Why do I feel like this is the kiss of death? Hope I am wrong and he is right.

How so? If he's played well enough to declare for the draft early, ND will likely have gotten 2-3 very good years out of him. Regardless, it's never a bad thing when an athlete understands the economics behind his ND degree and the NFL.

Whiskey...I am speaking more to the "how much I dominate" comment, certainly not to the logic you present. In that regard this kid already has it figured out which gives me a great feeling that he is an RKG. I just hope he dominates like he is projecting is all.

I'm sure everyone has seen his recruiting video, if not you need to take a look. I forsee him definityl being a dominant force on the D-line if he stays there. He moves like a DE but has the body of a DT, may be better off on the o-line, but love what he can do on the dline. He looks like Shaq playing against a pee-wee team, he is huge.

No doubt the kid has talent. I don't believe he would have been offered by ND if he didn't display the adequate skill set. Its also a giant leap from HS to the CFB level, no matter how much one has dominated. Also there is a wide spread of talent between regions and for that matter divisions/leagues within regions. I am not looking for Jarron to do poorly. I just get worried when I see this kind of self projection. Maybe I took it out of context, but there is a fine line between confidence and being a loud mouth. Personally, I prefer the guy that is quietly confident. That is all.

Believe me I would love for him and all of our recruits to turn into absolute beasts, dominate every game, and more importantly destroy USC every year so I don't have to listen to all the Trojan fans out here.

I didn't read his tweet that way, cali. In my view, there's a big difference between "I'm going to dominate and get offered huge amounts of guaranteed money..." and "even if I dominate and get offered huge amounts of guaranteed money..."

The former definitely implies some hubris and materialism that might be cause for concern (though with the level of athletes we're bringing in, self-confidence bordering on arrogance is probably unavoidabe.) The latter is a conditional statement intended to show how dedicated he is to getting his degree.

It's a very encouraging statement.

Love his quote. Great mindset.

And if I was rated by a couple groups as the second best DT in the nation coming out of high school, I would think that the nfl is a real possiblity but understand that there are no guarantees. He's seems to get it. Can't wait to see him in action.

I viewed Jarron's statement similarly to how Whiskey viewed it. Taken that way [and that's how the words actually project meaning in his sentence, so it's no stretch], this is a somewhat remarkable glance forward at his future possibilities. Not many youngsters even consider placing themselves in a future situation wherein they are actually weighing multiple variables. Good on you, young man.

Couldn't agree more. TBH I am really looking forward to the depth and havoc he and Day will provide this year to the line.

I think Whiskey Mike's is the way intended. But my question: Isn't this the kid that the recruiting services said wasn't so great after all?

I see Jones as a copy of Tuitt... big enough to play DT and be a run stuffer down the road, but athletic enough to play on the edge and make some OTs look stupid.

The amount of combinations for pass-rushing packages with KLM, Tuitt, Day, Jones, Ishaq, Kona and Shembo is astounding.

Example, you could play Williams and Shembo on the edge with KLM and Tuitt inside and still defend a surprise inside run pretty well. Or, you could keep Tuitt outside and bring in Kona to the middle and still have 4 above-average pass rushers.

And Kona reminds me of Jonathan Fanene, formerly of CIN but now with NE. Fanene could play DE or DT in base packages and be effective, but was CIN's leader in sacks because he was a tremendous "surprise" pass rusher from either position. I think Kona could be much the same for ND this year as Fanene was for the Bengals last year. Nix shuts down the middle on 1st and 2nd downs, and if Diaco wants to stay in a base package, send Kona out there for third down and let him get after the QB while still being a great option against the 3rd down run.

And now this post is all over the place. Sorry everyone.

I don't really see the Tuitt comparison in play or body type. Tuitt is more compact and explosive. Jones reminds me a of a bigger Justin Tuck in his lankiness. They both are all arms and legs.

The fact is we don't have anyone like Jones on our team right now. I am interested to see how Jones gets utilized. If he can stay lean and flexible, I bet he works his way into the rotation this year.

I'll second that. I'd really like to hear more about how his development is coming along. Since he's not playing during the season he's not in any team reports. Anybody have info?

Does anyone else see him splitting reps with Day at DE opposite Tuitt next year?
Depending on what happens with Hounshell, Jones is definitely in line to get into the rotation because Kap is leaving. It's pretty clear that Diaco & Co. are willing to play any defensive lineman who can physically compete. Springmann was largely an afterthought in the 2011 class and now he's playing major minutes, and making a lot of plays.

What is Schwenke's eligibility status?

I do because Tuitt is too special to leave the field all that often and JJ is too good not to get PT and if they want him to replace Tuitt after he goes pro he needs to get plenty of PT next season.

He's not even playing and he's all about keeping focused.

He will be.

The kid stuck out like a sore thumb walking back into the locker rooms in Norman the other night.

He has some really imposing size!

And he was fired up about the win!

Totally agree, he's going to be a stud. I think it's great that he's redshirting and still this focused and active. Going to be a great one.

I was at the game too and it was a special time. Mr. Jones was HUGE and I can't wait to see him on the field! I have loved this kid from day one. I think he'll be a really good one!

There is an update on II of some scout team players and they talk about jones a fair amount. Quotes from Zachary Martin talking about his potential. It really seems that this kid just needs to get the physicality of the game down and he could be really good. It's great we have the luxury of redshirting him.

What stood out to me was how the players were talking about how long his arms are and his reach. Something common to players BK seeks out.
