Former Colorado Buffaloes coach blames racism for Jon Embree firing - ESPN

Wow. This is a PR nightmare. I dont know much about the school or program other than that they werent very good. Wasn't Embree a peculiar hire to begin with in that he had no head coaching experience?

I don't know about any racism, but it is kinda stupid to fire the guy after two years. He inherited a sh!tstorm of a program. CU isn't going anywhere fast, why not stick with Embree and see what happens?

Granted Colorado was bad this year but you got to give a coach more time to bring/develop his players and implement his program. I don't know about the race issue but you can't hire someone, hand him a five-year program only fire him before the half-way mark.

Illinois fans are dealing with the same division over Tim Beckman. People are calling for his head right now after his first season, and they do have some points. But I personally feel it does more damage to your program if you don't give a new coach three years than if you just fire him.

Unless, of course, the guy is just an outright disaster. Then you can him. But even regardless of how bad CU was this year, and yes, they were terrible, you'd think he would have another year or so to see what he can do. Like I said earlier, what does CU have to lose?

The way things are going black coaches are going to be even more of a rarity in the future. If I was an AD I wouldn't because if he sucked I wouldn't be able to fire him without being called a racist.

I watched a bit of a few of their conference games... honestly they may be the worst BCS conference team I have ever seen. And if race is the only thing that explains this how the hell do you explain Gene C. at Auburn two years after winning a title??

Sadly, I think stuff like this hurts black hires... if I am an AD and have two equal candidates, one white and one black, I am hiring the white guy... why? Because odds are at some point I will have to part ways with that coach (most coaches in NCAA get canned, very rarely do they becomes legends, retire and get statues) and why would I want to deal with the BS being thrown at my school, my self and my family in terms of racism when I could just hire an equally qualifed white guy and avoid it?

Mike Bohn is the problem. How many ADs get the opportunity to hire three different head football coaches? The only reason he hired Embree was because of the boosters pressuring him to hire a "CU Guy". So he hired the two guys that were for former players vying for the job. He paid Embree the smallest salary of any coach in the Pac12 and gave him no support. He is more palpable for the situation than Embree.

McCarthey is getting more press about the comments about racism, but that isn't the heart of his message. He was in every radio show that would have him today, speaking about how he interviewed for the job after Hawkins and explained to them what was wrong institutionally with the program. He offered to come back for a couple years to get things right so they could pass it down to a guy like Embree. He explained exactly what is happening today. Bohn didn't listened to him and deserves to be fired for it.

The whole program is a dumpster fire right now.

I think you're both right. We'll never know if Embree got fired because of his race or team, even if he did have a terrible team, but you can imagine that it'll creep into the minds of those making hires across the country. It may not be a huge factor, but I'd imagine it would at the very least subconsciously seep into AD's minds.

Same thing ND had to deal with when we fired Ty. Everyone who followed the program knew he needed to go, but all of a sudden it was a race issue.

Yeah definitely agree. A lot of times this is just a proxy for the real problems in the athletic department or university at large. From what you said, this appears to be the case. AD needs to go.

Went 4-21 over 2 seasons with losses to Sacramento State, Hawaii, and Fresno State (by 55 points!!!)... yeah....

What I will say is that if the administration promised him they would be patient and let him get his own players in place... then I can see the race angle. Otherwise, he got fired for performance plain and simple.

God. That whole situation sounds awful. I doubt "race" was the reason he was fired, but you've got to give a guy who comes in to a bare cupboard more than two years to fill it. Especially if it's his first time at the rodeo.
Gonna be very hard for them to get someone good now, either.

I had a black guy I work with tell me he would never pull for Notre Dame because of what they did to t.w. I tried to explain to him that t.w. was not getting the job done and why but no matter what I said it was not going to make a difference. It really hurt my feelings this went against my favorite school and really my church. He was a Baptist preacher so he might have some slant against Catholicism.

This is the thing ... when you have a guy after 2 years that you just know isn't going to turn it around, why keep him for his 3rd year? It doesn't make sense. You can either keep him for a 3rd year and fire him at the end of the year, which he, you, and everyone else knows is going to happen, or you can take care of it right now.

Everyone knew Embree was gone sooner or later. They chose to fire him after absolutely horrible production in 2 years. With the amount of talent that leaves that state, there has to be someone else there that can encourage kids to stay in Boulder. Embree wasn't the guy. The previous coach was there for three years.

Just b/c Hawkins was there for 5, doesn't mean every failed coach should get 5 years. I agree that the AD should shoulder most of the blame. But the rest of the program shouldn't have to suffer for the AD's bad decision-making by keeping the coach on for one more year.

Most of my friends and many of my in laws are black... some have gone there with Ty and Notre Dame in the past... I simply respond along the lines of:

well, I guess that's why you don't go out on a limb and become the first major school to hire a black man as your coach... if it's doesn't work out you are branded a racist...
OR
I simply say... did you ever wonder if race had to do with his firing then what earth explains his hiring???

either usually does trick...

I guess the lesson is... with some people,... white, black or otherwise, when race is at play, logic still tends to get left at the door.

I would guess for that to take until 2002 it would make some jump to conclusions, especially people who don't follow things closely. Just saying...
