I'll agree to this as far as TexMex and fastfood are concerns, although Americans in general have terrible taste for food. The beer statement is a bit much for me, though i'll agree that there are some really good stuff in CA. CA is a bit different from the rest of the US in my experience.

Did anyone catch this bullsh!t ad from Budweiser during the Superb Owl?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/siHU_9ec94c" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is the same AB-Inbev that owns Goose Island and Elysian, both of which brew a pumpkin ale and/or several varieties of fruit beer.

Depressingly cynical. A Belgian-Brazilian multinational beverage conglomerate wants you to know that real Americans drink their mass-produced adjunct lager, not the stuff brewed with passion by actual American-owned breweries. F*ck off, Budweiser.

In response, someone spoofed the ad in favor of craft beer:

Not sure this is accurate. LA/OC/SD has very authentic Mexican cuisine. From Michoacan style tacos to Jalisco birria de chivo to Oaxacan mole negro, you can get it all. Even Oaxacan chapulines can be found at many Oaxacan restaurants. Hell, there is a restaurant right across USC called Chicken Itza that has authentic Yucatan style food like cochanita pibil, sopa de lima, and poc chuc. In SD there is a taco place called Tacos El Gordo that is from Mexico that serves adobada spit style and other meats. The city of Santa Ana has some of the most authentic Mexican cuisine mainly due to its concentration of Hispanics. There is a place called Carnitas Urapan that sells carnitas surtido which basically means you can get a mix of any part of the pig.

It isn't any different than Phoenix, just more of it.

TexMex... whaaaaa-huh???

In regards to SoCal craft, I wasn't a believer either until I stayed here full time for 6 months. You'd have to show me a region and start naming breweries. I can't see anywhere else touching it. Yes, Europe included.

It's sad. Big Beer is already dead, they just haven't been notified. Average Joe's even buy craft now a days and it's growing everyday. I can't think of a market evolutionary shift that has happened this quickly outside of maybe fast food before my time.

I just hope Coor's can stay in business. Sitting at the pool all day is not possible on a 115 degree day in Scottsdale without a case of near frozen Coor's Light. It's about the only time a howler of real beer doesn't sound good.

All of the SoCal guys should get together on a Saturday or Sunday at a bar/craft brewery in the area. Would anyone be interested?

You might be jumping the gun just a little bit. Craft beer is growing fast but it is still a small portion of total beer sales (and yes domestics are definitely losing sales as well) Here is the 2013 numbers

Sales1.jpg

Now to the second part, my summer beers are Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale and SanTan Hop Shock IPA for places where I have to have cans (pools, the ocean, etc), but after doing yardwork in the summer in AZ I like Sierra Nevada Kellerweis.

Domestic Big Beer is getting hit with a market double whammy. Drinkers are turning to 1.) Craft Beer and/or 2.) Spirits (more bang for the buck, alcohol-wise). I think the only way that the bigs keep afloat is to acquire the small craft guys, which usually does not bode well for the small brewery's culture & quality.

Would love to have seen 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015's forecast.

The problem Big Beer has is when I buy one craft, it kills a six pack of domestic sales. A six of craft kills a case of domestic sales. A barrel of craft sold to a bar kills 2-3 barrels of domestic sales. When there are x amount of dollars to spend, craft soaks it up quick.

Adding to what Black Irish brought up: When I was in my 21-30 party stage, I drank Miller Lite by the metric ton. Everybody did. When you got well lubed, maybe you drank one or two rounds of shots with your friends. Kids I know in that demo now are hard liqour drinkers because of the bang for the buck. They may have a craft or two first but then it's right to the Goose, Jack & Johnny Walker. There are a lot of clubs in Old Town that don't even have domestics on tap. The pedestrian stuff is Heineken, Stella and Guinness. Throw in the local swill like San Tan and Four Peaks.

Lastly, You saying you like Hop Shock... shocked me. I'd have bet we landed Biggie Marshall before I'd figured I'd read that from you. From what I've seen you have a knowledgeable palate, MUCH more so than mine but I am no fan of the AZ scene at all. Being here in SoCal has only reinforced that thinking. I'll be back full time for spring training and will be bummed not to see Ballast Point and Stone on the endcaps in AM/PM.

Now, if I had to go to a higher shelf for summer beer it would be Mirror Pond but Coors Light keeps me hydrated without the slightest possibility of getting drunk enough that I forget to turn over or get into the shade from time to time. I can drink a 30 pack of that in a day and remain outwardly sober. Best of all, it has no nasty aftertaste that is intensified by the heat. In fact, it has no flavor at all! It's sorta like Adult Pedialyte for the pool.

Of course. As the old saw goes, American adjunct lager is like sex in a canoe.

Hey now. I said I like Hop Shock for hot summer days by the pool because it is in a can and many places don't let you bring bottles (though now that Sculpin is in a can, my pool drinking has changed some) and truth be told it isn't a bad beer, just very simple with a strong grapefruit/pine flavor that is lacking in complexity. If I had to choose my favorite local beer it would be Dragoon IPA but they don't bottle or can it. Dragoon Brewing Company

There is no doubt that Arizona is very far behind when it comes to craft breweries, though at least the available selection of craft brews has improved. Most of the gas stations down here do carry Stone IPA (though never Ballast Point ).

As to Coors light. I just can't do it. If I go domestic, I prefer Miller High Life.

This is kind of interesting because it shows the percent of change from 2012 to 2013 for the largest domestic brands.

Relieved to see my beloved Natty holding strong in the middle of the pack. So long as this country has enough broke college guys (and girls), Natty will remain a player.

My perfect girl in college was a beautiful, fit brunette who drank Natty.

Stone Enjoy By 2/14/15. I love this beer but I really shouldn't have had a cinnamon roll first.

Hopslam. Way better as a first beer rather than after a half dozen mediocre Porters and Stouts.

What were you drinking during college?!

I was just giving you a hard time but I will answer the question.

If I was at a large party I would drink whatever was there (I had one friend obsessed with Natty Ice, ugh) and if it was byob then I usually went with Killian's unless we were doing case races then it was usually whatever was cheapest (though I tried to avoid Natty Ice or Busch beers).

If I was going out to a bar I would order:
Guinness
Jameson or Wild turkey 80
Wild Turkey 101
Glenlivet 12 or Glenfiddich 12 (or at a local German restaurant/bar that we went to for birthdays, I would order Cragganmore 12).

Green Flash Le Freak

There was some talk of Trippel above. Let me give you guys a challenge: If you haven't tried this, please do. It's half Trippel, half American Imperial IPA. Very very good. Moved into my top 5.
