Now I am onto some Lagavulin 12yo bottled in 2004. One of my favorite whiskies. Big time smoked fish, brined lemons, vanilla, tar, walnuts and apples.

I don't usually buy the Kirkland Signature beverages, but my friend (a whisky collector) said that the Kirkland Signature Blended - 27 Years is worth the $50 price-tag.

I tried the Kirkland, tonight. It's not bad, especially for $50 and being 27 years old (in theory.) There are two dominant smells, when nosing this blend: vanilla and plum candy. I tried a little, neat. Then I poured some water in to open it up.

This Scotch is mellow, but the finish lasts a surprisingly long time. It's only 80 proof, so the burn is low. The fun part is trying to figure out the sources of this blend.

Given the description of the blending sources, I would have to believe the Highland component is from Glenmorangie. The bourbon-wood just dominates, and this blend tastes like some Glenmorangies I've had in the past.

I think the Lowland component is from Cambus. Diageo owns Cambus, and also has a stake in Glenmorangie. I may be wrong, but that's my guess.

Final thoughts, it's a fun Scotch to have on hand, especially at the price-point. Seriously, $50 is a great price, nowadays. I think it would be a good Scotch to pour, blind, for friends. Let them try to guess what it is.

$80 - meh

Felt like something festive for the start of my weekend... got some Anderson Valley Winter Solstice, never had before and it's just what I wanted... lots going on but balanced well...

Picked up some Elysian Night Owl too and have that on deck, one of my fav pumpkin ales...

Their Boont Amber is pretty solid. I've been meaning to try some of their other offerings. Will pick that up if I can find it.

"Pumpkin pie spice" would be more accurate, because it's just clove and cinnamon, but we put that stuff in all baked goods this time of year. Better to call it "Autumn spice" or something like that.

Yes. I am sure there are harder professional exams out there but tgis one was tough enough foe me. Lol.

Sierra Nevada Holiday Haze IPA (unimpressed).
Modern Times Critical Band IPA (very good).
Sierra Nevada Coffee Stout

Now some Talisker 18 to celebrate ND's win. Talisker was the first distillery that I fell in love with (Lagavulin replaced them a few years later). I was 22 and bought a bottle of Talisker 10 (probably my fifths bottle of single malt after Glenlivet 12, Cragganmore 12, Highland Park 12 and Macallan 12) and I instantly fell in love with the massive pepper flavor to go with the wonderful wood smoke notes. The 18 is a much refined big brother. Nice sweet malt to go along with the wood smoke, light pepper and just a touch of maltiness.

Absolutely wonderful notes of vanilla, smoked fish, tar, some massive brineness, some tart lemon and just a hint of green wood. Not the best 12yo CS Lagavulin (2008 and 2004 are two that stand out to me).

How often does Lagavulin put out vintage bottlings? This seems to go against the current trends in the whisky world.
