What we need, and what I hope Allen meant, is attitude. Mean guys. This is why I hated to see Aaron Lynch go.

I want a few late hit penalties. I want some showboating. We need a little bit of that.

Pinkett could've chosen his words better. This is almost as bad as Hornings "black athlete" comment a few years back. Imagine if a Theisman had said this.....

Well it made PTI. Wilbon actually said Notre Dame does it right. Yea he likes to bust Notre Dame but they are scholar/athletes and they graduate.

Ok then.

If he gets canned, can they get rid of Don Criqui with him? He's brutal.

Golson back to pass.... throws short and caught.... and he's gone. touchdown. touchdown to tyler eifert. what a play.

I like attitude as well, but you don't want any stupid penalties. When is there really ever a good time for a late hit penalty? Pretty much never. It's always when your team is up by 4 and the other team is facing a 3rd and 14. Hard hitting and attitude are great, but playing with no discipline will kill you. Just ask the Raiders.

I do find this whole discussion kind of baloney, honestly. Who is our best defensive player and hardest hitter on defense? A guy who probably never took a drink in his life. Plus, we had Clausen drinking and getting in a fight. Floyd's issues, etc. etc. And then you had Lynch who was apparently not really great for the team. So I'm not getting it. It's kind of fun to say, but I don't think it lines up with reality to be honest.

@hansenNDInsider: "The Notre Dame IMG Network is extremely disappointed in the comments made by Allen Pinkett in his radio interview. We completely disagree with those comments. As his employer, we will be determining disciplinary action to be taken."

@hansenNDInsider: And this from Pinkett himself, "In reviewing my remarks from a radio interview Wednesday, it's clear that I chose my words poorly and that an apology is in order for these inappropriate comments. My words do not reflect the strong pride and passion I have for the Notre Dame football program. "I understand that there may be consequences to my actions."

That's what happens when you fall into the mire of trash spewing sports journalism like ESPN.

Bring back Tony Roberts!

I respect Pinkett, and I understand what he's trying to say in a way (At least the part where we can't have a bunch of choir boys), but he definitely used the wrong vocabulary to get his idea across I think.

Poor choice of words. That being said I agree with the premise. You want some violent football players and some of those guys have a problem controlling that off the field. Some have no off the field issue. I would love to have a linebacker like Brandon Spikes again.

Oddly, I agree with him.

and to keep the odd train rolling I agree with you...wait what?

AP is awesome...he isn't some dumb guy that got hit in the head too many times...pretty sharp guy.

Sometimes people have an image in their head thats tough to communicate....criminal...naaa.

He means rebel, badass...

...Ricky Watters was that guy, I think Jeff Faine was that guy...I'm sure there were others...Carlo, oh hell yea.

FWIW, I lived up the hall from Faine for a couple of years. He may have been a tough guy on the field, but off it he was cool as can be. Great offensive lineman, but certainly no "criminal."

ok...fair enough...leave him off the list of bad boys...did some "dirty" stuff on the field that got him on my list though...

again, NO ONE IS INTENDING THE WORD CRIMINAL to be applied in its usual definition...it was a poor choice of words, but I am pretty sure thats not what AP meant. He tried to clarify...it was unfortunate...but the point he was making holds some truth.

In an interview ND head coach Bob Davie commented, "We need more thugs." He corrected his statement the next day to "more aggressive players".

Actually you need guys like Jeff Faine who defined the expression "playing with controlled fury".

Good point, bad choice of words... We do need an edge, we do need a bit of swag and bad boy, and we don't need a bunch of chior boys. Criminals however is a bad word.

Pinkett traveled with the team to Ireland, no word yet if he will still call the game. I bet that was an awkward plane ride.

BROLIC

This is the right word. It connotes a warrior like mentality. It has nothing to do with criminality; as criminality does with inteligence. Don't confuse and conflate issues here.

Criminals come in smart and stupid as well as all shades inbetween. What makes so many of them get caught is that it is such a stretch to accomplish what they want, especially if they are an impulsive individual, which many criminals are, and is very bad for a person you expect to contribute on a team. AL was quite impulsive, that is why I am willing to bet his team success will be quite limited without some real personal change. The same also goes for individuals with sociopathic or narcisistic tendencies.

On the other hand, brolic connotes the ability to use measured violence at will to thrive or survive. Individuals with true brolic can survive within the structure of a society with rules. So they make fine soldiers, citizens and scholars. We need more players with brolic. We had plenty of players that made great citizens and scholars over the last twenty years and they should be commended. But we needed more of the kind that would charge in against overwhelming odds and not quit until they were the last man standing.

Brolic. Use this word from now on Allen. As far as everyone else, Allen has appologized, leave him alone, at least he had brolic.

“I’ve always felt like, to have a successful team, you gotta have a few bad citizens on the team,” Pinkett told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. “I mean, that’s how Ohio State used to win all the time. They would have two or three guys that were criminals. That just adds to the chemistry of the team. I think Notre Dame is growing because maybe they have some guys that are doing something worthy of a suspension, which creates edge on the football team. You can’t have a football team full of choir boys. You get your butt kicked if you have a team full of choir boys. You gotta have a little bit of edge, but the coach has to be the dictator and ultimate ruler.”

“I don’t want any mass murders or rapists,” Pinkett said. “I want guys that maybe get caught drinking that are underage, or guys that maybe got arrested because they got in a fight at a bar, or guys that are willing to cuss in public and don’t mind the repercussions of it. That’s the type of criminal I’m talking about.”

“I absolutely meant that,” he said. “Chemistry is so important on a football team. You have to have a couple of bad guys that sorta teeter on that edge to add to the flavor of the guys that are going to always do right. … You look at the teams that have one in the past. They always have a couple of criminals.

I think it was this part that made it worse when he had the chance to clarify. He should have just said "you need wild men, crazy guys who have a screw loose. Not just choir boys." but to say guys who get in bar fights is stupid.

I think you all missed the big repercussion of AP's comments. It has all the EPSN haters head's spinning. One dude, I think on PTI but don't know his name, made the comment that he 'takes shots at ND because that's what I do', and then went on to back up ND on our standards, educations, citizens, etc. All because he was trying to disagree with ND by disagreeing with Pinkett, who represents ND. Wait, you mean in order for me to hate on ND, I actually have to stand up for ND? Ahhhhh, my head's going to explode. Oh the conundrum.

I'm finding this mildly amusing.
