I get that it's customary, but its makes zero scientific sense. For instance, According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, abstinence laws say meat is considered something that comes only from animals that live on land, like chicken, cows, sheep or pigs. So under Catholicism, whales (mammals), porpoises (mammals) and seals (mammal) are all ok. Even Alligator (reptile) is acceptable. Those animals all breath air, have red meat and bare no difference fundamentally from land walking animals.
It's silly.
I thought that during Lent, abstinence from meat is still required, but as far as outside of Lent, other penance is allowed. The custom of allowing fish during days of mandatory abstinence is due to a loophole in canon law. The original discipline of the early Christians, still followed in most of the Eastern churches, also precludes fish, eggs, and dairy products. Canon law is written in Latin, and the Latin word for meat-- carnis-- includes only warm-blooded land-dwelling animals. Thus, some Catholics successfully argued that the letter of the law allows the consumption of fish during days of abstinence.
The point of fasting and abstinence is spiritual focus, self-discipline, imitation of Christ, and penance for sins. Since Vatican II, most Catholics are now allowed to substitute some other penitential act instead of abstaining from meat. It was a strict rule during simpler times, but now that many Catholics are capable of a deeper understanding of the Faith, it's become more flexible.
If it makes you feel any better - I have already failed at Lent and it's been two days.
But it should make you feel better, not me.So what do you have for your meal? Do you have tea during the other times? Protein shakes to get you through the day?I've given up eating....Well more than once a day that is. I'm doing a 23 hour fast everyday and I feel great

Don't feel bad about "cheating" on Sundays and especially before Lent began. Every Sunday is supposed to be a celebration of Easter and fasting is inappropriate on Easter.Nothing but water. The first couple days sucked (started Feb 1st), but since then I've been good. I cheated on SB Sunday, but other than that I've stayed on it. I eat a great dinner (Usually something semi healthy) around 6 and then shut it down for almost 24 hours. I'm down 6 lbs and my energy level is actually up.

I'm determined to do a Lenten beer fast someday. Nothing but doppelbock and water.
Drink tea. I don't know about you, but whenever I drink frizzante on an empty stomach I feel bloated and overall terrible. You guys are having more fun than me that's for sure..lol My big move is probably going to be to San Pelligrino sparkling water to try and feel more full.
This would be amazing. I'm sure your wife would appreciate it immensely.I'm determined to do a Lenten beer fast someday. Nothing but doppelbock and water.
I'm giving up checking the DRob thread for an real updates.
I gave up social media the previous three years.
I forgot to do so this year, so I am giving up fast food. One of the usual and boring choices, but I already quit smoking and gave up non-diet soft drinks.
I thought about giving up Netflix, but my wife veto'd that one.
