RT @GentryEstes247: UGA announces that Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team.

Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell arrested Friday morning

Georgia sophomore tailback Isaiah Crowell remained in jail Friday morning after an arrest on three charges, including two felonies, according to Athens-Clarke County's online jail log.

Per the booking recap report, Crowell was arrested by Athens Clarke-County police and booked at 3:37 a.m. Friday. He is reportedly being charged with possession of a concealed weapon (a misdemeanor), having a weapon in a school zone (a felony) and an altered ID mark on the weapon (felony).

Crowell made $9,500 bond and was released from jail at 12:44 p.m. Friday, according to the Athens-Clarke County log.

The tailback was arrested around 2:20 a.m. when a car he was driving was stopped at a road block set up at the intersection of East Campus Road and Green Street on campus, according to Athens Clarke-County Police spokesperson Hilda Sorrow.

"He came through, and as officers talked with him, they smelled an odor of marijuana," Sorrow said. "So they got all the occupants out, did a consent search of the person and a consent search of the vehicle. No marijuana was found, but during the search of the vehicle a handgun was found under the driver's seat, and it was determined that gun had an altered serial number. So Crowell, who was the driver, was arrested and charged with the three charges."

FLDomer and I had a good conversation about this earlier today. This is kinda what I was talking about as Richt doesn't play around with this kind of stuff. Really is too bad because Crowell is extremely talented just that it's one problem after another with this kid. smh

Very talented kid, but football should be the last of his concerns right now. He's going down the wrong path, and doing so real quick. Hope he gets back on track.

If you want to smoke weed and not do yourself, and your body right then you deserve set backs to clear your head of what you really want in life... Now i funked up big time when i was a kid smoked all the weed etc.. So i can give advice on that..

Really hope the best for him..

Contrast that with Auburn. About 15 years ago ...

At Auburn, quarterback Jeff Burger was charged with plagiarism and the school's Academic Honesty Committee recommended a suspension. He subsequently got into a fracas at four o'clock one morning at a local fast-food restaurant and was charged with being drunk and carrying a concealed weapon.

The drunk charge was dropped, and Burger pleaded guilty to the weapons charge and paid a $50 fine plus $32 in court costs. The recommended suspension was rejected by Auburn's vice-president for academic affairs, Warren Brandt, who said, "It seems to me that Mr. Burger had really been punished by the extensive press coverage.... He's suffered enough."

Note Burger had the gun on his person not under a car seat. And as for plagiarism ... THIS IS AUBURN and Burger was a the starting QB and they were playing Texas next. (Auburn won as Burger had a career day)

In a more recent incident a couple of Auburn players were at a outdoor campus function (concert IIRC) and things got a little rowdy one of the football players fired a handgun into the air to "quiet things down". Campus police apprehended two players. They ended up not charging the shooter but his teammate - who brought the gun. Seems the teammate wasn't a starter.

Different schools, different attitudes.

I will disagree with you. Can't the players name, but he beat his girlfriend and is suspended for the 1st two games of this year. Richt has the 4 strikes and you are out program. I guess it is hard when you have over a 100 arrest in your tenure.

Roster attrition occurring at alarming rate for Georgia football | UGA sports blog

ATHENS – Georgia has agreed on a new five-year contract for football coach Mark Richt, so clearly the UGA administration is happy with the job he’s doing. But one thing the Bulldogs’ 12-year coach appears to struggle with is simply keeping his players around.

If reports are true that defensive stars Alec Ogletree and Bacarri Rambo are suspended for multiple games to start this season — UGA has yet to confirm or deny them — then it continues a trend of roster attrition that has occurred at an alarming rate the past few years.

Reviewing AJC archives over the past four years, these latest suspensions would bring to 28 the number of players who will not be playing for the Bulldogs at the beginning of the 2012 season who otherwise would be eligible.

Since January, the Bulldogs have lost 13 players to transfer, disciplinary punishment or inability to achieve academic eligibility. That number balloons to 19 including losses off of last year’s roster.

I like this idea: 2 years of free college followed by 2 years of very low paying (but free room and board) military service then 2 more years of free college. I believe thats the way they do it in South Korea.

TPI and BGIF, well my friends the proof is in the pudding. That article really opened my eyes. I didn't think it was to that extreme. Maybe I get biased reports in the news since I live in GA but I haven't seen any of this stuff. Either way my opinion was skewed and I kinda feel dumb for defending Richt. The funny thing is I can't stand their fans or their team so I'm not sure why I was defending him in the first place? Weird

If you look at Post #9 in this thread although it wasn't too clear, I was agreeing with you through my contrast with Auburn. I believe Richt is one for the stricter SEC coaches and UGA has a tougher drug policy. That being said I had forgotten how many arrests they've had until TPI brought it up. BTW, TPI is also an Atlanta guy. I live not far from SEC headquarters.

Why shouldn't it be?

If it is stupid, its just as dumb as yours.

Why should it be? There are tons of successful people that do not serve in the military. I do not need to learn how to act in the military. And it is also a choice to be in the military. Now if they ever did a draft and told me I had to go due to need or lack or numbers I would never complian. But to say we need kids to the military because some thug gets caught with a gun is ludacris. How does that fix anything?

Read the line about Zach Mettenberger on BGIF's list, and you'll know all you need about "standards" in the SEC.

Just for the record, UGA has one of the strictest drug policies in the nation. Andy Staples of SI.com discussed it in an article titled, “Georgia’s strict drug policy noble, but puts team at a disadvantage”. Here’s a quote:

“The Bulldogs' substance-abuse policy is a prime example of the no-good-deed-goes-unpunished world of major college sports. Georgia tries to do the right thing by creating one of the toughest anti-drug policies in the nation, but that policy makes the Bulldogs the butt of jokes and could cost the football team wins.”

Georgia's strict drug policy noble, but puts team at disadvantage - Andy Staples - SI.com

Also, UGA does NOT oversign recruits like other schools, particularly in the SEC West.

Georgia Mark Richt continues crusade against oversigning - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports

UGA ranks number 2 behind Vanderbilt in football graduation rate.

Of course...UGA is not winning the SEC either.

No doubt there are some runaway programs in the deep South, on par with Ohio State and Southern Cal. And big time college football is a runaway monster. It's axiomatic that you will find obnoxious college football fans everywhere in the US, from Hawaii to Georgia and..well...anywhere.

But those in the know acknowledge that Mark Richt is one of the better guys around. Check out their adoption of a little boy and girl from the Ukraine.

And how can you not at least give him a little credit for his back dives. Geez…

Besides, why are y’all hating on a program that owes so much to a good and dedicated Catholic – Vince Dooley? Educated by nuns no less in Mobile Alabama who always pray for the Irish (according to legend).

With the smell of weed the police have probable cause and it's fair game from there on out..... They don't need consent at that point....
