So according to this article, the "Shamrock Series" is what they are calling our offsite game every year. We will wear a different uniform on this game but will wear our traditional uniforms for every other game of the season. The jerseys for the Maryland game will be identical to the jerseys from the game last year at Yankee Stadium except we will have gloves with a solid gold palm that make a Shamrock when put together (instead of the leprechaun currently).

I'm glad Rockne's not alive to see this nonsense!

Is it just me or does all of this stuff smell of that 40 year old mom who wears abercrombie and "likes rap"?

"We're hip too guys! We got new jerseys and everything! You want to hang out later Oregon? What's that? You need to borrow my car? No that's cool!"

It's the "annual" barnstorming game. Who knew?

Last paragraph from the release:

Beyond the new helmets, the Irish jerseys and pants for the game against Maryland Saturday will be identical to those worn a year ago at Yankee Stadium against Army - including green adidas TECHFIT jerseys. New for the Maryland matchup, the Irish will wear adidas adizero gloves featuring a gold palm and adjoining shamrock logo plus white adidas cleats.

Adizero gloves featuring a gold palm. I was hoping for the Antiturnover gloves with the crazyglue palms.

I can't wait for the Boston College game Uniform du Jour Rollout on Project Runway.

We're a bit late to the party no doubt. Better late than never I suppose. If we never return to glory it will look foolish. If we win a BCS game in the next three years it will be worth. I am willing to take the risk.

Agreed, Rockne hated this kind of stuff. He almost had to jam a spoon in his own ear when he decided to start using the recently created forward pass...

Seriously? ND USED to be about innovation and creativity, until some bullshit generation decided we HAD to be about completely preserving traditions at the expense of growth of the program. That mindset hasn't worked, and its about damn time we get back to maybe being on the leading edge of creativity, again.

Outside of the forward pass, and actually educating football players, what other innovations is ND known for?

You know what grows the program? WINNING. If a kid is going to base his decision to come to ND on the fact that they wear cool uniforms, then I don't want him(not that what I want really matters).

I think you're going to find NBC is behind all this. They're targeting female tweens to up the TV ratings.

Look for Layered Jerseys, blue, gold, AND green, for the BC game.

Oh good lord....what has adidas done.

Ever since that night game, both Michigan and ND's uniforms have been changed....I don't like where this is going. My next fear is that Michigan is going to have a Maize jersey and ND will have gold ones.

Really? lets just whip out a couple - national scheduling, alternate jerseys (we created the genre in the first place with the green alternates at halftime), dedicated national radio and TV

We WERE a leader once, and can be again with some resolve.

My only thought with the helmet is...where are they going to go with the jersey?

Oh, gosh, almost forgot the big one! The marketing of the players individually - WELL before anyone else was doing that. The iconic "four horsemen" picture we all know, Rockne himself, all marketing the image of ND.

The point, we were great because we were first at all of these things. We got stale by defending some silly traditions. We have to shake off the staleness, and I for one am glad we're starting to be that ND again.

You're missing the point............the point isn't that we were great because we were first in all of these things. We were first in all of these things because we were great.........ON THE FIELD!!

Well NBCUniversal does own Bravo so perhaps they will have a Project Runway show featuring ND's uniforms.

I can see it now. "This weeks show challenge will be how to jazz up these old dirty unis." Then Nix and Tuitt will strut the catwalk to Right Said Fred's "I am Too Sexy.'

Negative - they go hand in hand. One without the other wouldn't have made a great program. Ask some other of the programs who also had some great teams but literally aren't relevant today.

ND matters BECAUSE we were leading edge. Once we slipped into defending that stuff and not changing ever again, we stagnated. We innovate AND win, and we'll get back to where we belong. Winning alone won't do it. Nor will defending traditions simply for the sake of defending traditions.

Positive - No one would have cared about the Four Horseman picture, if ND had LOST to Army. Besides, ND didn't create the Four Horsemen nicknmame, New York Herald Tribune writer Grantland Rice did.

I was hoping for complete uniform and body paint precisely matching the color of the field.....

But immediately started using the image to market. They arranged for the photo to be taken, its not like someone just walked up to them all on horses and took the picture.

You aren't going to get it because you are one of those folks who wants traditions at all cost. Good for you, bad for the program.

And all this time I thought it was about losing games. With new unis, a turf field, and a Jumbotron, Davie, Willingham, and Weis would be in the Hall of Fame.

If the Titantic had had multicolored deck chairs it still would have sunk because it plowed into an iceberg. It needed better leadership and a better crew.

ND's football demise was championed by Monk Malloy and Beauchamp running off Vinny Cerrato and then Lou Holtz. Similar to what had been done at ND by Father O'Donnell when Rockne died and what Father Hesburgh did with Leahy. It wasn't until Parshegian turned down Hesburgh for the ND job that Hesburgh saw the light.

Yes, ND championed the forward pass, the Rockne Shift, and a number of other innovations on the field. The design of gloves and helmets doesn't win games. Stop the nonsense. Coaches and players win games through proper execution, regardless of their garb or the environs.

You're wrong there. I have nothing against innovation. I just want it ON THE FIELD. All of the uniform stuff is fluff and pageantry. ND built it's reputation on hard working blue-collar kind of guys who couldn't have cared less about fluff and pageantry. All they cared about was getting an education and playing football to the best of (and many times beyond) their abilities. To my way of thinking, putting such a big emphasis on uniforms and such turns away those kind of guys, and brings in guys who aren't quite as committed to excellence. I might very well be wrong, but it's just my guy instinct.
