Finally, there at the end we went 3 deep with Joe S. as deep middle safety (before Schumate hurt himself even). Why wouldn't we go Max, Schu, Farley at that point if BVG wants 3 deep S?

I'm sure it has to do with reading the offensive formation. If they line up in a certain look, then Schmidt stays in the short to medium range passing lane. If they give him a different look, then he turns and gets deep at the snap.

I agree with your thoughts, but with USC running a 2-minute passing offense, I would have preferred to see Farley in there covering the passing lanes. Much quicker reaction to the ball the Joe. IMO

Assuming that you mean at ND?

Michael Floyd
Maurice Stovall
Jeff Samardzija

all come to mind. I realize that they did not light it up like Fuller is doing. But I think we can all agree that Fuller is not a complete receiver; he catches the ball with his body too much, and I think that is going to hurt his draft grade if he doesn't improve it. But those three that I mentioned all were complete receivers: They had great hands, enough speed to break a big one, and they blocked really well. I'm not sure I have seen as productive a receiver as Will Fuller, but I think I have seen guys that were just as good.

Tim Brown and GoldenTate were also pretty good.

One of the smartest things to happen last night was before the game. Picking this game to honor Tim Brown and Jerome Bettis in front of all those recruits is huge. If these kids didn't blatantly notice, their subconscious had to be thinking "ND doesn't just put guys in the league, they put them in the Hall."
Well done Jack and crew.

Yes. I tried to keep it to guys that I thought were complete receivers. I don't recall Brown or Tate ever doing much blocking. That doesn't mean that they couldn't, it just means that I don't remember them doing a lot of it.

There's nothing wrong with the defensive calls and scheme.
They're playing aggressive and aggressive defenses eventually give up big plays.
There were always players in position to make the stop.
If the MLB could tackle an immobile quarterback and not get run thru every other snap, the defense would be impressing everyone.

I'll take BVG's style over Diaco's "death by a million paper cuts."
Watching teams march up and down the field all day with 15 yard cushions gave me chest pains.

The blocked punt was the craziest and loudest I have ever heard the stadium. It was absolute pandemonium.

Sheldon Day even if he didn't finish a ton of plays last night was so damn disruptive on the line every single play. Too bad our QB contain couldn't reward that disruptiveness.

I really haven't seen a wide receiver better than Fuller.

Kizer= mobile Tommy Rees. Difference is this offense is loaded at every single damn position.

No way man, just no. At 2:18 Tommy Rees makes this throw only in his dreams, maybe not even then.

And I haven't seen Kizer throw many momentum crippling interceptions. There is no comparison here IMO.

That spin move by Prosise in traffic on his short touchdown run was downright nasty.

My postgame thoughts:

1) How about that first play of the game for ND! Deep ball to Fuller for a 75 yd. touchdown. I don't think anyone from USC D, to the fans in the stadium, or anyone watching at home expected that call. Great call.

2) Kudos to Autry Denson and adding him to this coaching staff. Our running backs this year have more of a want it attitude and you can see it on the field.

3) CJ Prosise does a great job of finding holes the O-line makes for him, he is becoming more and more dangerous in the open field.

4) Kmoose I agree with your assessment of Kizer on page 1. He has done a great job this year, but I felt like he missed some open guys over the middle more than usual yesterday, and he tried doing too much. Very coachable kid though.

5) Even though he had 1 catch, it went for a TD, great confidence booster for Corey Robinson.

6) I wanted to see 2 people make big plays and they did: Amir Carlisle and Max Redfield. USC's loss and our gain in the long run.

7) Nyles Morgan needs to see some more PT on the defense.

8) Cody Kessler had too much time to pass the ball yesterday.

9) In ND's week off I think they need to revisit tackling 101.

10) Winning on the field=winning in recruiting I expect ND to pick up some recruits.

Great win, go Irish!!

My game ball goes to the whole Irish team for a great team win!

You do know that Tim Brown won the Heisman and was elected to both the NFL and College Hall of Fame?

1. If Schmidt is a team player he should volunteer playing time to Grace and anyone else. Guarantee we would have got to Kessler more often. Schmidt is smaller, weaker, shorter arms which won't make up for his plethora of missed tackles. Enough with the walk on Rudy business. It was like giving the ball to Cam over Tarean. Enough of this favorites business. Other players who miss tackles see the bench. Schmidt is the all American kid just not an all American.

