bit more. He said that they really like me.

“I like their coaching style. They seem like pretty cool coaches.”

Campbell had the opportunity to find out what the Irish are looking for in signal-callers.

“I learned the type of quarterback they want,” he said. “They really want an accurate quarterback, not too much of a speed quarterback or a fast quarterback. They just really want somebody who’s accurate.”

Campbell thinks he could end up fitting that bill for the Irish down the road.

“I believe that I could someday be a Notre Dame quarterback,” he said. “I love the campus; I really do love the campus.

“The environment, it's just all nice and clean. It just seems like one day I could probably call it home.”

It’s still early, but the Irish are firmly entrenched among Campbell’s current favorites.

“Notre Dame was my second offer and of my top five schools, Notre Dame is definitely in there,” said Campbell, who also noted that Alabama, UCLA, Michigan, and Ohio State would be included as well.

Campbell will be busy with 7-on-7 football camps and AAU basketball tournaments the rest of the summer and isn’t sure if he’ll be making anymore college trips soon, but would welcome the chance to return to Notre Dame.

“I would love to visit again because I really liked."

From 247: “I like Alabama but Notre Dame catches my attention because of the academics there."

Wants to decide after his junior season... which would be 1 1/2-2 years from now. Grew up a Michigan fan (obviously) but we have definitely made a good first impression.

He summed it up well:

“@7Figure_Jayru: To be honest I really like Notre Dame... Its only 2012 though I got 3 years to decide”

Nope, not good enough. Kelly needs to lock these kids down now, or else he fails as a recruiter on the big stage

Us taking a Cass Tech kid that Michigan wants would be like us going into Mission Viejo and taking a kid USC wants. Just doesn't happen

Why do you think we're getting after them so early? Lord knows we would love to do anything from letting UM get ALL of these really talented Cass Tech kids.

-Sophomore signal-caller Jayru Campbell will be making his second visit to Michigan this fall, previously attending the Air Force game. He’s also attended two games at Michigan State where he watched the Spartans take on Boise State and Ohio State. Alabama, Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan have already offered the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Campbell, and he said he keeps in regular touch with both the Crimson Tide and Irish coaching staffs. Other schools showing personal interest includes Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Nebraska.

I'm more interested in how much he can bench. Not sure if he even lifts, bro.

Lol, was about to do the same thing. GB was a great contributor to this site. But he made a lot of statements about kids being locks to certain places (they may have been heavy leans to those places at those times) which have ended up being way off the mark.

Agreed. I enjoy irony.

Tweet indicates he has an offer which is also listed on 247. Can someone update the thread to indicate the offer.

This statement in June was the most true words ever spoken. Now we are in position to turn the tides if you will. Pull Redfield and keep the winning ways rolling strong, got a chance with Jayru! Like I said you were spot on with this but damn is it nice to be in position to go into SCum's bread and butter and steal our rivals prize kids!
