What exactly have we been hearing?

People on twitter(Jason Sapp, Steve Wiltfong) have been saying that Golson has looked really impressive with his throws. Said that he puts good touch on his fade routes, which is something that we dont have right now

The big question is, "Who has the better grasp of Kelly's playbook?"

Since I haven't been to any of the practices, I'll have to defer the answer to that question to Kelly and his staff.

Everything is just speculation. It's gonna be a long off season and things happen. Coach Kelly will let us know next year.

Two really frustrating things to see on this thread and lots of others:

1) the trashing of Rees. please, stop. seeing a fan base trash one of their own in this way just makes me sick. most of us agree, he is very limited. he played very well in several games and played terribly in others, we get it. just stop with the venom. if he starts next year it's because kelly thinks he gives the team a better chance to win then the others - i personally hope that golson wins the job, but if not i'm certain there is a reason behind the outcome. which brings me to the 2nd point...

2) the questioning of kelly. if there's one thing that brian kelly has proven, it's that he knows how to evaluate, work with and develop quarterbacks. there is nothing he could have done this year to please everyone. he had 4 qb's, and none of them were great options. maybe he could have made some different decisions that would have worked out better for the team, maybe not. but despite everyone's extreme confidence in their own capacity to evaluate quarterbacks, i think i'll take kelly's evaluation over all of yours.

I will be happy with either Golson or Hendrix. Kelly needs to pick one of them to be the starter after the spring practices and go with him. Dont wait until the week before season to make a decision. I dont want to hear the bs of well this or that one doesnt have a grasp of the playbook. After a year in the system you should have it down or you have no business being a QB.

Ok. This is certainly good news. But, last I heard, Kelly was concerned about Golson's ability to keep the ball off of the turf when running. Now, that was after the Spring Game, so he's had an entire season to work on it. But it really doesn't matter if they are impressed with how well he throws the ball. In and of itself, the throws are really just one aspect of playing QB. In Kelly's offense, the QB calls the blocking schemes, NOT an O-Lineman. The QB also has more than one option, with the play call from the sideline. Well, maybe not EVERY play call, but most of them have a run or pass option. Which one is actually run is dependent on the defensive front. Kelly demands a lot of his QBs. It would be great if Golson and his athleticism are ready to go, come September. But I'm a guy who doesn't get too fired up about what bloggers and sportswriters are saying. I listen to the coaches' pressers. They are the ones with the real eye for the little things that make a HUGE difference.

Every point you made is the reason why I am so baffled by Rees' decision on 1st and 20 deep in FSU territory when Rees threw the pick at the end of the game. It was a basic safety read, which determined whether Rees was going to go over the top with a pass to Goodman, or underneath to Eifert or Toma. Rees has made that read countless times in meetings, practices and games. Did Rees make the wrong read, or did he ignore it and force the ball trying to make the heroic TD pass to win the game? Kelly better get to the bottom of this, and figure out what went wrong, because that kind of mistake cannot be repeated in his 3rd year by any QB in my opinion. If that means Kelly simplifies his offense, and makes it less QB-centric, I'd rather see that than go through another year of destructive QB mistakes by whomever is the guy.

Agree 100% about the trashing of one of our own, it needs to stop. As far as questioning Kelly, I don't because I know more, I do because I know less. Internet stupidity, or maybe MMQ stupidity. :)

I dont think the fan base is trashing Rees the person, rather the problem is ineffectiveness. It could very well be that if the O line can actually pass block,Rees would be alot more effective.Case in point were two huge sacks that occured as ND was driving. The O line even has trouble with a 3 man front and picking up the blitzer.

