Let me rephrase that. The fan base would be all over it. The institution absolutely cannot afford another black eye.

Honestly, I don't think they will get a big name/top tier head coach without baggage. Nor do they want a long-time assistant with no experience as a head coach. Coaches with an established reputation can pick and choose their next coaching position to ensure their success. They won't be going to a school that needs to rebuild their program. They want a team loaded with talent that's ready to win right now. Michigan is not that team.

Michigan needs someone who can rebuild the program, a good tier-two head coach with a proven track record who can repeat that success by recruiting and developing talent over a three to five year period at a tier one level.

If they are serious about restoring their reputation, they will need someone prepared to clean house. Someone like Navy's head coach, Ken Niumatalolo, who wins 50% of his games against teams having far more talent. Someone who will cut ties with players like Lewan and Gibbons before they destroy the integrity of the football program and the university.

Or they can opt for a Jimbo Fischer or Urban Meyer-like clone, who will win at all costs and establish the University of Michigan as a breeding ground for the next generation of criminal-athletes.

i agree, really what they need a program builder. somebody who has taken a program and lifted them up or has a track record of doing this, dare I say it, somebody like Brian Kelly

I think their only option is to break the bank for a big name, which is likely the only way to keep the fan base happy, too. i think they will can him asap and then expect the replacement to join straight away even if his previous team was headed to a playoff/major bowl game. When RR was hired they wanted Miles and he was happy to join after LSU's bowl game (BCS game?) and they told him they could not wait.

Of the lower level guys one name that was mentioned was Butch Jones. If they do get the AD from OU then I would venture to guess that Bob Stoops' name will be dragged about. They could also go after a pro coach.

Calling it now....Jim McElwain will be the next coach if CSU beats BC this weekend. That will give CSU more momentum and will allow them to win 8+ games this year. If they don't, it will be Doc Holliday.

That's a good point. There aren't any Utah Urban Meyers' or Cincy BK's out there waiting for their shot. Michigan will likely be stuck going after an also ran, or a coordinator looking at their first HC gig. That can go right but it goes wrong so many times (Charlie Weis, Will Muschamp) when their first gig is a big time university.

Also Michigan is likely to be competing against Florida for a HC this off season and I'd imagine that job will draw more interest than Michigan.
