Not sure I've seen an empty backfield formation that gets me excited at ND until now. Really curious to see this develop with Aneyas and Nolan out wide

Same re: lack of excitement. It's going to take me a minute to get used to the idea that if Carr is alone back there it's probably because he's read the defense and determined he doesn't need the extra protection. Otherwise he'll motion the RB over. If he's as sharp between the ears as everyone is saying, that's a heck of an advantage in the college game.

Playing 2 TEs basically the whole second half kept the slot off the field obviously, but it certainly helped get the run game going and kept 3 LBs on the field for Wisc. I think we gotta give him more than 1 half before we give up on him. He hasnt played meaningful snaps for almost a year.

My assumption was the Wisconsin defense was going to be better than most of this fanbase realized. They were in the first half.

Felt like ND was in control the entire way. First drive of the second half was critical. They did the job. Offense had no turnovers, defense and special teams each had a takeaway. Both led to touchdowns. Major difference in the game IMO.

Fwiw, last year Carr threw a pick on a checkdown to Price. This game he hit it both times. Little signs his game is maturing

I think people hoped/assumed the CFP was a sign of things to come and that his production would continue to go up with a better passer like Carr.

That one was brutal. Led to ND down at the half instead of up 3 with the ball after halftime.

I guess we'll see. He didn't get a lot of snaps in this game as Denbrock believed it was best to maintain 12 personnel to assist with blocking. It was obvious they didn't trust the OL in the first half and that doesn't give enough time for someone like Greathouse to use his best attributes.

I think the next 4-5 games will give us a better indication of how they intend to use him. I think there'll be more downfield shots as they develop that part of the playbook. Denbrock can't do everything in the first game and he has to respond to what he's seeing on the field.

Greathouse got twice the snap count to Graham and showed basically nothing. Is what it is, these guys will sink or swim here in the early part of the season. If he's not going to compete with Gilbert at boundary then it's hard to see him continuing to hold off Graham when Graham is clearly more athletic and a bigger playmaker.

SP+ had us at 99%+ win probability and adjusted margin of 25.6 points, so yes Wisconsin *did* get beat as bad as the scoreboard showed.

Because the Greathouse “truthers” tend to purposely misrepresent the argument and the past to try to make a point. There are plenty of opinions on Greathouse that don’t include you guys want him to be WR1 when he’s done nothing on the spectrum of takes.

The reason I always describe it as a Carr - Greathouse thing and not just a Greathouse thing is he objectively contributed, just contributed, more than nothing, in many games of his first two years with two different QBs. So there is something there either between the two or Carr and the slot position in general. And we do know Carr does not like throwing short over the middle of the field unless it’s C0. If it’s not Greathouse then fine, get Frazier or Graham in there, but the solution to a full passing game isn’t just ignore 1/3 or the WRs.

Agree with this. I find it hard to believe that Greathouse suddenly forgot how to play WR when Carr became QB after being one of the most consistent pass catchers on the team in the years prior. I don't think it can just be chalked up to a setback with his injury, because he was largely ignored by Carr in the games before his injury as well. I'm not sure what it is, but it's strange.

It just seems like Faison and Greathouse are mis-positioned. Faison in the slot seems like a no brainer.

I think Greathouse is going to be a fine receiver this year if he stays healthy and I am not taking 1 game as a microcosm of the season I am still expecting 25-30 catches in the regular season provided he stays healthy (big if, I know). My biggest beef with him is he WHIFFED hard on a screen that would have cut (I think) Mylan Graham loose for a big gain instead of a forced drop.

Absolutely. That TE in the flat RPO was there if Greathouse blocks.

My point to Eville is it is insanely hard to judge speed on a screen play where the defense is there that fast.

This is why I thought he was losing PT last season. He’s always been a horrific blocker

Faison could definitely play the slot but IMO part of it is Carr is very comfortable throwing to the wide side of the field.

Some of the NFL Draft folks have remarked that he prefers half field reads.

Just want to give a very high level thought - despite their struggles of late, Wisconsin has mucked it up for great teams repeatedly over the past few seasons. They scared Oregon twice and suffocated IU's run game last year. They are a functioning offense away from being a top 20 team. With the way Michigan looked on Saturday, I could see Wisconsin being a fringe top 5 Big Ten team at year's end. Fickell and Dressel are still great defensive minds.

I think they beat USC this year. They blew a 21-10 lead on the road in 2024. They beat Illinois last season as well. I think Wiscy will be better this year than people think and we'll look back in amazement that ND beat them as badly as they did in essentially 2 quarters of ball.
