East Lansing -- Michigan State players call Spartan Stadium "The Woodshed."
It is where teams come to get beat and to get beaten up. They are highly protective of "The Woodshed."
Tonight, "The Woodshed" will be lit up for its second night game of the season when No. 20 Notre Dame visits Spartan Stadium for another highly anticipated clash between the two schools. The Michigan State-Notre Dame game is always a barometer for things to come.
The Spartans do not plan on losing this game. They never plan on losing in "The Woodshed."
Players vow to protect turf
The Spartans bring a 15-game home winning streak into the Notre Dame game. Their last home loss was during the final regular-season game — a 42-14 loss to Penn State — of a disappointing 2009 season. The Spartans finished 6-7 that season, lost at home to Central Michigan and ended the season with a 41-31 loss to Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. They were just 4-3 at Spartan Stadium.
The next season players made a vow to protect their home turf.
There have been close calls, but they have not lost in "The Woodshed" since.
"This is where we handle our business," receiver Bennie Fowler said. "We don't lose in 'The Woodshed.'"
There is a mind-set once Spartan players hit their turf. They are intense, excited and agitated. The Spartans are more aggressive in "The Woodshed," they say, in part because of the atmosphere, the crowd and the goal of winning every game they play.
"You got to be tough when you come into 'The Woodshed,'" defensive end William Gholston said.
So what message do players want to send opponents once they step inside Spartan Stadium?
"They got no chance," Fowler said. "We are not taking any prisoners and we are not showing any mercy. That's who we are as a team."
Since the 2009 season, the Spartans won on the "Little Giants" play to beat Notre Dame and a Hail Mary at the end to beat Wisconsin. But the bottom line is they've won eight Big Ten games and beaten five ranked opponents at home.
"We don't want to lose there," sophomore receiver Keith Mumphery said. "We take it personal. We definitely don't want to lose there."
Spartans seek revenge
The Spartans say they took the loss at Notre Dame last season personally. The Spartans were ranked 15th heading into the game, but were spanked 31-13. Revenge is on their minds.
"We did not come out ready to play," offensive guard Chris McDonald said. "This is my senior year and I really want to beat them. It (losing) does give you extra emotion and enthusiasm. It is going to be a great atmosphere and we are going to be ready to play."
Fowler agrees.
"It is a big game," he said. "Notre Dame got the win last year and we definitely want to come out and dominate. That's how I looked at it. They dominated us last year and we have to come back and dominate.
"They are coming to our house so we have to dominate."
