Somehow ended up with a bottle of Johnny Walker Platinum. Haven't really been a scotch guy since my mid 20s. Thinking about giving it away to a buddy who would drink it, but probably not appreciate it....

Question 1, anyone had it before, and how is it?

Question 2, What should I do?
Give it away
Drink it
Keep it at the house until someone comes along that will appreciate it....

Okay, I'll take it I guess.

If I were in your situation, unless I know that to whomever I give the scotch will appreciate it, as in drink it because they enjoy scotch, not necessarily because they have a great palate, then I would keep the bottle for company.

Also, I'm on a 2014 Bonpas.

I have not had the Platinum.
I have had the Red, Black, Double Black, Green, Gold 18yo, Gold Reserve (after they removed the age label) and the Blue.

I say drink it. It is always good to expand the palate, and even if you don't drink it often, you can always offer a glass to visitors who might want scotch.

If you don't drink it and really want to give it away wait to give it to someone who will appreciate it.

That's what I was thinking. However what I feel will happen is... I'll have some pals back to the house after a night of drinking, someone (like me) will think "let's drink a fine bottle of scotch" after they've had 10+ beers... the bottle will be gone the next morning, and I'll be like WTF did that taste like...

Open it tonight and try it. Scotch, as long as you take care of the open bottle (keep it away from light and heat) will last for years, especially if the bottle is mostly full.

ETA: I have had bottles open for years with little degradation.

*Once a bottle gets low, you have a different story, then it is time to kill it.

Then do what I do, don't offer it after 10 beers. I'm the one who's taught my friends that we don't drink the good wine 2 bottles in (nearly got my supply cut, but I thankfully convinced my friend after 2 bottles not to text his old man that loves to give away his great wine). Just tell your buddies the truth: that it's a special occasion bottle. The special occasion can be at any time, but it's meant to be appreciated and not used to extend a buzz. Offer them some friggin' Red Label if they want scotch 10 beers in...

I've tried to convince myself of that, but have been unsuccessful a few time lol. I don't drink all that often anymore unless I'm tailgating, concert going, or on the few occasions I have pool parties. Hardly ever just chill at the house with a nice bottle these days. Maybe it's time to start.

So open it and drink some. Or mail it to me.

I wish it was closer to FB season. I'd keep it for the ND trip to Jacksonville and share with other IEers. Right now thinking I'm going to take the bottle and the 2 cohibas I have left from my trip to Belize, and have a good smoke and a couple nice glasses with my buddy tomorrow. Gonna go fill up the Rox ice ball tray...

There's a third, rarely considered option.

After I got married in 1982 I found myself the proud owner of three damn near full bottles of Crown Royal. I'd struck a deal with my local liquor store that I could return any unopened bottles of liquor. For some reason three were opened and one or two drinks poured from each. [Two open bars + a certain uncle (who shall remain unnamed) were a terrible mix.

Five years later I gave cooking with it a shot – pardon the pun. Within three years it was gone.

Sounds like a good idea. Except the ice ball part.

Enjoy.

Fuck off I called it!

Also, YJ, it sounds like you should have a taste. If it intrigues you, keep going, if not, keep it for company.

:starwars:

Also did you ever open the Glenlivet Nadurra? If so what did you think of it?

I have not. My buddy and I have made plans to share it, but he keeps pushing it back because of lame reasons. I really don't want to open it by myself, so I'm waiting a week and a half until he starts his new job.

I've actually had half a mind just to give it to my priest as a thank you, and I nearly brought it up with me when I went home for Easter, but I bought it specifically for me to share with friends. The waiting it just hard. :)

I like it chilled. Normally I poor a glass and put it in the freezer for 15 min. Tomorrow's setting may not be supportive of that...... I guess I could, but we'll be partaking out in his garage. When I say garage, it's a high door, hydraulic lift kind of "garage" in his back yard... More like a man room garage.... He does have a fridge out there I guess.

Good whoa? I love that beer.

Definitely a good whoa.

A bad whoa tonight for Goose Island BCBS, infected bottles. I'll be asking for a refund.

Trying to settle things down with Serpents Stout my wife brought home frome CA.

BTW, congrats to your wife!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think the ship has sailed on refunds for infected BC. End of February I believe.

Dude, that's got to be some bad press for GI. Just released some BCBS near the D a few weeks ago. Have to assume the same holds true for other markets.

Thanks for the info though.

Wait, are you talking about the regular stout? Black label? I thought the infection was in the Barleywine. But yeah, it had to hurt GI. They played it off like fans of sours might actually enjoy it. But again, I'm talking about the Barleywine, if the stout is infected too they've got huge problems.

Yep, the coffee stout. Did you get more near you? No way anyone could enjoy this beer. Smelled like a garbage disposal after sending a 3 day old salad through. And yes I did taste it actually tasted better than it smelled...tasted like a 2 day old salad mixed with sour cherries.

Acamp...I am up to date on all my shots!

I am very happy that they released Waldos' this year in 6 packs (previously I believe that it had been draft only) and for $11 a 6 pack it is quite the steal. Probably my favorite Lagunitas beer.

Sorry to hear about the GI, that sucks.

Just poured the Stone Encore Series 6th anniversary porter.
N: Roasted malt, dark fruit (berries and cherries), some slight toffee and caramel notes.
P: Roasted malt, vanilla, caramel, smokey notes. Smokey notes grow over time.
F: Smoke and roasted malt. Maybe a touch of caramel. The smokiness lingers.

Not bad but definitely didn't live up to my expectations.

Maybe it needs more time to mellow?

4 Dragoon IPA's at Spinato's Pizza. Not too shabby. There's hope for AZ beer after all. Pizza? Best in AZ BY FAR.

Dragoon IPA is the best AZ IPA (not that that says much) and probably the best Arizona beer that is canned/bottled. They also started canning it a few months ago (16oz cans).

ETA: Also Spinato's is great.
