Almost all the time when a dog is alone and barks it's because of separation anxiety. They want company. It's not hard to train them to stop it, but it takes time and patience.
We're on a acre with a lot of trees. We have a lot of squirrels due to a couple of the trees are walnut trees. Our Redbone will tree them and start bawling, but if I open the door and tell her to hush, she'll stay at the tree but won't make a sound. Train them when you first get them and life is a lot easier.
