And third party support. That launch trailer showed one third party game and it came out five years ago. That's not a good sign.

This was my big concern as well. Nintendo has to realize they can't do the "play old games that already exist on consoles you own" thing anymore. It killed the Wii U. Nobody cares that you have Arkham City... It's old!

I also think Microsoft has the inside lane when it comes to new and innovative form factors. Windows 10 is becoming more and more of a unified platform across devices. All Microsoft would have to do is stick a controller on a tablet and launch a comparable product tomorrow with the entire library of Xbox games. Not to mention Play Anywhere titles that allow Xbox / PC crossover.

It showed NBA2K as well, but I agree... 3rd party support will be key. FWIW:

That list is fine. Though given the recent RDR2 announcement the omission of Rockstar is glaring. The question is if it is going to be the actual mainstays or junkware. Like is EA actually going to publish full versions of the new Battlefield/Mafia/Maddens on this thing? Or is it going to be lite versions or Nintendo Switch party games by EA?

Another notable thing. Correct me if I'm wrong but at no point did anyone ever use the tablet as a touch screen. It may not have touch. I don't think that would particularly upset me, but it would be an interesting sign of where Nintendo is taking this thing.

Completely valid points.

That being said... the 3DS and DS have been huge successes. If Nintendo can get their handheld consumers to move to the Switch and they focus all of their internal development on one device, then I can see the console being a success with limited 3rd party support.

I agree. With Microsoft and Sony both launching consoles that are a half-step more powerful than the current generation, I think it's a mistake for Nintendo to introduce a product that's a half-step less powerful than the current generation.

This was my big concern as well. Nintendo has to realize they can't do the "play old games that already exist on consoles you own" thing anymore. It killed the Wii U. Nobody cares that you have Arkham City... It's old!

But keep in mind...Nintendo's market isn't really "gamers"(in the traditional sense). It's families, which is why it kills it.

I mean, Wii sucked. The graphics were terrible, and nearly all the games were too childish. But I sure as hell had one in my living room.

I actually hope it doesn't. When something has a touch screen, users demand that every title uses it in some "innovative" way that usually turns out to be cheesy and/or unnecessary. It would also drive a further wedge between development for Nintendo titles and development for Xbox / Sony titles.

When my daughter was born two years ago, I played through Knights of the Old Republic on my Note during the sleepless nights of the first few months. The developers did a great job but playing "full" titles an a touch screen suuuuuucks. I did most of my navigating with the S-pen.

But I think a lot of that lighting-in-a-bottle effect was just due to the novelty of motion gaming. By the time it became ubiquitous with the Kinect and the Move, motion gaming was dead. There was a plastic drum set in everybody's living room six years ago too, but I wouldn't recommend investing in a Rock Band sequel. I don't think this setup is different enough from the Vita to distinguish itself as something similarly novel, especially with VR knocking on the door.

I wouldn't say it sucked... it just fit a totally different mold than Sony or Microsoft. We still enjoy our Wii for exactly what you mentioned, family gaming.

That seems like a really cool deal, as long as the game library is standard regardless of console/tablet setups.

Like, If I'm playing NCAA 19 in "console mode" at home with the full-size controller, and then have to catch a flight and take "tablet mode" with me, I've got two questions:

1. Can I play the same, full NCAA 19 game? Like, can I spend three hours maintaining my dynasty via tablet, the same way I would if I were at home on the couch with the cradle? Or does the lack of "console cradle" reduce the game to certain modes and functions?

2. Can I take the full-size controller with me and use it for tablet mode? Or does tablet mode REQUIRE the stupid, split, baby-sized controller?

The controller that they kept showing in tablet mode is what would concern me the most. It looked like he was trying to play an RPG with an Amazon Fire remote, and that es no bueno por mi.

I'm getting it just for the Mario Kart and Mario World's that are sure to be a part of it... seriously. Already sold.

Even scarier is when they gave half of the controller away to a friend for multiplayer. There's no way you're getting a full feature set if half of your controller is unnecessary. This is why Nintendo limits themselves to first party titles. You can use all of your nifty little features for Mario and Zelda games, but EA can't make Madden work like it's supposed to with the six different configurations of your stupid console.

I'm getting it just for the Mario Kart and Mario World's that are sure to be a part of it... seriously. Already sold.
You need friends to enjoy Nintendo. Thankfully, I don't.

Back in college, Mario Kart: DWI and Drunk Smash were rivaled only by Rock Band 2 in drunk video game revelry.

1. I assume the answer here is "Yes." If you can't play the full game then it's a uuuuuuuge mistake.

2. At 2:50 they show people using the full controller with the tablet.

Huh?

anyway, I would say you need kids to enjoy Nintendo... I don't think I ever played Wii with my college buddies, only my wife and oldest daughter and now we are getting to where my youngest is almost at gaming age... I'm super excited to do all of that over again with her.

I've always viewed Nintendo as party games that you play with a bunch of people in the room at the same time. Mario Kart, Mario Party, Wii Sports, Goldeneye, Super Monkey Ball, Wii Party, Animal Crossing. I'd never sit down and play any one of those by myself but they're a blast in a room full of friends and beer. That's not how I game anymore, so I'm not tempted to dive in to this new console.

Yeah, I meant it sucked to the guys who play COD, and other "Adult" games. That was my point. They went one direction and made a wise choice.

I couldn't believe my wife, at the time, went out and bought a Wii.

When the kids get a little older, I could totally see it being a fun system to own.

You da man, I missed the part at 2:50.

I'd be much more likely to get this if I can use the full controller everywhere, regardless of whether I look like a super nerd or not.

Portable charging options are going to be a big deal, I would think, in that regard. How do I charge my tablet and my controller while I'm out? Can I use one charger for both? Or do I need two chargers? How expensive are they? Or is it not possible to charge them unless they're on the cradle?

Can't wait for more info on this, as it seems like it could be awesome.

This.

Of course getting hammered and playing the Wii sports with friends was also good times.

My wife will play:

CoD zombies
Anything Mario
Anything with the girls

Getting this console will be a super easy sell to her because it's not just for me. I'm pretty hyped. All four of us playing Mario Kart together? All In.

Certainly true for Nintendo's home consoles.

On the other hand, the 3DS has been defined by immersive single player experiences (Zelda, Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, Pokemon). It's actually the best current system for RPGs.

So if Nintendo can successfully marry these two platforms, I think the Switch will have appeal to most types of gamers. The one obvious exception is the competitve COD, Madden type gamer.
