I have no idea how someone could pick anyone over Tyler Eifert at the TE position, nothing against Mr. Ertz who is no doubt a physical specimen.

Of course the Mackey Award winner and Mackey finalist for last year doesn't make it. Makes too much sense.

SMH. ESPN.

Going off of pure stats:

Ertz: 66 receptions, 837 yards, 12.7 avg, 6 touchdowns
Eifert: 44 receptions, 624 yards, 14.2 avg, 4 touchdowns

Ertz also had 11 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown against Oregon.

Why do you people always make it an ESPN thing? The most prestigious All-American team, The Walter Camp AA Team, had Ertz as the TE also.

Did they have a stat for clutch I mean clutch catches, or one for not dropping anything, because I saw Ertz drop some this year, a couple in some pretty important situations in some pretty important games. Or how about one for big blocks I am sure Ertz does well here, but so did the Mackey Award winner.

Not to be argumentative, but if ESPN is just going to give awards based on regurgitating final stat lines, they probably haven't watched enough games or they aren't versed in the subtleties enough to be qualified to give awards.

Let's see who gets drafted first, leave it to the experts.

I actually thought they did a great job. I love Eifert and truly believe that he is the best TE in the game, but Ertz had a better season. I also think Kelly has done an amazing job here, but I would vote for O'Brien too (which is saying a lot, since I thought he was a bad hire).

Everything else was pretty much how I thought it should be.

People were shutting Eifert down most of the year and daring us to run it. Kind of had a down year due to scheming.

I thought ESPN actually did a good job, Ertz is deserving, and so is O'Brien.

The only true problem I have with the list is O'Brien as the Coach instead of BK. Other than that I'm pretty much fine with it.

One other thing, stepping out of my haterism towards FSU, Bjorn Werner should have made the DL some where.

I don't want to belabor this because I know it was discussed in other threads, but Penn State beat Northwestern and Wisconsin (both at home) and that is pretty much it. Their schedule was just putrid. I get that he had to deal with adversity and the sympathy vote and everything, but they didn't beat anyone with the exception of Wisconsin that most people wouldn't have picked them to beat anyways before the season started. Is it because they started 0-2 and everyone expected them to roll over an quit?

Do wins against Temple, Illinois, Navy, Iowa, Purdue, and Indiana really convince you that O'Brien was 'Coach of the Year'?

Agreed on all accounts. It's as if after he coached Penn State to embarrassing losses to Ohio and UVA people cam up with new expectations for their season... which he then exceeded... but they were low because they had two HORRIBLE losses. Brian Kelly took an unranked team to #1 and undefeated and playing in the championship... the first time that has EVER happened. The choice is beyond obvious.

Ertz totally deserves to be first team AA though and the only reason Eifert won Mackey is because they felt bad for robbing him last year.

No more than Kelly beating Navy, Purdue, Wake Forest, Boston College or Pitt? You can't push Manti for the Heisman because his candidacy was more than just stats then say OBrien wasn't deserving because he didn't win enough this year. Think about the job that you would have had to do there. Biggest scandal at any program, ever. Following Paterno, losing 4 or more key starters, including your first string RB.

I can't fault them for giving it to him, just like I can't fault them for giving the Heisman to Manziel.

I listed every PSU win, you listed ND's weakest opponents. As Lax said, they were picked to win 7 games before the season started. Kelly took a team from unranked to the BCS title game.

The end.

Yes but it's not like Brian Kelly was taking the '01 Miami Hurricanes into the season with a preseason #1 ranking. BK took an unranked team to an undefeated season against what everyone thought was the toughest schedule in the land. BK's team defied expectations by 4-5 wins whereas BO's team defied expectations by about 1-2 wins. BK's team owns marquee wins over Michigan, Oklahoma, and USC. What marquee wins did PSU achieve this year?

Expectations for PSU were only drastically low after they had a horrid start to the year. PSU went 8-4 which if they were postseason eligible would land them in a mid-level bowl. Notre Dame is undefeated, ranked #1 and heading to the NCG. Oh and he did this with a redshirt Freshman at QB and a patchwork secondary. We beat 10 teams with enough wins to go to a bowl game. In no rational universe is Bill O'Brien the COY over Brian Kelly.

What those guys said.

O'Brian did a great job, don't get me wrong. I just believe that Kelly has a stronger resume. Of course, you could make an argument for Sumlin, Muschamp or Snyder. Even Morra or Urban if you wanted to. What BK did on this team, especially with a RS freshman qb and the injuries in the secondary, is just unbelievable.

The majority of analysts here and abroad thought we would drop 4-5 this year... Yet here we stand.

I would have voted Kelly COY, but O'Brien too just as easily. It's not just wins and losses guys.

Think about it: he got 4 BCS-conference wins with his players knowing that, immediately after the game, they would have to dress and shower in a room where an old, Penn State defensive coordinator had butt-sex with a little boy.

Heck, given that they could transfer without restriction, I'm a little surprised 22 people signed up to play.
