Yeah that happened, but I don't remember which game. He broke his collar bone on it too I believe.

Most of the Michigan games from 06-11 are kind of this blurred nightmare revolving around a cluster of bad calls, horrible pass interference's, and Denard f-ing Robinson.

And Tate freaking Forcier.... God those were forgettable times.

You mean this RB?

foot+on+the+line.jpg

He was out.

How about that screw job on Stanford when they were clearly in the endzone vs ND?

From my perspective, the penumbra of the emanation of his leather upper overhung the sideline stripe, but the sole itself was completely in the field. TD.

Just so insane. Like seriously... it even gets booed AT STANFORD. Big East calls it a TD, it's a TD, there is no evidence that it's not a TD.... and PAC 10 refs overturn it in the booth. SMH.

Worst Officiated Game - "The 5th Down Game" CU v Mizzou

Runner up - "Bush Push Game" ND v USC

Worst Single Call Ever - "Phantom Clip" On Rocket in ND v CU game

If you set up a formula that multiplies the horrificness of the call X the importance of the call, that would have to be it in my memory.

Of course, some older guys might want to raise the screwed up call in the 1964 USC game; I've heard guys swear that was a crap call and it cost the Irish another national title.....

"The second half proved to be as dramatic a 30 minutes of football as has ever been played. Southern California took the second half kickoff and marched 66 yards to its first score of the game. Halfback Mike Garrett went the final yard to cut the Irish lead to 17-7.

"The Notre Dame offense picked right up where it had left off before intermission, driving inside the Trojans 10-yard line. But as Huarte was looking to make an option pitch to Wolski, USC linebacker Ed Blecksmith knocked the ball loose. John Lockwood recovered to end the Irish scoring threat.

"After a USC punt, the Irish marched down the field again. A 12-play drive consumed the final five minutes of the third quarter, with the Irish inside the USC five as the fourth quarter began.

"Quickly, Notre Dame was inside the USC one-yard line and poised to regain a three-score lead. On second and goal, fullback Joe Kantor plunged for what appeared to be an Irish touchdown.

"But after the play had ended, an official threw his penalty flag high into the air and called holding on Notre Dame left tackle Bob Meeker. The officials had taken six points off the scoreboard for the Irish.

"A review of the game film shows that Meeker completely missed his blocking assignment on the play and had fallen straight to the ground. The flag stunned Parseghian and his players and changed the momentum of the game."

In a DVD I have of the history of the "Ara" era, the players say that on the goalline they would literally not use their hands so that they would never get a holding call. They'd hold their arms in an X over their chests. I can't remember if the film shows that, I can't find anything from the game on youtube.

That's interesting. I think the referee must have been a Mason.

Those sort of calls just stay with you. We had one in a game against PSU in '83 that was so bad that some of the PSU fans booed it and even Paterno admitted it was a bad call. We got our butts kicked for 3 quarters and trailed 34-7 in the 4th, but scored 3 td's to make it 34-28. With 8 seconds left we threw a td into the back of the endzone for the apparent win. The guy caught it cleanly, had it tucked into his body, and came down inbounds, yet the ref ruled it incomplete.

1983 Alabama vs Penn State: "Bama Robbed" - YouTube

The kicker is one of the officials was a former PSU player and had a nephew who was on the team that season. Several other teams had complained about that crew's obvious bias in favor of PSU. SI did an article the following week about how bad it was and the problem with refs calling a game for their former school. Weird thing is that they did call offsides on PSU that play and the former player isn't the one who made the bad call on the td. I still don't know if that crew was biased or just made an inexplicable call that was obviously wrong.

That's so interesting. I think the biggest flaw with collegiate officiating are the conflicts of interest. Why not go to national NCAA refs and make sure no ref works a game where they have a COI? Just seems like such an easy fix. I've heard many a Big Ten fan complain that a really large percentage of refs live in Michigan and they get some ridiculous calls in their favor on the regular.

I completely agree. No ref should be calling a game at this level where he has a COI. There's enough money in the game to make flying in neutral crews from anywhere in the country a non-issue.

The SEC wants only southern guys as refs because northern refs lack sufficient speed.

2009 NFCCG Saints/Vikings. It was blatantly obvious to everyone except the refs the Saints were purposely late hitting Favre to injure him and I recall maybe 1 flag for roughing the passer. No one needed to tell me about "Bountygate" for me to know something was rotten in New Orleans after watching that game and the Saints game the week previously against Arizona where they did successfully knock Warner out of the game.

Seattle-Green Bay 2012. Tate did not.... did not... come close to catching that ball. I feel bad for the replacement refs though so I wont hold it against them.

A3pG5jACUAARyWK.jpg:large

Want the short or long version? You know you are getting the long anyway, but if you need a summary, then here it goes.

The short version: Golden Tate had the first control of the ball, catching it with his left hand, which never loses control of the ball throughout the entire process of the play. His two feet hit the ground to establish possession before M.D. Jennings establishes possession. Tate’s butt hits the ground, and at this point, he still has control, possession and is in the end zone for a good touchdown. Tate pushed off for an uncalled offensive pass interference that would have ended the game, but this is irrelevant when history shows no referee in football will make such a call on a Hail Mary. Seattle’s win is legit.

The long version will now go through the whole catch, and the key is to look at a frame-by-frame analysis.

While slow-motion replays are sexier for TV, you have to take a frame-by-frame approach to get evidence of what really happens. No matter how many replays you watch from whatever angles you find, it is the exact frames at the key moments that will tell you what really happened, and why this is a touchdown.
Shame on the Angry Mob: Golden Tate’s Touchdown Was Legit

LOL! We're probably no happier with our refs than anybody else. A couple of years ago, the SEC's refs had a particularly bad season where it seemed they got more calls wrong than right. Almost every game had several bad calls against both teams. It's a tough job.

It was at Michigan in 2009 on their awful ring of concrete by the stands. I don't remember them being in consecutive weeks but it looks like they were.

Thanks...I thought they were close together...both on really tough catches...

Forgot all about that. I was there that night too. Horrid call and it only got worse the more I watched replays.

I think this thread should be about specific calls that COST your team a Win, period, not a call that MIGHT have cost you a win.

Denkinger DEFINITELY cost the Cardinals the WS in 1985.

The infield fly game still was a play in game and the Braves COST themselves just like they did the year before with poor play down the stretch.

And yes I am a Cardinals fan, but that still does not mean I don't know that the call benefited STL greatly, but it only cost the Braves a CHANCE at the win, not the game itself.
