Mac?
Mac?
Is there a reason why no one talks about Paul Chryst for us? Didnt exactly kill it at Pitt, but has Wisconsin in a very good place these days, despite the challenges of working there for Barry Alvarez, comfortable in the Midwest, etc. Pair him with a good DC, and why not?

This ^. He already has a decent DC in my boy Justin Wilcox.

Isn't that the guy with the creepy lip-licking video?
I would not like that hire. He hasn't proven he can recruit and win with his own players.
I couldn't have said this any better. Kelly needs to goEven though it's a high risk pick, I'd be happy with Fleck. This program needs a kick in the pants and his players seem like they would run through a brick wall for him (much like Dabo). We haven't had that since Holtz. Recruiting would not be a problem and I trust he would be able to land competent coordinators through his ties with Tressel, Schiano, etc. Of course, high risk comes with boom or bust potential, but where have our previous "safe" picks landed us?
Until a few weeks ago I was still in Kelly's corner, but the I have seen the light.
4-8 in Year 7 is unacceptable.
Regularly trashing your players to the media is unacceptable.
Shotgun formation on the 1 inch line is unacceptable.
Repeatedly passing in a literal hurricane is unacceptable.
Having depth issues in positional groups each and every year is unacceptable.
Turning a blind eye to special teams is unacceptable.
Not making in-game adjustments is unacceptable.
Getting outcoached on a weekly basis is unacceptable.
Honest question, not an excuse: Who has proven that they can recruit at ND?
Also, most up and coming coaches win with the other coaches players. It's not until year 3 or 4 that you have your own guys in key spots.
But I agree we need a great salesman.
Ah, crappy wifi on my phone made it look like a pictureYes. Hence why I posted the gif too.
My point was that he hasn't proven he can recruit at a high level at Pitt or Wisconsin. However, I think most coaches can come in to ND and recruit at a high level provided they have the motivation and drive to pound pavement on the trail.
The more important reason on why I wouldn't like Chryst is that he hasn't proven that he can win with his own players.
I think this is unrealistic but my favorite scenario outside of impossibilities like Saban, Urban, etc. would be to bring in PJ Fleck and hire Charlie Strong as DC. Pair a young energetic up and comer with an old hand who knows ND well. Could be a terrible pairing and dont think it would ever happen but on the surface I like it. Most important thing to me though is that BK is gone. I can not stand the idea of having him on the sidelines next season.

I could see Strong maybe taking a DC job for Kelly. Taking one for a much younger, less experienced, coach seems highly unlikely - and probably unhealthy.
Can someone please explain why any team would want Strong as the DC?
Last I knew, Tx had a ton of talent and surrendered points like the French surrendered ground in WWII. As a defensive minded HC, you would think Tx would have had defense first yet they did not.
Why the heck would you want that guy?
because the guy can recruit w/ the best of them and was a VERY SUCCESSFUL DC

I doubt Strong would be thrilled about taking direction from a less experienced coach. Could be wrong.
I like the idea of Fleck but I question his ability to assemble an elite staff and his ability to hit the road and recruit blue chips. The head coach is the most important piece and I think Fleck may have "it" but the staff he's able to surround himself with is important too.

Would you pick up the phone and call Mike Leach?
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
he reminds me wayyyyy too much of charlie and choc factory
Yup! No brainer and I'd honestly take him as our new HC too. I've always liked Coach Strong. Feel like he got a raw deal at TX.
Maybe he's our golden ticket.
Yet:
1) His defenses have sucked every year
2) He is in the best state in America for recruits where recruits grow up bleeding burnt orange so naturally, TX gets great recruit classes always
3) He doesnt win with these great recruit classes
4) Doesnt develop these great recruit classes -i.e. doesnt win
I get it the guy has great character. That is a big deal. But I have failed to see where Strong has proven to be even an average coach at a big time school.
