Boo f-ing hoo.Amazing Zahm made it this long - forever hated by everyone but themselves. Always wondered how Zahm escaped a sex change. I was in Hotel Flanner when they shut it down, have to admit they weren't wrong for shutting down Flanner and Grace. Too big and very easy to get away with "stuff". A/C was boss though for that two weeks out of the year you needed it.

It was probably built upon an old ancient cemetery leaving Zahm afflicted with this super natural aura that permeates throughout. Those that live there accept it. Those that don't are frightened by it.

Not to necro this thread, but the random closure of Zahm Hall is such a great example of why the dorm system is such a joke. Students have no control over where they're placed, how the dorm is run, or in the culture. And then when one dorm develops a distinctive culture it gets shut down. Huh? And (with exceptions for kids getting pulled into sibling dorms or rich girls going to Ryan) we all know dorm placement is random - there's no rush process, so there's no real way a specific "type" could be pulled into any dorm, there's no way it got that crazy in the way a fraternity consistently bidding maniac coke heads for a decade could get.

I was in a South Quad dorm with no culture or identity whatsoever, so I have no dog in this fight beyond already rolling my eyes at all the talk of dorm culture and "identity." How can you even have a lasting identification with a dorm when it can be wiped out with a snap of the Dome's fingers.

I lived in Zahm for three years. Senior year off campus. I’m class of 1992, and Zahm had no such reputation when I was there. Someone in the know told me that apparently recent residents of Zahm were slipping date-rape drugs into drinks, etc…. TIFWIW.

I don't think it was that a distinctive 'type' somehow ended up in Zahm. Supposedly some of the students there, I'm sure a very small number, were involved in bad behavior over a period of time. I doubt it was much worse than other dorms, but I don't know and I've heard mixed things about that. Hopefully they reopen it soon.

Sounds like they need to work on their traits. For the record Holy Cross Hall was closed because it was 100 years old and a fire trap, not because we weren’t RKG’s! Go Hogs!
My dad was a Hog lol

Much more recent class than '92 and I just...have a hard time believing that. Like dude "slipping date-rape drugs" into drinks is so multi-step diabolical. Like you have to (1) get bitcoin (2) buy drugs off the dark net (3) get them delivered to South Bend (4) convert them into a form you can put in a drink (5) identify a girl who isn't watching her drink. Like I just...it smells like a "fentanyl in halloween candy" type story. I don't know obviously I don't have any personal knowledge here but I have a really hard time believing that as opposed to some combination of (1) people got stupid drunk off jungle juice and forgot what sweet liquor can do to you (2) zahm got pretty rowdy (3) zahm thumbed their nose at admin too often.

Trying to figure out which South Quad dorm has no culture/identity. Shame if true, wasn't the case when I was there (later than '92, earlier than now).

Maybe don't think on it too hard or you'll dox me. Looking at the nd dorm website and, lol, a couple new ones have popped up since my (ever-more removed) departure from campus. Saw this tidbit for the newest which made me laugh

"Baumer Hall is the newest men's hall in the Notre Dame residential life community, completed in Summer 2019. This $20 million facility is the result of a generous gift from University of Notre Dame alumnus John Baumer and his wife, Mollie"

Can you imagine if that $20,000,000 had gone to either an NIL deal split between Nolan Smith and Kayvon Thibodeaux (two top ranked 2019 recruits) or, shoot, an endowed professorship in (say) theoretical physics? Ugh
