I don't care for the Cardinals
It's the right call... Regardless of team... You can't trip up the runner there and get away with it... Intent or not
Wow. Never saw anything like that before
that wasnt the right call craig pushed middlebrooks down
bull **** rule...how the **** can you win in that situation...all the base runner had to do is step on the infielder and it's automatic obstruction...dumb *** rule.
although very dumb *** by saltalamacchia to throw that ball
Didn't learn his lesson from the other night.
I don't know the right call. Would have to look at the rule. It sure didn't seem like the fielder tried to block him. It was in the context of trying to field the ball.
But, well...I don't know.
Heck of a finish.
i've always thought obstruction is stupid rule....for instance if a base runner runs into a fielder going for the ball by simply running to a base...i don't like that call, but it is what it is.
this series is close to over with the way the sox are hitting the ball anyway...sooooo many guys left on base and the top of our order has been horrendous
My biggest issue is that it seemed like Middlebrooks was raising his legs to get them out of the basepath, but Craig was running way inside the normal basepath, so it ended up tripping him. I just don't see how you can end the game on a call like that, unless it is really egregious like Middlebrooks reached out and grabbed his leg or something.
I am just very sad. And Salty better not see playing time for the rest of this series.
They just read the rule on ESPN. If Middlebrooks was attempting to field the ball, hit or thrown it would not have been obstruction. But when he is no longer fielding the ball it is.
He missed the catcher's wide throw and went the ball went past him he was no longer trying to field the ball. Doesn't matter whether it was intentional, or not, or if he tried to get out of the way.
The 3rd base umpire quickly made the call. No hesitation. The home plate umpire agreed.
In the post game panel interview with the umpires, they pointed out it was a standard call. The unusual part was that it ended a game.
Yeah I understand that calling obstruction there is, by rule, the correct call. My problem I suppose is with the wording of the rule. What is the expectation for Middlebrooks there? He somehow magically make himself disappear? He would not have been able to get up fast enough to get out of Craig's way. He pushes himself up to his knees to get up - obstruction. He lays down and tries to get his legs out of the normal basepath - obstruction. Just a horribly constructed rule, that will in all likelihood be edited due to this debacle.
But shame on Saltalamacchia for even putting Middlebrooks in this position. The Sox had Uehara on the mound and Kozma was coming up. Those ingredients would seem to add up to out number three and extras to me!
