Are there any scotch aficionados on the board? I ave pretty much tried all the bourbons I can get my hands on and have attempted to expand my pallet. I have tried a few so far I liked.

I have Lahroiq 10 and McC 15 in my cabinet currently. I’ll take the former personally tho you have to like peat.

PKT gave me some great recommendations in the thread below. I went through 25ish different bottles over 2 years with a buddy. Ended up spending way too much lol. There were a bunch I really enjoyed, but the 3 that stood out to me was Mac Rare Cask, HP Freya, and Tal 25. The Mac Rare Cask was my fav IIRC. Easy drinking, yet layers and layers of flavors.

The peat is definitely an acquired taste, at least it was for me. I learned to enjoy it for what it was, but I'll take the Mac15 :). There was one peaty bottle I like more than the rest, but can't recall the name. I think it was one of the ones PKT suggested.

Welcome back to the board bud.

Have you ever tried Lagavulin 16? It's an essential if you like peat. People talk about how much it tastes like a campfire, and it does, but if you go deeper I think it tastes like the ocean. I feel like a sea captain drinking it.

The Lap10 is salty/seaweedy too. I know exactly what you are saying though (campfire+ocean). You should have said you feel like a sea captain on a burning boat.

Thanks guy. I will add that to my list. Probably go get one today. I am coming around on the peat flavor for sure. Smokiness in scotch is pleasant too I have found. I have had smoky whiskeys and bourbons and it just didn’t work. If you like the sea aspect give Talisker Storm a try if you haven’t.

I recently finished a bottle of the Lap10 for the first time. It was definitely peaty. By the time I finished it I had become used to it. It was definitely more peaty than the others I tried before. I guess that is why we date women before marrying them. Am I right?

If you want a medium Ballentines is a good bet. It has peat but much milder. Kind of a smooth mix of the two styles

I prefer my bourbons in the 100 proof region so these are all spicy and very long neat. Blanton, EH Taylor’s etc

Michters, Eagle Rare, woodford, Buffalo Trace...I found mild compared to those

If you want a modestly priced bang for your buck to drink neat:
Larceny (wheated) $25/bottle
Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage ($25/bottle)

Wheat bourbons are generally the sweetest to me. Makers, Woodford, etc.. 1792 Sweet Wheat is pretty sweet lol. If you just want easy and smooth pour yourself some Crown. It's technically not bourbon as it comes from Canada, but it uses bourbon mashbill...

Exactly right and exactly why I find them so meh. Makers is incredibly overpriced and overhyped for such a mellow meh taste profile.

I got Four Roses bourbon as a gift, it seems fairly smooth coming from a historically non-whiskey drinker. Also tried Bushmill's....not for me.

Nice to see you back, man. Have you heard of the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society? See if there's a local chapter in your area. The Hawaii one has bottle-shares, every month. Now that we're in social-distancing protocols, they ship out the samplers to the participants and do Zoom meetings.

I think it really depends on your tastes, and also what you're trying to accomplish, etc. When I'm purely trying to enjoy a couple fingers of Scotch or Bourbon, I do like things with a bit of depth. If I'm not focused on the drink, I can certainly enjoy a wheated or sweet whiskey if I'm into a game or something I'm focused on. The shallow profile, or lack of layers, doesn't necessarily mean it tastes bad or can't be enjoyed for what it is.

If I'm being honest though, I normally use things like Crown, Woodford, Makers, etc. in mixed drinks. I love a good Crown and 7 (or GA) with a large twist of lime. The same with Woodford as it's the only decent whiskey normally on Delta flights if I'm not in the mood for a Skybreeze.

FWIW my wife got me a gift from Flaviar which consists of quarterly tasting boxes. Each box is three pours of a selection of liquors. They group the three brands and you choose from any liquor... gin, tequila, scotch etc. when you get the box it comes with a stone coaster and tasting notes which I found helpful. https://flaviar.com

For me the best bang-for-buck bourbon is ECBP, or Stagg Jr. if you can find it at true retail.

What's ECBP stand for?

very close to what I've heard from others. Not bad, remotely, but not worth the price.

On my end: I've been meaning to pick up some aperitifs and whiskey; I'm even considering becoming a connoisseur of budget whiskey.

But this weekend Central Market had a half case of bubbly wine for $45, not the cheapest but bottles of bubbly rose for $7.50? Not so bad. Cracked one open tonight to make sure the one I take to a friend's back patio social distancing thing later this week isn't a bad choice. Not at all so bad imo
