Started Dopesick on Hulu last night. My wife voted to give it a try because her entire career has been in pharma or pharma-adjacent. Didn't think I'd care for it. But a couple episodes in and I love it. I can't speak to its total accuracy, but it at least paints the overall picture fairly accurately of the opioid epidemic . Great cast and great story, as it is told from several different perspectives.

It also has a nostalgia feel to it, as the show takes place basically between 1996/7-2006 (if memory serves), but not in a good way. We kept pausing to talk about how accurate some it is, what we were doing in those years, and in bewilderment of the oxy usage and addiction.

On a side note, it gave me a new appreciation of Hillbilly Elegy and a lot of what JD Vance was getting at in his book.

14 Peaks on Neflix is the most incredible thing my eyes have ever seen on a tv.

It’s a travesty that that documentary hasn’t garnered more buzz. Incredible story of maybe one of the most impressive human achievements of all time.

Raise by Wolves Season II

I'm digging it, I only want Ridley Scott to get at least 3 more seasons + a growing budget to fully explore this universe he's developed. So many directions this can go.

Loved how S1 kicked off, love the concept of the Necromancer but I'm not digging her being neutered and wanting only to be the cyborg version of Mr. Belvedere. I will say the production quality of RbW and Lost in Space are both fantastic.

Totally understandable but I think it's a slow ploy with big payoff. I imagine she'll get her eyes back and she'll vanquish anything that endangers the children.

In essence, I'm in for the payoff. The infectious virus that can operate under the guise of religious epiphany to humans and take root in the AI is a cool twist. The suspected devolving force is linked to this viral thing that I can't quite connect the dots or see where it's going but I'm excited about it. And it enriches the universe and makes it feel as though new ideas could be spawned by Ridley.

I want to fast forward because if they give him a lot of seasons to develop this series, this shit could go bananas.

Started watching Reacher on Amazon last night. Pretty good. Love the character Reacher. Doesn't say much, but it's usually sarcastic wit. If you like Julia Garner (Ruth) in Ozarks, you'll like Willa Fitzgerald (Roscoe). She's a cop with the same attitude.

Euphoria, Season 1. It's giving me nightmares to the point I need to have an edible before bed to calm my nerves.

Finished Wheel of Time season one on Amazon last night...

If I would have just watched the show straight through prior to reading the first book, I would have been entertained, but ultimately still would have found it lacking when compared to GoT (which, fairly or not, is how all fantasy epics on screen will now be compared).

HOWEVER. Since I decided to finish the first two books prior to finishing the last three or four episodes of the show, allow me to say:

WHAT A MONUMENTAL PIECE OF SHIT THAT SHOW IS.

The books are pretty generic fantasy material, which includes a lot of "travel here... find a problem... travel there... find a new problem" etc. However, they both have pretty solid payoffs, even if there is a frustrating amount of unreasonable stubbornness from certain characters. It shouldn't have been hard to compress the first two books into a quality TV program.

But somehow, they made almost everything worse with the changes they made. The most maddening thing is that after 5 episodes, it's clear that they decided to mish-mash the first two books into one season of the show... but then reversed course almost immediately after some of the bigger plot points, and reverted back to doing just the first book after all. As a result, the finale seemed super rushed, the final "battle" was changed and was sooooooooooooo much worse than what was in the first book, and the standoff with the big bad was totally anti-climactic.

And they had the nerve to tease next season, almost to show "hey, we know we almost fucked up, but we really didn't after all! Please watch again if we get approved for S2!"

Watched Small Engine Repair last night. Classified as a comedy, but it was way more of a drama. Really slow and plodding until the last 20 minutes. Rated 6.7 out of 10. I would give it a 5.

I did finally watch 14 Peaks this past weekend. Thanks for the heads up. It was pretty amazing, borderline suicidal.

Dexter: New Blood

I thought it was a pretty good revival. A little slow when the teen drama was the focus of an episode thread, but the teen drama was also 100% necessary to get the plot to the place it needed to be in the end, so it worked out I guess.

Dexter being rusty was played really well, both in acting and for the plot. Deb taking Harry's job as Dexter's conscience was great.

The primary antagonist was played well, though he would have been so much more unsettling if he would have maintained his "barely-controlled rage boiling under the surface" thing for more of his scenes. Maybe it would have lost effect if so, but it felt like he needed juuuuuuust a bit more of *something* to be one of the great Dexter villains, but didn't quite get there.

