What Really Grinds Your Gears?

Here's one that came up last week, work related.

I can't stand the m-effers who show up at 9 or 9:15, and stay until 5:30 or 6:00, and make a comment regarding someone leaving early at 4:30, when the accused usually arrives at 7 or 7:15.

I am lucky to work in an office with "flex time," show up, get your hours and get your work done, and if you have something come up outside of the office that requires you to show up late/leave early, act accordingly. It provides great work-life balance in the work place.

The only issue arises when those who stay later (not LONGER) seem to have a "holier than thou" attitude than those of us who get in earlier, net MORE hours anyways, and take off a bit early to take care of our kids or to head to our softball or bowling leagues, what have you.

Co-workers really should just keep their mouths shut and let the managers or owners worry about the hours and work production.
If It grinds your gears... In my opinion with my foremost prior experience, it Is because you are questioning your own reasons why the "co-workers" are saying anything to question your ability to manage yourself.

I've had younger guy's come in 2 hours earlier and work to try to impress. I was confounded by their ability to say at the end of the day...Can I leave because of this that or the other?
I guess It really depends on the place you work, and If the work you do Is done only by you. If It's a teamwork type of job, and most are... ??? Earlier to work hardly ever means getting more work done. It Is usually the exact opposite In my personal experience.
What grinds my gears Is the self-entitlement all of the millennials think they have because mom and dad said you're always the winner.

Oh yeah...we have a few of those.

We have one individual who "replies all" at 10:45pm regularly. Seems like he's always logged in remotely when he's not in. Probably sleeps with his lap top open on his nightstand lol

And everyone knows he's just trying to impress his boss, who isn't impressed.

I have a staff of ten. We have an on-call phone they are required to carry once every ten weeks. The phone rarely rings, maybe once every 2-3 weeks and typically doesn't require them to do anything until the next day so it's not a real inconvenience. I just updated the schedule and one of the employees pointed out that a particular person should take his rotation because he carried it for her one week. Seems reasonable, right? He forgets that the week he carried it for her, she was on the road working day and night to make sure a project he's involved with finishes on time.

I'm house-hunting right now. Pet peeves:

1) House mullets. I don't get it. I click on a house and the first picture of the front looks nice, then the other sides of the house are coated in cheap plastic and have the architectural flair of a lego construct. It's a total bait-and-switch.

2) "This is an excellent custom home..." If I'm not the one who custom-builds it, then "custom" doesn't mean anything.

3) "Private lot"... If it's got 10 feet between the house and the neighbors, it's not that private.

4) "Excellent location next to a golf course!" Does anyone actually like this? Golf courses aren't that aesthetically-pleasing and limit backyard privacy. Most are dying and risk becoming abandoned. In the meantime, you get to deal with extremely frequently mowing noise. If anything, proximity to a golf course should represent a discount, not a price premium.

5) "Remodel the current home or build your own..." If I set my search for existing stock, please disallow these listings. People post them as move-in ready and usually the structures are falling apart.

To add to this:

Developers that slap a nice facade of expensive fixtures on shoddy new construction to justify ridiculous asking prices.

I see this several times a week inspecting homes, only with flips. The bones of some of these older homes are in bad shape. HVAC is 30 years old and the roof has 5 weeks left until it starts leaking. All old galvanized waste piping from the 50’s and electric panels still using fuses and cloth wiring. But put new appliances, a fresh paint job and granite countertops, and people pay ridiculous prices for them. Insane.

Y'all could just shorten that to "modern housing construction"

Can't disagree there. It can be hard to tell in pictures but so many places are like "pay high prices for cheap things we're trying to hide or disguise." I'm a believer in quality construction. Eventually, we'll build a new one, but for the timeframe of this move, we have to go with existing stock, which can be hard to judge.

