Smith really needs to gain weight if he wants to start the opener. He checked in at 211

All the analyst at the Opening have been saying that Jaylon is probably the most athletic player out there in terms of his size and speed combo. Could take over the top linebacker position from Rueben Foster.

Top defensive performer at the Opening yesterday. Just another day at the office. Anzalone was #2 for LBs

So we have the #1 LB and overall defensive player and could have the #2 LB at this event? Sounds good to me. :)

What does this say about SPARQ numbers? People were giving Jaylon a hard time because of his SPARQ score, yet multiple people are saying he is the best player on the field... I would much rather have a player own the field than win the "SPARQ championship."

It says that pOSU fans are full of shiit. They had the most unseemly of comments to Alex. Time to bring that all together and Jaylons thread is as good as any. This is a rediculous class of linebackers, and OSU can have all the SPARQ winners they want! It all don't mean nuthing, till you are on the field, tired and backed up . . . and then you find it in you to let the hammer down!

All Fighting Irish fans and followers should send a big thank you out to Jaylon Smith. Committed early. Could have waited and been courted and wined and dined by every college football power. Instead committed to Notre Dame without a lot of fanfare, went to work, competed, showed he is one of the very best high school football players in the country and then went to work as a powerful recruiting force. Something very special may be happening. The building of a great Notre Dame defense. If you were an elite corner back would you like to play on the back line of a great defense and get a great education too?

Could not agree more. He also appears to be an incredibly good kid. Kelly is fulfilling his goal of recruiting tough gentlemen.

So what is Smith's record right now in recruiting? 2 for 2? (Rochelle and Anzalone)

Amen! Wish Gunner would have done the same last year. Trickle effect = difference between good and great classes.

Agreed and welcome to the board.

As everyone always say, great players want to play with great players. I feel like all too often, a program changing commitment, like say Manti Te'o, comes towards the end of the recruiting calendar and doesn't have a significant impact on that particular class. Jaylon certainly did us a huge favor by committing early enough that other top prospects, from Rochell to Mattingly to Deeb to now Anzalone, want to consider the program even more.

It not only says a lot about the school and the recruiting class, but when a prospect of that caliber commits that early, it shows other elite prospects that the coaching staff is for real, and that players with that much talent can thrive at a school like ND. Not to mention that it sets off a snowball effect where more elite prospects commit, so the attention paid by other top recruits is heightened even more. Love it.

Could be bumped to a Top 3 player in the Nation on 247 soon

Couple steps closer to taking the #1 spot....lehhhzgo!

I'll be impressed if ESPN jumps him up to that top tier/5star status after the weeks out.

I just asked Tom Liuginbil (sp) via twitter if Jaylon Smith would get a bump. He said that he definitely would and that he is neck and neck with Matthew Thomas.

Oh snap...But Mathew Thomas #18 overall and Jaylon is #20 overall and ESPN only has 7 5* prospects...so no 5* for him yet.

Nice post and very true. Jaylon's maturity and work ethic simply can't be overstated. It is so refreshing to see a young man as talented as he is, also possess the maturity, work ethic, and leadership skills that he has shown. Then when you look at this class as a whole you see all of those intangibles in each of these young men and you realize that they have what it takes to be great. Not only in football in any endeavor they pursue. Makes you proud to be Irish.