I thought the ending was exactly what was needed after the first "finale" that everyone hated. It wasn't a "that was amazing!" or a "that was stupid as fuck"... they didn't go for a splash this time, just something that was logical and calculated. Something that left you thinking, but didn't leave you believing one extreme or another. It just is what it is. And that made total sense and should've been how it ended the first time around, imo.

Watched the last episode of 1883 last night. After criticizing the first two episodes, it delivered the rest of the way. Tim McGraw turned out to be a decent actor. As I mentioned in a previous post, I haven't been a big Sam Elliot fan, but he delivered in 1883. Was his best performance of his career IMO.

1883 is good stuff

we binged ted lasso this last week or so its excellent.
You and I have been watching the same stuff lately. I watched Ted Lasso too over the past few weeks and just finished 1883. Dang, they killed off some folks. I didn't realize until after the season ender that this was it... there's no season 2 of 1883. It'll just move on to the new show 1932.

I've been watching the 1987 BBC miniseries A Perfect Spy, based on the John le Carré novel of the same name. I read the book, but it was decades ago so the story was 99% fresh for me. It's quite good. Seven episodes and I'm on #6, so I'll finish up tomorrow.

So question is what's next :)

And thanks, I didn't realize it was more like sequential time pieces. That's interesting.

I knew that there was another show in the Yellowstone universe coming, and it would be called 1932. I assumed we'd then have three Yellowstone universe shows running concurrently. I didn't realize that 1883 was only a one season thing. I assumed it was going to follow the family's journey to Montana and then show how they started the ranch, the battles they faced in the early days, and etc. Apparently not. We now just jump to 1932 with the new show that's coming out later this year.

edit: If you don't know, there's also another show coming later this year called "6666" which is based on the actual ranch in Texas usually referred to as The Four Sixes. It's already been set up for a spinoff when Jimmy was sent packing from the Yellowstone Ranch to the 6666 ranch for part of this past season. It's now going to have its own show, which we "assume" Jimmy will star in, but who knows.

Sheridan actually owns (with a group) the Guthrie 6666 ranch. It's like 142,000 acres. They show will be filmed at the ranch.

The legendary Four Sixes Ranch, part of the late Anne Marion’s estate, has been sold, several sources confirmed Jan 22.

Sam Middleton, owner, broker and appraiser for Chas. S Middleton and Son Farm-Ranch Sales, and Neils Agather, Burnett Foundation executive, confirmed the sale occurred on Friday, Jan. 21, but said that was all they could say at this time.

Sources did confirm that the sale was made to a group led by screenwriter/producer Taylor Sheridan, who grew up in Texas and graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth. Sheridan is a co-creator and producer on the popular Paramount Network television series “Yellowstone” and a spin-off series, “1883”. Much of “1883” was filmed in Fort Worth. The success of “Yellowstone” has caused interest in a second, related series from Sheridan based on the 6666 Ranch.

Slowly getting caught up on Yellowstone... Just got to the episode that ended with Jimmy riding off with the 6666 crew. Monica makes me wish i knew my native heritage a bit better if the squaws look like her.. but man she's getting to annoy me. You'd rather live in a trailer on your own than a generational wealth compound with multiple people around who would protect you and your family as if you won't continue to be a target? Some of the character decisions and development (Jamie and Monica mainly) are just dumb.

I wish she would just be written off the show. She adds nothing of value to the show. She brings 2 things only: bitching and whining. She used to be hot, but she lost that because she's such a whiner. And the sidebar episodes when she's "featured" (the whole living on campus/professorship and sting operation) bring nothing. The worst part is, it's obvious the writers and producers obviously feel she's dead weight, as her role keeps worsening and diminishing, but yet they still try and cram her down our throats.

My wife works with some Native American women and they hate Monica, since she's actually half Chinese instead of Native. My wife mentioned loving the show at work one day and got an earful about the subject and how they didn't like the show because they used fake actors that weren't even really Native.

I agree about some of the character decisions and Monica being a hard to like character. She's there for her looks, period. They've never had a good story arc for her and the constant bad attitude thing has gotten old. There are only so many underwear scenes you can do before the lack of any other reasons for being there start to be an issue.

I thought her only purpose was to create drama/conflict for Kayce.