My roommate man...dude just is lazy, I mean I get it, I'm kinda lazy too, but this is too much. We've been looking for a guy to take over our 3rd room, and my roommate keeps dropping the ball on this. Takes forever to get an ad up, makes no extra effort and everything. We had a guy who wanted to move in on the 20th, he was a little sketchy (told us that he'd broken a lease before etc), but we were going to go with him until this guy just ghosted us. He didn't respond to texts, gave us no heads up or anything, and now he texts us saying he wants to move in today. I say no, but my lazy-ass roommate wants to be done "looking" (as if he's putting any effort into this).

The roommate had a couple days to discuss with me in person, but continued to be out until late. Look, I get it because I'm busy too, but you can't just ignore the issue and run around with your friends if we've got important shit to discuss.

My girl was bugging me for months that I always leave her hanging when I go to concerts with the boys instead of inviting her along. These aren't like Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan or any other major concerts she really enjoys at the big venues... These are more niche groups like The High Kings (Irish folk), Collective Soul (to name a couple), or other rock bands that not many people know outside of one off hits, but me and my buddies will enjoy the hell out of the entire set.

I finally take her last night to one of these concerts with my buddy. On the drive home, she tells me she felt like the third wheel because we were discussing sports/politics at dinner, sang along to 90% of the songs during the show, and she didn't know any of them.

Case in *ucking point.

I'm in a good place here... my wife is basically one of the drinking buddies/fellas... she comes along a lot (so do a couple of the other wives honestly). She'll do chick stuff the guys roll their eyes at every now and then but she's not needy and if the conversation is about 'guy stuff' she just deals... it's rarely been an issue.

On the flip some of the other wags over the years have been nightmares in this department... and it's always the same guys that keep bringing new girls around that are just a rotating door in this regard. Even my wife and the other cool wags make comments about them. lol

You sound like a lucky guy my friend! My gf isn't all that bad in this department, she just gets jealous when "left out" and likes to constantly remind me of it. I'm not going to cater to her neediness though when I'm out at a concert with a close buddy; not trying to make him feel like the third wheel at a concert we had planned a while back.

I've taken her to several ND games and she actually really enjoys them. She was just stuck on the concert thing, so I finally brought her and kind of showed her what it's all about, and I think I'll be off the hook from her complaints at the next one lol.

I've been experiencing numbness in my left hand that turns into pain that runs from my shoulder to my hand. For a long time it was fairly mild and came and went. Started getting worse so I went to an ortho guy. He xrays my back, arm and hand. Says my problem is a couple of discs applying pressure on the nerves. Insurance wants me to do therapy first even though the doctor said it's not going to help. I go through three weeks of therapy and racked up about $2,000 in therapy bills (my insurance sucks).

Next step, doctor gives me an epidural in my back. I get a little relief but not much. Doc says sometimes it takes 2 or 3 injections to calm down the nerve. I get a second and it feels worse. I wait a month to make sure the injections have had a chance to do their thing and go back to the doc. No relief so I go back. I politely tell him I am now out of pocket $6,000 for these procedures and therapy and don't want to do anything else until he is sure what the problem is.

He decides I need an EMG to test the nerves in my arm. It's like a ping test. To my surprise, his assistant says my new insurance covers it and there is no cost to me. He runs the test and tells me I have carpal tunnel and refers me to one of his partners who specializes in it. I see his partner who tells me he has looked at my xrays and MRI results and doesn't believe I have carpal tunnel. I finally convince him that I don't think my back is the issue. He decides to give me a cortisone shot in my wrist. The doc says if I get some relief it probably is carpal tunnel. Well I get the shot and a couple of days later my numbness and pain is pretty much gone.

This will eventually wear off and I'll need the 15 minute surgery, but I'm still not happy he didn't look at the carpal tunnel first. I could have saved a lot of money.

I have flat out told a doctor in relation to chest pain issues before,... "I'm tired of 'diagnosis through prescription'... don't give me ANY pills until we diagnose exactly what is going on here. " His response in the very next breath, "Okay,... well let's try these pills, see if they work..."

