After thinking about what games we dominated in growing up, it occurred to me there were a number of games that really were a pain in the butt. Here are a few, anybody play any of these?

NES - Fester's Quest
festersquest_(13).gif

NES - Silver Surfter - I dare someone to beat 1 level. Get used to seeing this image:
SilverSurfer_TS--article_image.jpg

NES - Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants
Simpsons,The_Bart_vs_the_Space_Mutants_NES_ScreenShot1.jpg

NES - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles...seriously tough to get through more than 1 or 2 levels of this game, and it was made for kids?!
Tmnt-2.png

NES - Karate Kid - Another game targeted mostly towards kids. Did anyone try playing this? The mini games were kind of fun, but some of the side scrolling stages kicked your butt

NES - Ninja Gaiden - Probably one of the coolest and most recognizable NES games from back in the day, but getting to the final boss and beating him was damn near impossible. If you died on the final boss you got sent back 3 stages, and when you meet him you don't get to refill your health..oh, and he has 3 different forms. I don't know anyone that has beaten this game without cheats.

SNES - Drakkhen - Early RPG for SNES I think. Really slow and tedious, and a pain in the *** to play imo.

SNES - Mega Man X3 - I just remember lots of spikes, lots of pits, lots of death
Mega_Man_X_3_SNES_ScreenShot3.jpg

SNES - No Escape - This was a game based off a movie...and I have never played a game that was so horrible...(Well, Silver Surfer on NES would be a close 2nd). In the first few seconds you start the game you're being hunted by some tribals or something, they are basically on top of you instantly. You have to run across the screen, then eventually kill some guy with a spear while you try to punch and kick him. After that you spend hours trying to comb through a jungle to collect random items that you use to fashion together weapons and things, but theres no hints on what goes with what, it's all trial and error it seems. I've never even found a guide for this game online, it's so bad. Some guy "gifted" me the game...more like cursed. I dare someone to download a ROM of this and try to beat it, I would be incredibly impressed.

I don't remember too many tough 64 games...

PS1 - Carnage Heart - This was an early Playstation 1 Mech fighting game. It was pretty sophisticated with people that could research new parts, manufacture parts, setup mech armies, production facilities, code the software/movements for the mechs in battle...it was really involved. It was pretty neat for awhile, but it seemed to really get tough the further you went.

PS1 - Vagrant Story - For some reason theres a big following for this game, but I never really enjoyed it. The weapon/armor crafting was pretty cool, but outside of that I thought the controls were clunky, some of the boss fights were brutal, and while the story was kind of dark and foreboding...I didn't like it overall. I just couldn't finish it due to a combination of those reasons.

I'd imagine most people didn't beat Iron Mike Tyson on NES (or Mr. Dream, once the license to use Mike's likeness expired) from Punch-Out!! on NES.

Ghosts N' Goblins on NES was difficult because you were so fragile, you had to play perfect and they threw hordes of baddies at you. Same for the Super remake on SNES.

Battletoads on NES was from the same era and was extremely tough.

Castlevania on NES was an absolute mother****er.

Altered Beast on genesis was more of the same.

Notice all the side-scrollers?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES was strait hard.

There was a glitch in Drakkhen for the SNES where your guys would accidentally bump a coffin by themselves and a creature would come out.

To make a long story short, I let my SNES run for 2 days without playing, and all my players were maxed out when I started playing again. I killed the final boss in two hits. So anti-climactic, but hilarious.

I beat Mr. Dream as that was the version I had. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I ever beat Mike Tyson. They had the same moves of course...but Tyson is so much more intimidating, even with his lisp.

Definitely a tough game.

Yup, we established this on in the other thread

Altered Beast on genesis was more of the same.
Never played it

The hardest game ever IMO:

Battletoads for the NES

Silver Surfer on NES is much tougher. Imagine dying anytime you touch ANYTHING. Projectiles, enemies, even walls. You get 3 lives, and you have to make it through an entire staged UNTOUCHED. You can't win, you can't even finish 1 stage, it's impossible. More AVGN:

Another one that comes to mind is Out of This World for the SNES.

It isn't that bad that if you know what to do, but every move is so painstaking, you literally have to spend hours doing trial and error to get through pretty much any level.

I beat Punch Out... The worst bosses were in Castlevania to me... Just near impossible in 1 and 3... Even relatively easy ( but awesome) Symphony of the Night had Galamoth, who was so damn impossible they had to include a built in cheat to prevent people from committing suicide over the game...

Symphony of the Night was an awesome game. I spent a pretty penny to get an original copy before they released a Greatest Hits version. I remember beating the game for the first time...only to find out that the game was only half over

When I saw the title of your thread my first thought was Silver Surfer. I played a number of games with my son (when he and I were both much younger, and joysticks weren't in the mix) that were an entertaining "bonding" experience.

We managed to beat most games but Silver Surfer kicked our ***. I'd play at times when he wasn't around. Once I destroyed three controllers we traded in the game – at my insistence.

I "retired" after beating him in some game that involved a joystick and more than three buttons to push. He was impressed. I admitted that I'd essentially beaten him by randomly pushing buttons and moving the joystick.

Sigh ... I miss the days when I could play (5 ball) pinball for a dime when 5000 points won a free game.

His Castlevania 3 review was awesome...

I don't think I ever played a game THAT MUCH without ever betting it...

When I think about, Castlevania 3 is the hardest game I have played...

"Blades of Steel" on the original NES. The hard part was when you got into fights (i.e. the only reason anyone played the game). The computer opponent's punches caused twice as much damage to you as yours did to it. I remember furiously stabbing the button as fast as I could, trying to land as many punches as possible so I could win. It got to the point that I didn't enjoy the fights anymore (maybe that was the point). When I got knocked out, I would scream "THIS IS BULLSH*T" and toss the controller across the room. And when I won, I just furiously jammed both of my middle fingers at the screen while screaming "YEAH, SUCK IT!" Like it was personal. I don't think my parents realized what a potty-mouthed, bad-tempered kid I was until we got our first video game system. Atari 2600. Serious gaming OG here, ya'll.

Well, this thread certainly took a long trip on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

I was a pre-computer "nerd" in that I liked to read, learn and write. I may not have been the best at the learning and writing parts, but I tried. I was also "cool" because I had an interest in Pinball (the precursor/progenitor to video games) became pretty good at it.

I was also (and still am) a wise-arse and had no compunction about commenting on or poking fun at/with anyone, regardless of any damn thing. Military service was (and is) never sacrosanct. That I am a short American of Irish lineage in need of corrective lenses is not a shield from light-hearted slings and arrows.

Nor should it be.

When my son (now 26) was 4 or 5 he spent a weekend with a cousin. When I picked him up he excitedly dragged me to the basement where he'd been playing some basic Nintendo game. That he'd shown the ability to learn from mistakes and to recognize patterns and then anticipate convinced me that it wasn't a complete waste of time. I bought him a system and many, many games for years to come.

He and his girlfriend are now collecting "vintage" systems and games. More power to them ...

Ha, forgot all about that show, we used to watch it growing up. Didn't know they made an SNES game out of it.

Speaking of cartoons, anyone play Rescue Rangers or Ducktales on NES? I'm not sure I ever beat either game.

I rented it at blockbuster and thought it was fun and novel. I didn't re-rent. Honestly, I just wanted to jump into the vault of coins and go gold swimming.
