16. QB Tommy Rees: Returning starter last season, still fighting off competition for the job, but he is a tough competitor and fun to watch.
Columnist must not have eyes. Or is a UM/ Denard fan...

7. Bronko Nagurski Candidates: DE Karpon Lewis-Moore and LB Manti Te'o are on the watch list.
6. Outland Trophy Candidates: Center Braxton Cave and Tackle Zack Martin are on the watch list for 2012.
5. Mackey Award Candidates: TE Tyler Eifert is on the watch list for 2012.
4. Maxwell Award Candidates: RB Cierre Wood and TE Tyler Eifert are both on the watch list.

Yes... exactly why I like ND. We have players that could, potentially, maybe, be good this year. Wow.

Only a could I'd agree with- Tailgating and campus stuff mainly

1) campus
2) academics
3) tradition of coaches
4) uniforms
5) school spirit

Interesting factoid. I did a camp at the University of Michigan last summer and one of the professors teaching me used to work in the Admissions dept. specializing in athletic applications. He told us how schools make such exceptions for athletes and how UM is a great school but takes really dumb athletes. He told a story how during the Schembeckler years, Bo wanted a QB with a GPA of 1.7 and was raging mad he couldn't be admitted. Also said while interviewing a recruit he said he wanted to go to UM because "the football helmets look cool"

Thanks for the article Bob. This reminded me of a great ND tradition that I just heard about last year through a friend. I have been to at least one ND home game every year since 1990, but I never knew this tradition existed until last year. I also had the pleasure of witnessing it in person last year too. I will tell you that if you do witness it in person and the hair on your body does not stand on end, you must be dead! Here it is, "Trumpets Under The Dome":
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oBedPq96kr8?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oBedPq96kr8?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

You aren't alone, a lot of people don't know about this because of the timing of it. It is right after the band plays on the steps and before they march to the stadium. Most people go line up along the sidewalks to watch them march by and do not realize that the trumpeters go into the Main Building before marching to do this. One of my favorite gameday traditions though.

Yep, get to go to 2-3 games every year since I was, well born and last year was the first year we did the trumpets, one of the many treasures ( a hidden one to many) of Pre-game at ND, too many things to do.

So ****in pumped!

This. I didn't find out about the trumpets until 4 or 5 years ago, but it's become a gameday tradition for me now. It's amazing how many people show up for it now too, the Golden Dome has been getting pretty packed in recent years.

Top 5 for me:

1. Tradition and history. From the Dome, to the Basilica, to the Grotto, the monuments, you name it.
2. The House that Rockne built. Even before the stadium was expanded it gave me goodbumps.
3. The band...and because of that I'm a bit sad that they're pumping music through the loudspeakers now, but in some circumstances that stadium is just dead when it should not be, so it might be justified.
4. The past and current great players.
5. The games.

Honestly, in no order... it's

-the academics
-the tradition
-because I'm stubborn as all hell and they've just always been the school I support (This also explains the whole Cleveland Browns thing).
- the idea of one day wearing my Notre Dame National Championship gear all over Southern California and just smiling at haters as they pass... Or even better, wearing it when all the fellas (Every damn one of them an ND hater it seems) get together, and not saying a word about it.... seriously, this dream really keeps me going through all the loses to the likes of Syracuse and UCONN

:)

To be honest I really don't know why I still love this school and football team, I just can't quit her! It's really kind of strange to me how I can be so passionate about a football team for a school that I've never even been to. I guess I'll go with the mystique that draws me to it. Either way you look at it there is something that draws me in to feel as good as I do when they win and how gut wrenching it is in defeat.

My love for ND is by far the most irrational thing I have going in life... not even close... like you, a big win (Sun Bowl or beating SC two years ago) can make my whole damn month... a big loss (like any of these freakin Michigan loses) can make me not want to leave the house for a good week, even if they win the next game.

ND can bring a complete loss of persepctive like nothing else I know.

no persepctive at all...

Yeah it controls way too much of my life, but I'm ok with it because it will make it that much sweeter when they win another title. It's amazing to me the highs and lows of it all. To compare it to being a fan of anything else holds no relevance. To put it in perspective, I'd consider myself a huge Patriots fan and the Super Bowl loss was nothing compared to the Michigan loss or hell even the bowl loss. I can't explain my unhealthy obsession with ND football but I think that's really what I love about it!

As I type, I am anticipating the opening of the UND box office so I can purchase tickets for the ND Purdue game. Five of my buddies from all over the US have acknowledged my love for ND and will join me for the game.

That's awesome, hope you guys have a great time! My plan is to go next year for the Oklahoma game as my first ever ND game. So now that I'm aware of it save enough room for two so my wife and I can see the trumpets!

Being from Sweden, there is not really anything which would suggest why you would pick a certain team to root for. Growing up, my friends and family obviously never had any interest in college football so I guess I could've chosen any of the teams in the NCAA. But its not really i choice is it?

I got sucked in to Notre Dame football like a republican to occupational warfare. Dispite the Irish stinkin' it up since I became a loyal fan, the choice has made great sense to me. Here is my list:
5. Academics, kids are put on campus to play AND get a degree, sometimes that seems like an an anomali, and it should't be.
4. Tradition
3. The campus and stadium atmosphere
2. Uniforms
1. The fact that people that aren't Irish fans tune in religiously hoping to see ND lose, I love that, I love rooting for a team that almost every week draws the best from their competition, with rivals all over the country.

See you in Dublin Irish fans. Godspeed

Tradition...yes
Rivalries...I guess, but beyond SC and Navy, I don't feel there really is a true rivalry. And I don't want to hear about the Corn and Blew..... They deserve a dirt nap just like their beloved Bo.
Fight Song...Nothing more be said.