I know you guys all love golson, and i'd love to see him light it up too....but

can he be effective at 6'0 180lbs?? (which im telling you is a generous listing because when he walked past me i'd hesitate to put him at 5'10.5 175lbs)

Is he just too pygmy? I honestly think by default we need to go with hendrix and maybe see what the kid can do at CB

Drew Brees, Michael Vick, and Denard disagree

Drew Brees wasn't expected to run the ball 10-15 times a game, and certainly you aren't comparing Golson to Vick and Robinson? They could get away with being somewhat small-ish, because you couldn't get a good shot in on them. Hell, it was a 50-50 chance of you getting ANY kind of shot on them. Asking if Golson is big enough to start is a valid question.

If they thought he was too small then they wouldnt have ofered him a scholarship

That's ridiculous. They could have envisioned him moving to another position, or they might have assumed that he would put on more muscle mass than he has. Like I said........asking the question is valid. It's not an obvious answer. To just blatantly say he is too small would be wrong, but starting a discussion about whether or not he is big enough isn't egregious at all.

It's absolutely a valid question, but the poster I was responding to was advocating a position change based purely on his size. None of us know if he has enough muscle and endurance to handle a big hit while he is running the ball. We also know pretty much nothing about his accuracy when he's under pressure by college defenders. But from everything we have at our disposal, he seems to be a true dual-threat, which could be very exciting in the coming years.

I think you do have a valid point but I dont know what would make him not big enough to be quarterback. There are just too many "undersized" quarterbacks that have a lot of success in college and in the NFL.

Drew brees and kellen moore are two of the most accurate passers ever in the NFL and NCAA respectively. They also are not asked to run.

Vick may be small but i doubt he's the same size as the man i stood next to.

Im just saying the guy is VERY small, possibly too small to do the things that will be asked of him.
After all we got him by default from NC...i dont think he was promised anything and therefore you guys shouldnt be anointing anyone.

That being said I'd love to see him kill it next year.

Believe me, I'm not anointing anyone. In fact, I think next year will be painful as far as QB goes. Kelly will probably start his boy Rees, and even if he doesn't, it'll be effectively the first season for either Hendrix or Golson. We can't expect them to be great right away.

Most of those guys fall into one of two categories:

1. They are not asked to run the ball. If Kelly starts Golson (or Hendrix), I fully expect to see at least 10, but probably not more than 15, QB runs per game. That's 15-20 hits that the starter is going to endure, each and every week. In a traditional pro style offense, the QB gets hit solidly maybe 4 or 5 times a game? There's a big difference there.

2. Guys who are so damn fast/quick, that defenders rarely get a clean shot at them. See Denard Robinson, Michael Vick, Tony Rice, et al. These guys can get away with being undersized because they may take the same amount of hits as other runners, but they are the same type of hits. Golson might well fall into this category, but there's no way to know, yet.

I don't know Kellen's stats, but Drew did run in college, although not a lot. In his senior year he had about 80 rushes and about 500 yards rushing.
Holtz said that a QBwho takes 10 to 15 hits a game will not be a good passer. I think that is true except for a freak of nature who comes along once every ten years.
But in college the QB must run some; in the pros, not so much.

This is why the battle for No. 2 will be almost as interesting as the battle for No. 1.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rees starts next year. Kelly's been stubborn about him starting throughout the year, and he can always pull out the "he's a winner, he's 12-4" card. Until the number on the right steadily increases when we're not playing service academies or sub .500 teams.

I follow Boise very closely...they are 1B (ND is, of course, 1A). Kellen Moore was not, is not, never will be a runner. There were times when he could have run the ball, or at least it looked like he had a huge window and he would not. He's slow.

Difference between Moore and Tommy is that Moore gets through progressions quickly (always has--freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior years) and gets the balls to the receivers before they even break. The receivers would turnaround and the ball was on them. Tommy, on the other hand, locks on and throws late, rarely were receivers hit in stride and, obviously, he would stare at Floyd for three seconds and then chuck it to Eiffert if it wasn't remotely possible to throw to Floyd. Moore spread the ball around--it wasn't unusual to have hime complete passes to seven different receivers. That's the difference between the two.
