Why can't we rush the field?

In every home game I've gone to recently in the middle of the fourth quarter they announce that nobody under ANY circumstances should rush the field. In the last two minutes of a game they send all the ushers to guard the sidelines.

Why can't we rush the field? Rushing the field is one of the best things about college football.

It would have happened in 2005 (if we beat USC), but since then we haven't had a chance. If a similar game happens and we win, jail break!

Only other stadium I've been to is Wisconsin's, so I can't say this from experience, but I expect all stadiums announce that when appropriate.

It's Notre Dame. Who in the hell could we beat that would be that amazing? Underdogs rush the field when they do something unbelievable. I don't believe there's anyone we can't beat, so I would be a little embarrassed by that.

We rushed the field for Utah? I had no idea. No reason for that. If I remember right, they were ranked around #12. That's no where close to taking down a #1 team, which USC was in 2005.

Seniors go down on the field for their last home games every year. Utah was the last home game of 2010, so the ushers allowed the seniors to "rush" (really just carefully climb down the walls slowly) the field, and a bunch of underclassmen came over to the senior section and joined. It's not cause it was some huge win.

In the Utah game it was much more than beating #12. It was after a lot of off field stuff and we were in a very bad place, very depressed and almost hopeless. When ND blocked that punt and we felt hope...its was a huge moment. When we finally beat Utah there was so much excitement and enthusiasm, I can't blame anyone for rushing the field.

IDK. To me, rushing the field to anyone against anyone outside of the top #3 is embarrassing, especially Utah, unless there's some crazy circumstances like Teo going 99 yards for an INT return on the last play being down 5 to Michigan this week.

Basketball is getting really bad about rushing the court.

As far as the USC game in 05, they did rush the field only to be pushed into a corner and sob uncontrollably.

I thought they were ranked #17.

I think it happened because it was Senior Day and they had hadn't won that special day or something for a while. Connecticut and Syracuse were the previous two. Ouch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is against the NCAA rules to rush the field after a game. When it is done at other schools, the students just do it and the school pays the fine. Pretty sure it's that way for basketball as well.

It hasn't been done here since Utah because there has been nothing to rush the field for in a while.

Why can't we rush the field? Rushing the field is one of the best things about college football.

It's a Public Safety and Risk Analysis Issue.

In the early 80's a woman named Bearman, was knocked down by a running, inebriated student, outside the stadium after a game. She sustained a broken leg and she and her husband successfully sued ND. The case is considered significant and is a Risk Analysis case study. A cite for the case appears below.

She claimed she should be able to attend a game with a reasonable expectation of safety. ND claimed they done so but the courts held otherwise. As such ND reevaluated an expanded their safety measures. Under President Malloy this lead to a more stringent alcohol policies, no night games, stricter crowd control by ushers and campus police among others.

ND has never wanted the vomiting, fallen down drunk environment that is common at LSU home games (I've experienced it). The Bearman incident caused them to go further. Ten thousands exuberant fans may still rush the field and injuries may still occur but if they do ND will have acted prudently in the interest of Public Safety.

Every school does the same thing. That's what's cool about rushing the field, so many people that they overrun the security.

Utah was a big game. They were #5 before being beaten by TCU the week before and we had a losing record going into the game. We were struggling as a program and desperately needed a win. We got it on senior day. We then went on a 4 game winning streak to finish the season including beating USC for the first time in 8 years.

Rushing the field for Utah was one of the best experiences I had at ND. It may seem lame now but it was a big deal to beat them.

They say not to, but if the right scenario arose, there is no way they could possibly stop it. I agree that there are only rare occasions where it would be merited as well.

Not only is BGIF right on with the public safety part of it, but there is also the cost involved. It would definetely damage the field, people could sue over injuries, and if they pull down the goalpost they have to put it back up.

There are a lot of reasons they should tell the crowd not to rush the field, imo.

This, also why would a school want fans to rush the field? It is not condoned, it just happens. Plus you run the risk of the Utah situation and getting flagged because overly anxious fans.

Rushing the field should be reserved to either 1.) Knocking off the number 1 team or 2.) Knocking off a top 5 team if unranked.



My senior year in HS the football team ran the tables in the regular season, we rushed the field 3 times that year. 1st was beating the team picked to win the conference, 2nd was an OT win at another schools homecoming (only rushed because they were getting ready to, and 3rd was when we beat our rivals to win the conference outright.

First 2 were away games. hahahahahaha

Pretty sure OSU used to grease up their goal posts during the OSU/UM games so people couldn't climb them and tear them down when the students rushed the field. Things get crazy in that rivalry.

No, I disagree with alot of people about rushing the field

You rush the field if you have a dramatic win against a real rival (Not BC/Pit), that was not a game you should heavily win.

Imagine in a night where a ton of recruits were there, we beat USC in the last couple of minutes. Rushing the field would be a n unforgettable memory for alot of them (and for me >_>).

Just simply outlawing rushing the field at the beginning of the 4th quarter is just opposite to what ND is currently trying to do: improve the home atmosphere.

I think i can finally say this, but the standard has been raised at long last so that we dont rush the field for beating a Mountain West team (at the time). Maybe soon we can back to the "Golden Standard" of annual national title competiton not seen since the early 90s
