Iu bball just had a kid do same. Redshirt (non medical) grad in 3 years eligible to play immediately.

Austin Etherington did get a medical redshirt his 2nd year. He graduated in 3 years so he has 2 years to play as a grad transfer instead of the normal 1season. I played against his Dad when he played for Butler.

He's not wrong, because Miami got off absurdly light. And Auburn dodged rain drops on the Came Newton stuff. And insert all kinds of other examples.

But what USC is wrong about is why they got hit how they did.

1. Their AD basically said "come at me, bro" to the NCAA.
2. They had ONE TOTAL PERSON IN THEIR COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT.
3. Their athletic department had MULTIPLE violations in MULTIPLE sports... that were overseen by this singular compliance person. They weren't even trying. That is the definition of "failure to monitor" and "lack of institutional control."
4. Hiring Lane Kiffin... a guy that EVERYONE KNOWS IS CHEATING, DIRTY SCUM... is 100% relevant to how hard you're trying to clean up your program. USC never took things seriously, and they always thumbed their noses at the NCAA thinking that the NCAA would balk.
5. The entire system depends on self-reporting and monitoring by member institutions. When you don't do that or lie it's much bigger than the actual crimes. The NCAA thought (rightfully) that everyone associated with USC athletics was lying.
6. There was irrefutable proof that they were using ineligible players, and the fact that they made no attempt to uncover that they were ineligible matters.

Yeah, it's ridiculous some programs like Miami have roughly skated by while USC was punished, but they certainly deserved it. I'd even argue that Penn State, even if the Sandusky charges were an overstep of the NCAA's reach, got off lightly given the fact that all of their charges were either reduced or removed after a few years.

Regarding the Bryce Dixon situation

"Here’s what we know about the Dixon situation at this point:

* Despite reports that he had been dismissed from the team, Dixon remains on the roster, according to a school spokesman.

* This is the second time Dixon has been disciplined because of a student-conduct issue. He also missed the Cal game last season. It’s not known whether the two are related.

* A source close to the situation told me not to draw any conclusions just yet, that it’s a fluid situation and that Dixon has to go through a process.

Assuming Dixon isn’t back – again, we don’t know yet – it’s much more likely that Sarkisian will move one of his big-time linebacker recruits to tight end. Osa Masina and Porter Gustin are the candidates for that.

Sark also has transfer Taylor McNamara, a walkon - Connor Spears, and, in the fall, freshman Tyler Petite. Not ideal, especially for spring practice. The one scholarship player this spring is Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, who was academically ineligible last year.

And Fitzpatrick has been 2nd and even 3rd string most of the spring. They have not been very happy with his work ethic and apparently there were some serious questions early in the spring about his academics once again, and that is why the walk-on was starting over him. Last practice he finally got some (again, SOME) first-team run, so maybe there's hope for him.

As for Dixon, right now, people I know do not think he'll be back. He had character issues coming into USC (I remember when he "committed" to UCLA and then immediately was telling everyone he would still probably commit to USC in the end), so this shouldn't be a surprise to USC fans. But of course, a lot can happen between now and fall...

Spring Practice - Effect of Scholarship Sanctions

Spring Practice - Effect of Scholarship Sanctions

Restricted to no more than seventy-five total scholarships for the last three years, there's been little margin for error in recruiting. With less depth, less freshmen redshirted and, when total scholarship numbers dipped below seventy-five, USC gave walkons scholarships.

Last year for a couple away games USC suited up forty-eight scholarship players and fifty-three for a home game. USC does not have the luxury of exceptions to recruiting limits that SEC teams do. In the SEC, class size can exceed twenty-five if the total scholarships would fall below eighty-five. USC is limited to twenty-five a year, which they signed last year (one blueshirt from previous year counted towards 2015).

Where does that leave them? After losing two players in-season in 2014, they had sixty-seven scholarship players. Twelve were lost to graduation and four were early entrants to the NFL draft. Spring practice has them with fifty-one scholarship players from last year with an additional six early enrollees. With nine players with injuries that have kept them out of spring practice and one suspended, USC is finishing spring practice with forty-seven scholarship players, which includes two walkons given scholarships.

When the entire 2015 class enrolls in the fall, USC will have seventy-five scholarship players before handing out any further walkon scholarships. This year, USC has sixteen Seniors without any eligibility left. Assuming only three players lost through attrition next year and assuming another twenty-five in the Class of 2016, next year USC will be up to eighty-one scholarship players. Only after the Class of 2017 will USC be again at eighty-five scholarship players.

He goes to the local Catholic high school in the area...Don't typically play great competition as I believe they are division IX, but I'll have to catch a game or two this year as his sister is a geometry student of mine. Must have performed well at camps and such due to his level of competition not being top notch here in Southern California

Per @AdamSchefter, #Eagles have been trying to trade Matt Barkley but have found no takers. In this QB crisis, er market, that's amazing

Remember when Matt Barkely was a top 10 pick and then went back to college? I am happy he got his degree but he lost out on millions

Watching that 2012 USC team completely implode was one of the most entertaining things ever. So much wasted talent.

he would have flamed out in a similar way if the had of come out as a junior. sure he might have made more money but the fall from grace would have been steeper

With last year's recruiting class of 25, including a blueshirt from 2014, USC's roster numbers are slowly climbing back.

In 2014, sixty-nine players were on scholarship, including three walkons who were given scholarships. Sixteen Seniors graduated and four underclassmen declared early for NFL draft.

USC now has seventy-five scholarship players, counting Bryce Dixon who has been suspended. With sixteen players who will use up their eligibility in 2015, USC is looking to take another full class of twenty-five. Two blueshirts from 2014 would join a 2016 class of twenty-three.

Without any attrition (which won't happen), USC would have eighty-six scholarship players for 2016. So, they will probably have a few more scholarships to award walkons in 2016 before they can get to a full eighty-five after the 2017 recruiting class.

Too bad they don't go by SEC recruiting rules, which allow for recruiting classes greater than twenty-five to get to eighty-five.

kid had a altercation with a daughter of a very prominent booster family and this is why he was dismissed. no criminal charges or anything, pretty bizarre story
