Personally, I see him playing a lot, just not being the guy yet, and probably not being that at least until his Sophmore year. This is how I see it shaking out by next fall:

Strong:
1a) Nicky Baratti*
1b) Elijah Shumate
3a) Chris Badger
3b) John Turner

Free:
1) Matthias Farley
2) Max Redfield
3) C.J. Prosise
4) Eliar Hardy (I think he should move to corner unless he packs on some pounds)

The fact that Matthias has come in with so little experience and played so well tells me he is going to continue to develop. Add to that 12 wins and a NC game under his belt, and I think its very likely that holds the starting spot, even against a freshman phenom. But remember, our defense rotates a ton and plays lots of situational guys, so MR will play, no doubt.

*to argue that we won't have an uber-athleteic, white safety getting significant PT is to not understand ND football. Those guys are drawn to SB like moths to a porch lamp.

Wasn't Collinsworth supposed to start at safety this year before he was injured?

Yes. Collinsworth will provide the veteran leadership in our secondary next year. Farley will likely continue to see lots of playing time as he'll have more starts than any of the other returning Safeties, and Shumate, as arguably the most athletic prospect, will probably see lots of the field as well (I'm guessing he'll still be our Nickelback).

Redfield could push his way into the rotation, much like Shumate has done this year, but I think Collinsworth, Farley and Shumate get the lion's share of the reps.

if he can shake the rust from being off a year...he will be solid...the kid has a nose for the ball and likes to hit

Wow! Forgot about him... but I'm not so sure he just automatically starts at this point. You have two really athletic sophmores with PT during our big run. I guess we'll have to see. Still I don't think he changes things for Redfield. Maybe something like this:

Strong:
1a) Austin Collinsworth
1b) Nicky Baratti

Free:
1) Matthias Farley
2) Max Redfield

Nickel:
1) Elijah Shumate
2) C.J. Prosise

Reserves
- Eliar Hardy
- Chris Badger
- John Turner

In any event, if we land MR, the position is looking strong!

Remember this is the same guy who said Oregon was the favorite, and continued to say it even after Redfield himself stated that Notre Dame led.

We are getting to the point where all of these kids are all good athletes, so we are going to be wating longer to see our recruits play. But Prosise will get on the field eventually.

Prosise will see the field - I am very confident about it. The staff is really, really high on him.

Yeah, Kelly said after Slaughter went down that Prosise might even play this year. Of course he didn't, and I certainly don't expect him to now, but it shows that he has definitely made an impression.

It sounds like Prosise is turning into a bigger, more physical guy than we expected (like Farley). He could play SS or DOG LB/nickelback as well. He will see the field somewhere.

Agree Prosise will see the field. The thing about having all these great athletes it's that you are able to rotate players in and keep them fresh.

I'm hearing from someone on campus that Redfield was at ND yesterday. I trust this person very much, FWIW.

Could we be recruiting Max as a WR?

Under the shows what we know column: Yes or something entirely different.

No one has discussed what happens if we get Jamoris back for a 6th year.

No one has taken into account that Danny Spond has switched to corner some in our nickle and all in our dime.

Last year we're ringing our hands hoping "this kid sticks" and "this kid commits". Now were yapping about a possible embarrasment od riches while we wait for Jan 7 to roll around. Does this feel good or what?

BTW......anyone else getting absolutely nothing done at work? lol
