Granderson fan due to his class and the way he helps out the community he's playing in. Miss him in Detroit, as a person. On the bright side, this may allow him to not be in the top 5 for strikeouts.

Mark Teixeira out of WBC because of wrist injury - ESPN New York

Another day, another injury for the New York Yankees.

Slugger Mark Teixeira will miss at least two weeks after injuring his right wrist swinging in the batting cage.

The injury has forced Teixeira to pull out of the World Baseball Classic.

NY first base replacements are Juan Rivera, Dan Johnson, and Youk when he's not playing third base for ARod.

Mariano Rivera of New York Yankees to retire after this season, sources say - ESPN New York

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera is expected to announce Saturday that he will retire after the season, according to sources.
The announcement will come at 10 a.m. ET from the Yankees' spring training camp in Tampa, Fla. Rivera, who is coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee, then will pitch against the Atlanta Braves. It will be Rivera's first appearance this spring.
The New York Post initially reported Rivera's decision.
Considered the greatest closer in baseball history, Rivera, 43, will retire as the all-time saves leader. He enters the 2013 season with 608 saves, seven more than Trevor Hoffman's career total.
Rivera's 42 postseason saves are nine more than the combined total of the next two on the list, Brad Lidge and Dennis Eckersley. Rivera has won five World Series rings with the Yankees, his only big league employer.

With eight men out, where will the home runs come from? - CBSSports.com

By Danny Knobler
March 6

The Yankees had 10 players hit double-digit homers last year, 10 players who combined for 227 of their 245 homers. Now, with the news that Mark Teixeira will be out for 8-10 weeks, they know for sure that eight of those 10 won't be in the opening day lineup.
And Derek Jeter still has to be listed as iffy. Of those 10, only Robinson Cano is a sure thing.
Eight men out, and who's in to replace them?

Yankee home runs, 2012

*Curtis Granderson, 43
Robinson Cano, 33
*Mark Teixeira, 24
*Nick Swisher, 24
*Russell Martin, 21
*Raul Ibanez, 19
*Alex Rodriguez, 18
*Eric Chavez, 16
Derek Jeter, 15
*Andruw Jones, 14

*won't be in 2013 opening day lineup

What's wrong with Jones... He's playing in the WBC right now...

Edit... Never mind, he doesn't play for New York anymore...

This isn't a terrible move. When Granderson comes back Wells will fit nicely into the DH role against left handers.

ARod and Tex making more than or close to double Granderson should be enough to get someone fired...

Only thing that even begins to help the Yanks is that the WBC is paying Tex's salary for the time he is on the DL. Probably will work out to 8 million.

Are they going to pay for the whole season if surgery is required?

For what NY will pay Youk and Wells they could have keep those who chose free agency.

Not sure if there is a cut-off, but I know the WBC is tipping the bill for Tex and Hanley Ramirez to start the year because of their injuries suffered at the WBC.

Not sure if you saw the NY Daily News article, but due to some interesting baseball accounting rules, Wells will actually HELP them stay under the $189 next year but counting as a $2 million dollar CREDIT against their payroll.

Phil Hughes to start season on DL
Updated: March 27, 2013, 5:47 PM ET
By Wallace Matthews | ESPNNewYork.com

The Yankees will add starter Phil Hughes to an already star-studded group that will open the season on the DL, including Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson.

Although the move was expected -- Hughes lost two weeks of spring training back in February with pain in his upper back from a bulging disk -- manager Joe Girardi made it official after the right-hander threw a minor-league game at the team's developmental complex Wednesday.

Girardi said Hughes will not accompany the team to New York but will be left behind for extended spring training, which begins here Monday. Although his DL stint will be backdated to March 22, allowing the Yankees to activate him as early as April 6, the target date for Hughes' first major league start is April 11.