Let's take a stroll down memory lane and the pain in the a$$ employee that used to work for me. For those that don't remember, he moved into a new marketing position doing graphics work. He works for my son in law who I strongly discouraged him from hiring.

Today's Episode............I take my son in law to lunch today and we're talking about all of the changes going on in the company. He's telling me how he's swamped and I ask why he doesn't give the "PITA" some of the work. He says he doesn't trust him to do the design aspect and does that piece before handing it off to him. He proceeds to tell me that they got into a shouting match about a design for a flyer that will be used for a university. The PITA makes a flyer with none of the colors of that particular university. When he tells him he needs to change the colors and use the schools colors, the PITA says the school will never notice that as they don't care about the colors.

Oh boy!

We've had a lot of rain this spring so getting the grass cut has been a challenge. I get the front cut and am about half way done with the back when I come upon a spot that is pretty wet. I try to turn and get stuck. My tires are just spinning and I leave two ruts about an inch deep. The ground is too soft to push it as I can't get any solid footing. I have to leave to go to the dentist and figure I'll grab my winch and get it unstuck when I get back.

I get back and find the lawn care guy came by while I was gone and left this.

Not yet, still too wet. They probably won't get to it for a couple of weeks as we're expecting to get rain 5 out of the next 7 days. When I called them, the lady I talked to looked at the notes the tech wrote and it said, "Today while applying your treatment some mud came up around my tires. This should wash away the next time it rains". I told her those were the exact words the guy used the last time he treated the lawn. Given it was the same guy, he should have known to walk the yard first. She says she'll send a manager out to look at it. I'm at work when he comes, but per my wife, his first words were, "Are you kidding me?"

They told me that application was at no charge. You think? The need to treat my lawn for free the rest of the year or I'm switching.

Was putting the finishing touches on a bathroom remodel this past weekend, just needed to paint.

My wife wants to help. I didn't feel like explaining why this was a bad idea, so I figured I'd just let her give it a go. After watching her paint uneven lines and even completely missing some sections (with a roller, for crying out loud), I facetiously began to go over the walls and spots she was painting.

Once she took notice she stormed out.

It's why anything involving power tools or a hammer are my favorite home projects, they're a non-starter for her.

God bless her, she was just trying to help. But get out of my damn way haha

Generic personality employment tests. I think too many employers put too much stock in these. They are not that hard to game, but I do my best to be honest and it seems to work against me. It's a weird early step to take; "if you can lie and bluff your way through this standardized test, you'll do well in this company!"

Yep......I took that test at my former employer. I had already interviewed a couple of times and knew the type of personality they were looking for so I answered accordingly. Passed with flying colors.

HR made me fill one of these out for an internal promotion...equal employment opportunity and all that BS. I've been here for 5 years...wasting my damn time.

Damn rain has kept that area too wet for them to make the repairs. If this weather keeps up it will probably be late June before it's dry enough and by that time, it won't be a good time to try and grow grass seed.

Update...............Two days ago, my son in law comes into my office and closes the door. Evidently the "PITA" isn't working out like he thought it would. He tells me he constantly complains, argues with him and has been forgetting things all the time. He tells me the PITA mentioned to him that he is a minister at the First Church of Cannabis. I guess you now know why he can't remember anything. He says he talked to his boss (owners son) about putting him on probation. I mentioned that probation probably isn't going to change him as it's his personality and nothing has changed since we moved him out of my department into his dream job. I also asked him which job was more important to him, his or the PITA? The blinders finally came off.

They're putting a round about at the intersection a mile down from my house. This is the main road I use to go most everywhere. They have the road blocked at the intersection by my house. No big deal, I can deal with it until they get done until they decide to tear out a small bridge on the next street over a little further down from the round about. you don't find this out until you're at a point where you are forced to make a U turn and go about another mile before finding a street that will get you to your destination. You'd think they would work on one project at a time given the streets are so close and heavily traveled.

What's worse, is the round about is at the intersection in front of the high school. With teens driving and cell phones in hand, I see a lot of accidents happening the first month or so.
