What is the "uniform surprise"?

Looks like the top of a number 8 to me.

Use a photo editing program and run it through some color filters like black and white or change contrast/colors etc and you can see the designs.

Celtic shield would definitely be pretty awesome but right under the "IRISH" name should be the number right.

or a 2 or a 3 or maybe even a 9

I won't shoot you (not even with a spitball) but I will say that that helmet design, whoever brain-farted it, is a deluded hack without a jot of design talent. That has to be the most absurd and asinine "concept" I've ever seen. Hell, even when I was ingesting LSD, psilocybin, mescaline and peyote that would have come across as an ugly-*** piece of fecal matter.

Bum trip, man ...

Well dshans, I will admit openly that i have no jots of design talent. When Rocket mentioned that the helmet swatch could be an all white helmet with the dome design in gold I went to the old trusty EA sports team builder online and just uploaded a quick logo of the dome to a white helmet. So, in fact there was no design at all to tell the truth. It would take lsd and peyote to curb the imagination to see what it would actually appear as EA doesnt allow you to get creative with the colors and textures.

The backlash that would follow from changing the helmet would be immense.

Alabama, who I'm using as a comparison due to program traditions, following, and success, never changes their helmets.

No way they risk a backlash of that magnitude, what with the pitches for turf and a jumbotron just over the horizon.

Alabama used to wear white helmets prior to 1960, then did so sporadically in the 1960's, in 1983, and for road games in 1984.

I get your point though, but I don't think most Bama fans would be as upset as ND fans with the change.

I welcome the backlash. Smart idea IMO.

I'm all for attracting recruits and positive attention to the program. I can handle adding shamrocks. I can even stomach those disgusting things we wore against Maryland. But to switch the color away from Gold wrecks the symbolism of the golden dome and the domed tops of the helmets, the religious (marian) significance of the gold and blue, and honestly, its just a central part of our identity. I love alternate units. But some things simply cannot be improved.

Well said.

OMM is in that age group and gets treated with the respect he's earned and deserves.

Unlike Mike in 53 years you'll still deserve to be treated like a twit. It's not the age.

Personally, I like the way this uniform is looking by the swatches. And heres the thing, I could ****ing care less what color the helmet, pants, jersey are as long ND wins the game. Really, winning is what matters. Tradition hasn't done anything for us the past 25 years

"Traditions, traditions. Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as... as... as a fiddler on the roof!"

My apologies, NDdomer2, I was in a "mood." My inner teenager was yearning to be set free. Maybe it was male menopause. It could just be that it was past my bedtime and I was a bit cranky.

No harm, no foul. Trust me I knew it looked hideous and it lacks the real colors but it was the best I could do, which, admittedly, is not good enough.

I don't understand what is so bad about the helmet not being gold? Tradition is a great thing to have but I think we all know it is time for a little change, just some of us don't like change. It is just one game of a different helmet, no need to panic.

Notre Dame never disappoints with new jerseys. Im excited to see it tomorow

Because gold helmets are our identity. They make our uniforms unique and represent Our Lady. It's not spitting on tradition, it's spitting on our identity.

Gold helmets aren't a tradition. That's like saying having a football team, a basilica, and a golden dome are traditions.

Personally, I really don't even like the leprechaun logo. I much prefer the 'ND' monogram as a logo. I wish we would just leave the helmets (and the pants) alone, and if they want to do something with the jerseys once a year, fine.

But looking at the little "hint" they give us, we still are representing Our Lady because it looks like the golden dome will be on the helmet to me

^ This.

If it's a white helmet with some form of the Dome, really what's the difference---especially for one game?

Imagine taking someone who knows nothing about football or Notre Dame to the game:

"Ugh, the white helmets are terrible...we're supposed to wear gold helmets to represent the Dome on campus and Our Lady."

"But the Dome is on the helmet, still representing Our Lady."

"Yeah, well...it only counts if it's a plain gold helmet. A logo of the Dome doesn't honor anything."

"Why not?"

.....?

Who knows what the helmet will look like. Maybe it is just a gold helmet with a stripe through the middle. But if it is white with the dome in gold, I don't understand the outrage for one game.

I'm not saying anyone has to like it, heck I might not like it, but to be outraged? For one game? It's absurd.

From the swatch it looks like this. A brushed gold helmet, like last year's Shamrock Helmet, with white stripe collared on both sides by navy blue.

I just hope they don't slap a green leprechaun logo on a helmet with no green. Hopefully the leprechaun logos are on the shoulders or sleeves. Much like the Oregon "Puddles" jerseys with the old school duck from last year. The ones below.

I'm too lazy to research this, so can someone tell me why these pics are called "swatches"?

swatch |swäCH|
noun
a sample, esp. of fabric.
• a collection of such samples, esp. in the form of a book.
• a patch or area of a material or surface: the sunset had filled the sky with swatches of deep orange.

These are pictures of parts of the whole jersey... ie: a swatch.
