Blended or on the rocks? Also what Tequila was used? Thanks for the help, I have never heard it called a Cadillac before (though I have had Margaritas with Grand Marnier).

Always on the rocks with me... Never liked blended. We used Jose C. Last night just because someone brought it for the Super Bowl and left it... I'm a big Mexican food guy and usually have a Cadillac with my Chile Relleno or Carne Asada...

Planning on going to a bring your own booze cocktail party tonight. Going to be one of those things where everyone brings the ingrediants and makes a round of their cocktail for everyone. Thinking about making whiskey sours and am looking for a good cheap bourbon. Anyone have good experience with Bulleit Bourbon?

Never enjoyed my limited experience with sours... How do you make yours??

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll let you know what I settle on. Reps coming.

I make mine with 1 and 1/2 oz. bourbon, 1 oz simple syrup, 3/4 oz.lemon juice, 1 egg white. Put into a Boston shaker without ice and briefly dry shake to foam. Then add ice, shake, and pour into a chilled glass with ice (ice sphere if you have the mold.) Garnish with a real cherry, not a neon one.

I like my sours with Rye whiskies but you can do a rye heavy bourbon such as Ridgemont Reserve 1792 as well.

That's actually why I was thinking about Bulleit, as most of the reviews I've read of it say that it has quite a bit of rye in the flavor.

Yes. Many upscale Mexican food joints out here offer Grand Marnier as a premium "upgrade" over the standard cordial in their margaritas. For instance, Triple Sec will be the default, Cointreau would be a $1 upgrade, and Grand Marnier would be an additional $1.50. Never seen a margarita with GM referred to as a Cadillac before either, though that is my preferred mixer.

Today is my youngest son's 2nd birthday, so we're throwing a party later today. Fortunately, such events are still a mostly adult affair at his age, so I got to stock up on beer: Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, New Belgium Abbey, Unibrue La Fin du Monde, and Ommegang Three Philosophers.

At TotalWine, I learned that my favorite bourbon, WL Weller 12y, has been moved to the same super rare allotment as Pappy van Winkle. I had just discovered it, too... very sad.

I'll be on the next flight.

Bulleit does have quite a bit of rye flavor. I think Bulleit is fine to use as a mixer, though it wouldn't be my preference for sipping.

Went into my liquor store and saw they had a fifth of Buffalo Trace for $20 so I got that. Can't beat that price for decent bourbon. Thanks again.

This reminds me of a story from my bartending days. I was working at a place where the house cosmo was made with Cointreau instead of triple sec (we could charge more for that, incidentally). So I made a cosmo for a waitress using this recipe. She comes back shortly after with the cosmo. The waitress tells me that the woman customer wants her cosmo made with Cointreau, not triple sec. I explained that we automatically make our cosmos with Cointreau. The waitress tells me that the customer insists that she can tell the difference and wants a new cosmo.

So, since I was young and cocky, I proceed to make another cosmo, but this time I use triple sec instead of Cointreau. I sent the waitress on her way with the inferior cocktail. Lo and behold, the waitress comes back a minute later and tells me that the customer loves the new cosmo. She was enjoying it so much more that it was made with Cointreau instead of cheap, inferior triple sec. I still get a kick out of that.

P.S. I, too, have just discovered how good Weller 12 is. And it is super allocated in my area as well. It's very difficult to get your hands on any.

What did you think of it?

I've only had a few Barleywines so I'm not very experienced with the tastes but I thought it was pretty good. Old Guardian is 11%abv too so it packs a punch. I seem to recall liking Avery's Barleywine a little more though. Both are really solid beers though.

Last night, I tried Brooklyn Brewery Soriachi Ace Saison which I thought was pretty good too.

George Dickel Barrel Select last night. Very good stuff. I tend not to believe those overly descriptive tasting notes people post, where the whiskey has a three part story. This stuff, however, did have a definite beginning, middle, and end. The first act had the whiskey start of with full mouth feel. Just when I was waiting for that alcohol bit to hit with the full body, the whiskey smoothed right out and just went to smooth caramel and dried fruit. Just when I had sent it down my gullet, about to take another sip, some pleasant whiskey burn suddenly popped up and the back of my mouth. It was such a great experience that I had to replicate the tasting a good 9-10 times yesterday.

How did you make it? Everclear? Vodka? What did you use as your mixer. Our jungle juice in college was Kool-Aid and Everclear.

Evolved from college... Orange juice, pineapple juice, guava, triple sec, tequilla, and Malibu rum... It does the job.

In college we used kool aid too, though ever clear was far too hard to get in Cali in the late 90s... Usually kook aid and the cheapest stuff we could get...

I think you just besmirched the name of Jungle Juice.

Haha, didn't know what else to call it... Over the years when I have only had random juice and random liquor i just threw it together and called it JJ. Honestly, isn't that the whole basis behind it?