2. Day, Cage, Romeo and Smith played great. Too many whiffs after that. Nice play by KVR in the clutch. They made about 5 huge plays other than that D held them in check.

3. Give our other two backs some carries.

4. Amir done on returns and about time.

5. Tacklers need to use arms and wrap up except for Schmidt who has alligator arms.
6. Yoon looking solid.

7. Wonder if some of these USC players wish they had come to ND. USC games are 70% attended in a dump. ND stadium is the zenith of game day. More girls in SoCal and easy junior high classes at most. Feel bad for the kids who generally don't graduate and don't go pro.

8. Felt bad for Haden. He is a class act and was an ND homer as our announcer.

9. Despite the 2 ints which were great defensive plays we beat USC at their best. Kessler escaped our pressure over and over like Houdini and his frickn passes were always on the money. We are a better team and other than Q1 and Q4 we stunk.
10. Would like to seenWimbush inserted for running and a twist plus a few wildcat runs. This offense runs the same Sht over and over. While it works ok the red zone choices or even when we get inside the 35 is infuriating. If Kizer wants to hold the ball then roll out and stop killing drives with your sacks.

11. Tackling on final USC drive was awesome. Everyone was focused and wrapping up. Don't think Scmidt was near anything. Watching the game again and Schmidt got straight armed by a wr and looked ridiculous. Stop playing favorites and bench him. He can send in signals. Tell me who we've played so far that would start Joe Schmidt? Just saw Joe make a good easy tackle.

12. Flutie just sucks and why does NBC have these inexperienced guys at halftime for commentary.....really?

Actually liked the quick kicks. This team should be undefeated at this point . What is happening with Texas, OK, and even Virginia yesterday bodes well for us. We need better safety and MLB play and Kizer needs to continue growing and we win out.

Not to be "that guy", but did anyone else cringe every time Kizer took off running? 14 carries is too many when our only backup is a true freshman. I shook my fist at Kelly on about 12 of his carries, even if they were effective.

Yes. I understand that there are times when he needs to run situationally and when it's needed for the game plan, but when you are up by ten, I'd just be a smarter runner, meaning, get what you can and go down. We really truly cannot afford an injury in this respect. All that's left is a true freshman and then the Nerd Play Signaller Guys, whose intellects and value to the team I respect but who must never be allowed to take a meaningful snap.

Post game - Post hangover thoughts:

1. We did a great job in the first quarter controlling the momentum. DK to WF on our first play deflated their whole team. they were expecting a run, and the whole defense bit on that play action pass.

b. ESB blocking the punt - perfect special team call.

#. CJP is a freakin stud of an athlete. Very few players can kick it into high gear in traffic like he can.

4. I don't like to talk bad about our players mistakes, but JS needs to step down as starting middle line backer. BVG needs to put in someone else to blitz - Joe is too slow and can't tackle.

F. USC knew the only way they were going to beat our team was with trick plays. That says a lot about how much more talent we have than in years past.

* Our defense gets stops when they need to get stops. We had critical 3 and outs.

10886. I cheered so loud when Max and KR picked Kessler, and it was great to see Cory make a great TD catch.

:( Not sure which announcer is more annoying...their both @sshats.

ND won. USC and Michigan lost. I got laid last night. Best Saturday in years!

So what? I never said that Brown wasn't a great receiver. I only said that I don't remember him doing a lot of blocking.

I don't feel bad for them. Making short-sighted, poor choices for short term gain usually leads to long term pain.

1. CJ and Fuller...awesome!
2. The fumble going into the endzone was deflating...but they didn't let it get to them.
3. It's been a long time since I've seen a blocked punt at ND...place went nuts!
4. I know that KVR can fly, but it seems like each time a big run gets broken off, that none of our DBs come close to closing on the guy.
5. Joe S. is struggling.
6. Could not believe that Kessler got away a few times when it looked like we had him cornered.
7. So pumped that Cory held on to that TD...great adjustment to the ball.
8. Hope SC wins out now...which is hard for me to do.
9. Can't stop watching the end of the Mich game!

With 3 catches. Should have been going to him all game, and he should have had 10+ catches.

The two pass interference calls were also huge, and a result of Fuller's skill. That and he averaged more than 40 YPC and made a huge impact on two scoring drives. He pulls special defensive attention that helps others get open, too.
